One convocated from my school last year and the orphanage home were really proud of her. They made souvenir for her that she distributed on that day. Her pix childhood pix was also there.

If it is a standard orphanage home, they will keep watching your back until you can be independent.

Great topic you have here, I was just discussing this with a cousin who celebrated Christmas with an orphanage. Government should make adoption easy after vigorous background checks and then unannounced monthly follow-up to the homes where the children live and schools they attend.

Have been asking people what will be the fate of this children when they grew up and discover they had no relatives. Especially when they are of age to be their own independent and get married. These same thought of yours came to me one certain time ago, am yet to get a tangible answer.

I am one. Lost both when I was 5. Graduated last year atop of my class n as d only first class in my dept from UI. Still held posts at d departmental and faculty level and engaged in extracurricular activities with normal social life. Almost done with nysc now. Being one teaches you to be resilient, circumspect and unwaveringly focused.
Needless to say, I'm 21. God be with all others across the world.

OP, God must remember you this 2016 with favour, as you have remembered these people. This a call for us to go close to orphans & find out more, their plight are unimaginable! Best post ever in nairaland. Better than posts like pictures of davido etc

Let me respond to you based on what I have seen.

There's an orphanage home located not far from my house (the kids there normal come to fetch water at my place at the peak of dry season). The home was initially established by a Nigerian couple (the couple now reside outside Nigeria) but the orphanage is now running nearly self-sufficient. Before those couple relocated, they were able to train some of then kids to adulthood. Most of which are now married and doing very well. These are the people now financing this orphanage home.
They all meet to celebrate Xmas together yearly with present kids in the orphanage home. It is just amazing, I have been invited before, I thought all the people are just good samaritans, not knowing they grew up in that home and still see themselves as part of big family.

@Poster Back to your question, it is not what they brag about, growing up in orphanage is not an excuse for not doing good in life.

statistics Shows Dat kids the have dysfunctional childhood/teen hood have more tendency to be a productive adult, they would strive, nature always finds a way.....
Most kids from good home and upbringing ends up wasted!
So dis kids(orphans) works so hard so their seed doesn't go 2ru d same hardship... Dat why our parents gives us d best, so we will be beta off......
But finally I think Grace and destiny plays a big role in all of it.

Homes gives them education (formal or informal), when they get to adult stage, they are exposed to reality of life through training/workshops, they are then settled to fend for themselves and have families. of course they see others in the home as their kinsmen- foster mothers are recongnised as their mother

They've got to go once they age out.

But not to worry, most of them have tremendous support from new extended families.

Thank God for your life. you were able to achieve these because you face the reality of life early enough, you didn't give much room for self pity or you were determined and God by your side.
Please encourage others in your home to emulate these your attributes so that they don't end up becoming children of circumstance

Odenigbo,good question.

The last time I asked, the Reverend sister, said some of them have relatives though extended, whom they go to when they are older.

Some of them have their father but their mum may be late,so the man gives them to be cared for to claim them when they are older.

Others help them in the orphanage when they grow.
Others leave to fend for themselves.
I hope this was helpful.

The orphanage run by the Catholic organisation I know has refused the adoption process.
They are rude about it.
They don't even allow you to get as far as the security post with such intentions.

Lol.. .That is the real problem in Nigeria. When you surround yourself in poverty for so long, you'll start to think it is the same for everyone. I understand. God will assist you. Anyway, I already have three boys which is why we are thinking of adopting a girl. Plus, if it does happen, she will not be growing up in Nigeria. God forbid.

Hahahahahahahahaha... dis ur ansa na killer ansa. "God wil assist u" ..lol.

let's face it squarely rich kids have a greater chance of survival than less fortunate. lesser motivated yes but lesser chances? NO.

it's just Darwinism.

OP, strictly my opinion. Since they grew up with the other kids, they see them as their extended family. No worry about papa and mama.......
To them making decision, the SOS only guild them and allows them to integrate into the society by watching their back.

I am quoting u coz of ur signature, not coz of ur comment, in just a few words u just spelt out my life there.
