The Lebanese-Nigerian Community in Kano, has accused the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) of racial discrimination against its members, following its refusal to issue them the e-passport document in Kano, where they are resident.

Alleging that the immigration authorities in Kano were not being sincere in referring them to Abuja for the document, the community wondered why they were treated as citizens during the census exercise, only to be seen as illegal aliens now.

Mr. Hafiz Falila, who spoke for the community, hinted that they would take to the streets to demonstrate against the racial discriminative tendencies of the NIS in Kano, saying that, "if Barack Obama could win the US Presidency, then all nations with racist problems should hands down, even though I know Nigeria does not have that problem".

The Lebanese community reminded NIS that their great grand fathers were born in Nigeria and by the virtue of the United Nation charter/convention they can even contest for elective political offices.

Mr. Falila, called on President Umar Musa Yar’Adua, to intervene in the imbroglio, saying that the action was shameful on the Nigerian state and that it should not be allowed to go unpunished.

He said they have a population that contributes large chunk of the population of the state and that even during the census head counts, they were treated as citizenry, ‘why is it that now we will be reduced to settlers living in the country illegally’.

He worried that they can not travel out side the country on any trip, because their passports have expired while those not expired could not be renewed from the authorities concerned.

However, responding the comptroller of immigration in Kano, Mr. David Parradang, said their action was based on the position of the law and purely within the confines of the Nigerian Constitution which stipulates that only Abuja has the right to give new passport to foreign nationals.

Parradang said that in Abuja, every foreign national, has tag which can be easily accessed and either clear a person or deny him the new e-passport, and it is basically for the security of the country.

They are definately not all 419's. I dnt know if u live abroad but imagine been classed like that in a general term abroad . These people are definately Nigerian citizens and they should be treated as one. Descrimination of any kind should be stopped. They are mainly 3rd and 4th generation nigerians so i cant see the problem here.

If we Nigerians could be accommodated abroad so why cant we accommodate these people.

I need to understand what the law says as regards naturalization of foreigners but I suspect its pretty stringent.

Nigeria constitution as whole is a joke. Nigerian to Nigerian are racist toward each other, a country where you are born in one state, that person can not compete politically he/she will have to go back to where his/her father comes from.

the law is clear. They are not ORGINAL Nigerians.

Nigeria is their second country, they should obey or be thrown out!

the point is u are nigerian once ur parents were born in Nigeria automatically or your parents have Nigerian passport, So who is disobeying the constitution here the Nigerian immigration or the lebanese people. I am not a fan of the labanese businessmen in nigeria due to their exploitation but the fact remains these people are Nigerians as well and we cannot do anything regarding that. They were bron in Nigeria their fathers were as most of them emmigrated to Nigeria in the 50's and many during thier civil war of the 70's/ early 80's.

I think the point here is the Kano office could issue them with the passport so why are they been directed to Abuja and other are not been directed there. In Nigeria no one needs to go to Abuja to get a pasort and can get it in their region.

How can a person with an expired Nigerian passport be called a foreign national Now i live in the UK, and dual national , the UK govt will never address someone with a British passport as a foreign national but as a british citizen.

and for those immgratin to naija, the account should be check to make sure they have enough to live in naija

Most times, birthright citizenship benefits the host country and helps economic growth.

It only becomes a problem during global meltdowns.

It could also help a lot of immgrants who feel they're "not Nigerian" despite having lived in Nigeria for decades, to feel less inclined to violence, imo.


I could be wrong though since many African problems have constantly defied solution.

the UK dont give citizenship by birth too.  i dont see the wahala with naija here.  these guys can go to abuja. that is simple.

check every immigration services abroad if you are not originally ethnic, your files are handled by a specialised section not only in nigeria.  what if they had this section in warri or burutu?  they wont go.

o boy it is not that bad na. na only visa to naija wahala dey make some people get passport for thier family. being married to nigerian get you a naija passport quicker.

We are forgetin gmost of this people had their parents born in Nigeria. We used to live in Apapa and i know the lebanese comunity there had been there since the 60's .

I beg to diasgree with this as in the UK it is different once you have been granted citizenship. These lebanese are already Nigerians they are not applying to be Nigerians but they are applying to renew the passports (document), that is the issue here and not weather they should be granted citizenship or not as they are already citizens. Why descriminate against someone with a Nigerian passport?
