Hello fellow Nairalanders,

I need your advice on this issue. I am about to take a very important and life altering decision in my life, but I am kind of confused as to what to do. I am very sure, that we have mature people here, and I would definitely be given best of advice. This issue cuts across my entire life, please matured advice are kindly welcomed.

I am a guy in my early 20s (would be clocking 21 by December). I have a Diploma in Engineering, and I currently work with a company in Southwest Nigeria. I graduated as the best student of my Department, and that was in early 2012. I did my internship in one of the big names in Nigeria.

Ever since 2012 that I finished the first phase of my polytechnic education, I was unable to satisfactorily secure admission into the schools and course of my choice. Nonetheless I vowed never to settle for HND. Although My Dad pushed against my own will to apply for HND and I was admitted but I refused and turned the offer down. For the University admission application, it’s either I was given the course I have no interest in or not admitted at all. I applied through direct entry, UTME and several many others. One of the many trials even journeyed me to meet the Vice Chancellor of a State University in a supposed southwestern state. The Vice Chancellor questioned me, accusing me of probably cheating in CBT because I scored the highest (story for another day).

I kept on trying but, this year I made a resolution to have a taste/peep into another field. Although I have passion for engineering, but I fell in love with Medicine after I saw two American Television series (Grey’s Anatomy and Night Shift, please don’t think of me weird). I humbled myself and did another UTME exam. I did excellently well, and my performance in Post UTME was good, though below my set standard. I was pressed to change from Medicine and Surgery to Nursing when the admission officer told me of my slim chance of being admitted for MBBS (Indigeneship stuffs). Fortunately I was admitted for Nursing.

In my quest not to put my eggs in one basket I obtained another DE form. Using the DE application I picked two schools in southwestern states. But, I didn’t stop there; I applied as an unsolicited candidate to another school in one of the Northern States. Fortunately I was admitted for my long desired course in Engineering Field in the Northern University. Though I am still awaiting the two Southwestern Universities and the Northern University resumes in 3 months; I don’t want to give these all away. I want to make the best decision base on good career advice.

I have so prayed and it seems God is giving me a blank cheque to write on. At this point, I can't afford to make the wrong decision.

The issues I have now are:

1. The school that admitted me for Nursing has opened portal for Acceptance fee payment which closes in a week. Of which the tradition is if I couldn’t pay on or before the said deadline; my admission would be invalid. Of course this calls for professional and tactical deliberation and decision. Of which I am to accept the admission now (school resumes presumably January), I would be forced to quit my full time job, thus I won't be able to safe enough for my expenses of even 2 years in college.

2. I am so in love with the Northern University, I love the environ, the distance and of course the solitary of my personality I would enjoy (considering my personality), but we all know the security issue in the north though it’s not rampant in this particular state.

3. The living expenses in Nursing admitted school is on the high side. Looking at it my entire savings would be out in less than two years. Speaking of which my Dad is of no financial support since I disobeyed and turned him down. So I have myself to think about Feeding, Tution Fee, Hostel Fee, Hand outs, Internet data and Transportation. However, my savings would see me through four years of the Northern University.

4. BNsc is a 5-year course and ELectrical Engineering (DE) is a 4-year course, considering the age factor.

5. I am torn between my fantasy and passion, but I want to make the right and best decision. It’s a pity I would be forced to make decision this early despite the unpreparedness of the rest two schools to release DE admission lists.

I am sorry for the long write up. Please advice me from experience; career-wise and future-wise.

Thank you very much.

My brother I think the right thing is bare but you still might need some reminders.
Firstly, your internal drive must be considered. Nothing can replace it.
Secondly, your financial constraints. I graduated last 2years from unijos. It will b a setup to say I didn't spent much. I had to sell one of my textbooks (MEDICOSURGICAL NURSING) worth of #10,000 in my last semester. So please seek your father's support anyway possible.
Thirdly, nursing in Nigeria is not close to the one you watch in Gray's Anatomy etc...so many intra and inter professional gray areas.
If U Have The PASSION u will never regret it. Good luck.

