plaetton:how is Nnamdi Kanu doing every Nigeria a favour? A man that is seeking to buy arms and weapons to create an uprising in a region or state is a capital offense in any country in the world. He is not speaking any truth and All he speak is hatred for Hausa, yoruba and other non Igbo tribes in Nigeria. I don't agree with you that there is anything wrong with our federal system because our system of government is almost identical to that of US, France and some advanced countries. Even when we were operating a regional government in the 60s it caused a lot of problems which lead to the civil war. Nigeria problem has always been a leadership problem because the average Nigeria don't hold their leaders accountable. 2 Likes |

thisisayus: Your write up is half baked and in some instances, outright falsehood. An example is the change of currency which was done on 1st Jan 1973..after the war. The Aburi Accord which you refer to has the following resolution "Members agree that the legislative and executive authority of the Federal Military Government should remain in the Supreme Military Council, to which any decision affecting the whole country shall be referred for determination provided that where it is possible for a meeting to be held the matter requiring determination must be referred to military governors for their comment and concurrence. Specifically, the council agreed that appointments to senior ranks in the police, diplomatic, and consular services as well as appointment to superscale posts in the federal civil service and the equivalent posts in the statutory corporation must be approved by the Supreme Military Council. The regional members felt that all the decrees passed since January 15, 1966, and which detracted from previous powers and positions of regional governments, should be repealed if mutual confidence is to be restored. [4]" REASON FOR BREAKDOWN In response to the accord, the federal government promulgated Decree No. 8, which was mainly an embodiment of the accord. The accord finally broke down because of differences of interpretation on both sides. This led to the outbreak of Nigerian Civil War. plaetton: Well, the North had come to fancy the unitary system introduced by Gen. Ironsi. Meant to pacify the North and strengthen " national unity", but was obviously in vain as he was killed. The central govt would have lost to much power to the states/regions. The North are still in opposition to true federalism till now. Primarily because of oil money. People don't give up power easily. It was also an opportunity to follow Sardauna, Ahmadu Bello's philosophy "to never let the Southerners be in charge of their own destiny, and to consider Nigeria as a property of our great grandfather Uthman dan Fodio". True federalism is diametrically opposed to such. The North are majorly conservative in politics. Hence it's very funny for GMB to be head of a so-called progressive amalgam of parties. 2 Likes |

The war was avoidable. Ojukwu shouldn't have allowed his ambition to overrule his sense. Declaring a unilateral republic without the consent of ethnic nationalities was a shame. 1 Like 1 Share |
