Squabbles over legal representation for Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on Monday, stalled his trial for alleged treason at the federal high court, Abuja. Vincent Obetta, Kanu’s lawyer, who has represented him since the beginning of his trial at a lower court, was not in court, but another lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, who claimed that he had been hired to represent the IPOB leader, showed up.

A mild drama ensued as Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel asked Ejiofor to leave, impressing it on him that Obetta was the legitimate counsel of his brother. Ejiofor tarried a while, but left afterwards.

The case, however, did not come up, and Obetta told TheCable that the Kanu family was still trying to sort out issues regarding legal representation for Kanu, who has been in detention since October 14, 2015. On December 23, 2015, Kanu had refused to take his plea before Ahmed Mohammed, justice of the federal high court, Abuja, citing lack of confidence in the court.

This was after Adeniyi Ademola, another justice of the federal high court, Abuja, ordered the Department of State Services (DSS) to release him unconditionally, and after a chief magistrate court discharged and acquitted of charges of criminal intimidation and ownership of unlawful society. Meanwhile, Obetta has refuted reports that Kanu is ill, and that he is being tortured in custody. According to him, Kanu is in high spirits and healthy.

According to The Cable, Vincent Obetta who had represented the IPOB leader since the beginning of his travails, was absent at the Federal High Court, Abuja on Monday, January 18, where Kanu is being tried for charges bordering on treason against the state.
In his place, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, who claimed to have been hired as a legal counsel by Kanu, stood before the court.
However, Nnamdi Kanu’s brother was not comfortable with the change and asked Ejiofor to leave, stating that Vincent Obetta is the only recognized counsel to the IPOB leader.
Ejiofor stayed for sometime but subsequently left the court room. Kanu’s case however, failed to come up.
Obetta subsequently revealed to The Cable that Kanu’s family was still trying to straighten out the matter of legal representation.

Why Kanu's brother? Do they not have structure that decide on such critical matters? Which lawyer gets absent from that kind of case without proper arrangements and cooperation? Infact this is getting pitiful for this guy.

The issue will be resolved like every family matter and the enemies will be disappointed once again. I remember at the initial stage.DSS wanted to choose an abooki lawyer for Kanu but common sense prevailed. That common sense will prevail again DSS should allow Kanu speak with his lawyers.

Some people are already crying, singing this is not good for our democracy as if it was Buhari that ordered the lawyer out of court. this IPod guys really have some issues to settle with the gods of their land because the way they reason this days shows they have more spiritual problem than we think.

Instead of the IPOB youth to go sell their fathers' land to raise money to defend their dilector at the court, they are busy constituting nuisance in the name of protest. His brother is left in this mess alone. He can't continue paying the first lawyer and the lawyer took the exit door from the case. Very soon that one that call himself Kanu will be left alone to rut in kirikiri at the mercy of hardened criminals.