Late than never
Both courses are good but you have to let your passion rule.
Passion is very important. Nursing isn't practise the way you saw it done in nigeria, so meaning that you will have to put a long term planning on going to such places to make it real.
2. your love for engineering shows in the right up. my friend I want you to know that is enough to get you going. pls if you ar not considering travelling out you will be disappointed if you find out it doesn't work the way you saw in the movie. You will never regret taking engineering but you may regret picking up nursing due to a directed movie.
God is the best of planners, I wish you the best.

...nice write-up @OP...I'd like to state having carefully perused your 'article' that to me, you are passionate abt Engineering, nonetheless you are beginning to have a crush on Medical-related courses which of course it's OK (we all do at some point in our lives). It's important however to clearly separate one's passion from fantasies. In my humble opinion I think you should go for Engineering. This is not disputing the fact that Nursing pays more in terms of benefits (salary scale et al), but when one is dogged about one's profession there's no limit to what you can achieve with it. Hope this helps.

Plus I am now in uni doing my first degree, which I will finish next year with a good 2:1.
My brother oops, as it stands now if you do engineering people will respect you while in school, if you do nursing people may laugh at you while in school, but when you graduate and start looking for job, in Nigeria of today nursing is better. Good luck.

Thank God, you went for engineering at last. If I knew about this thread then I would have told you to stick to engineering. Both engineering and nursing are lucrative in abroad, but to enjoy engineering, you need relevant practical skill in your engineering field to excel because brilliant people are too many in engineering compare to nursing. If you are loaded (with relevant skill), you will surely be needed in any organization. 'Skill' is very important in engineering to excel. If you have time, try to Google '1000 richest men in the world' and look at their profiles one by one to see their professions. Most of them are from engineering profession especially: 'electrical engineering', 'computer engineering' and ' computer science' , you can't find any salary earners among them no matter how much organization are paying. It is easy to create wealth with engineering(with right skill), that is why they top billionaire professional list worldwide, but with 'medicine' or 'nursing' , your first priority is to 'safe life' and not about creating wealth, although, you can be 'comfortable' with your earning. At secondary school level, brilliant minds in Science class are either for 'medicine' or 'engineering', but poor system of education in Nigeria does not help engineering development except you focus more attention on yourself by getting relevant practical skills needed to excel, it favours medicine and nursing more because of how they are structured to face real-life practical with patients on daily basis. By the virtue of being trained as engineers, you are job creators through creativity and innovations, but as lucrative as engineering is many graduates in engineering remain jobless and unemployable because they rely on theory they taught them from schools; many never worked on themselves, they rely on schools to give them relevant skills needed to excel. Once you lack relevant skills after graduation, you will not be confident enough to even standalone and practice what you studied once there is no job. There is no dull moment in Computer Engineering and Electronic, you are not restricted, it cut across every field in the world, so you can work anywhere as many organizations do have IT department. Engineering is the most exciting field championing latest technologies and inventions from autonoumous human robotics, IoT, AI, smart skin, ambient technology, smart mobility, 3D-internet, digital twins, smart city and so on (from computer/electronic ). My advice for you, don't specialize at this stage, try to be versatile first, from your post graduate level, you can be talking about specialization. Programming should be a basic skill you must get, no matter the area of computing you want to specialize. Don't rely on classroom programming they will teach you in school like programming to solve quadratic equation, matrices, average of two numbers, factorial and so forth, no organization will ask you to come and solve quadratic equation for them. Don't hate programming, you must love it by force; you need programming in 'electronic' for embedded system like programming ICs and Microcontrollers and in 'computer'- try to learn programming for mobile applicacation development(for android, IoS, Window mobile) and desktop programming. Website designing(programming approach). Even if there is no job, with skills here you can develop apps and sell or make FREE apps for Google and IoS ( and get your money indirectly from Google and Apple indirectly). I have lots to say but time will not permit me here, I am tire of typing, you can 'PM' me for more advice if interested. Good luck!
