We just heard your own side of the story.
Nobody knows how you have previously behaved in the lecturers class.
Nobody knows how rowdy your class has been during previous lecture sessions with this lecturer.
Nobody know whether or not the lecturer has warned your class to maintain decorum earlier.

It is difficult for a lecturer to mate out such punishment for such common-place misfeasance.

NB: it is part of formative process to own up and accept responsibility but most young men are usually quick to put the blame on the next person.
IMO, this is the most sensible comment I have read so far. Most of the comments here are one-sided, hence illogical. Many posters were quick to cast aspersions on the lecturer while ignoring other possibilities(from the lecturer's viewpoint).

Tell them
coolhamid:
Accidental lecturers...
Many of them are fortunate to be lecturing because of the decay in the Education sector...

In fact , many of them don't understand what lecturing entails...

I was in afternoon class yesterday when my biro stopped working, so i decided to go and collect the biro I gave to my friend before the lecture. I stood up and went to the where my friend was sitting meanwhile the lecturer was in at the back of the class receiving call. I thought to my self that I would collect the biro and explain the reason for my standing up to him but before I could do that; he called me and asked me the reason I stood up, I explained to him and he said I should get out of his class. Before I could reach the door he asked me to come back and give him my name and matric no; which I did, then he sent me outside and said I should never come for any of his other lectures or test. He conducted a test for us that same evening which true to his instructions I didn't come for. He would have said I shouldn't come for exams if not for the fact that the course is being taken by two lecturers so he only has 50% on grading us.

So does the punishment fits my crime?

And what steps can I take so that this man won't bully me.

am nt a girl.

Go to ur upper level students/course mate and ask how to follow him.
Try to meet him and apologize
Meet other lecturers and ask for their help in talking to him
Go to ur hod and tell him to help u talk to him
Go to your senate and ask for help.

Read my suggestions i didnt use report or complain about him oo. Just present it as if u were wrong all the while..let the ppl u ask for help judge for themselves.

Above all pray too. God will see u thru

If the story happened as you just narrated, I can't see where you are at fault.
Nonetheless, find a nice time after you might have prayed to see him one on one, explaining with love, that you aren't as rude as he thinks. E.g, he might also argue that you should have waited for him to finish with his call b4 going for your extra pen. "Sorry sir. Sorry sir" as many times as you can say.
Don't engage him in logic when you go to see him. Humans want to feel important; let him have his day; he is good while you are bad.

Ahahaha typical government controlled control

In this new age where people chat with lecturers via Skype, some mumu archaic and backward intellectuals would be forming HARD and STRICT.

Saddist lecturer. OP my humble opinion is for you to locate his closest boys who are fellow students and use them as proxy to appease him. Every lecturer has a right hand boy or girl in school. Locate them and you should have know the kind of person the lecturer is. Are you an otondo (JAMBITO)?

I really cannot believe what I am reading here and the mentality of Nigerians. FYI, I did my bachelors in Nigeria and studied further abroad. Are there any rules and regulations that says students cannot move during a lecture? Was such made available to students? He damn has the right to move to get writing materials or even leave the lecture if he so desires, and the m0ron of a lecturer has no right to ban him from the class. It is crazy to fault the young man.

Well my PhD is in Abroad. B.Sc, M.Sc U.I I am a Nigerian and will remain so. Students abroad do not disrespect their lecturers. Dont form abroad here. You disrespect one and see if you will graduate.

Yours is even better sefsad

In my own case, after the severe warning given to us"Not to write the names/test for those who wer'nt around" I still went ahead to do so thinking he would'nt find out. Mehn, luck ran out off my way when he began calling the names. When he got to my side,I stood up and then he called the next person (absentee): OMG! Na who send meshocked? Was all I could utter...

The rest they say is history shawink

That's Y I don't go for my Msc. in Naija Coz I had similar case during my undergraduate, and I have to rewrite d exam after all manner of apology the man use deaf ear. I now commit the lecturer to GOD in prayer and my GOD repaid him by sacking him out of the lecturing job. He is now roaming about try to look for uni that will give him job but none because he was involve in malpractice with one governors son.

But don't do that kind of prayer for the lecturer so that his family will not suffer for his sin.

I completely agree with you. Almost seems like sane minds are rare here.
. Each time I hear things like this, I get a kind of rage like raining hell on them. The good thing for these lecturers is I never got a chance to school in a Nigerian University, I probably would have raised a campaign against all these sadists called lecturers, and that's after a few of them are out of job.

I do not really know where the Nigerian lecturers got the kind of autocratic power that they have.

I mean if that was what really happened, I can't see anything there that warrant such punishment.. besides, was he supposed to be receiving calls at the hour he was meant to be teaching....

I guess the reason will be that there are so many kids in higher institution these day. and they now run it like secondary school...I will not be surprised if one would ask one of you to knell down and hands up...

If you have a HOD, It's better to make a complaint to him....I mean without the students, he would have been jobless.... Customer services are not only meant for the banking sector... Educational sectors are equally inclusive under the umbrella of customer service..... You should realize that u are paying for his services...

Even when I was in primary school, not teacher on earth could have done that to me. Op, stand up to your right. Report the matter to your HOD. If he doesn't take action, escalate to the Dean of your faculty. If nothing is forthcoming, take the matter to your institution's senate.
What arrant nonsense is that?

Hahaha . this is too funny...

you shouldn't have given him your reg number and your name... I urge you to act smart in such situation.. common, are you not a Nigerian?

I suggest you lay it to the desk of you HOD for help. if you're lucky you'll be favoured, and if you're not not it my be more curious, the lecture will always have your reg number in his memory while marking your exam script. and I guess you know what that means!!!

And where did you get your PhD and MSc from? What do you mean by students abroad not being disrespectful? I don't mean to show off, but I have an MSc and a PhD (from abroad), and I currently tutor students (abroad). And you classify movement during class as being disrespectful? Jeez, you amaze me. Students EAT during classes here (there is no rule which forbids it, except during practical sessions).
FYI my students go in and out during class as they please (probably to ease themselves) and it doesn't bother me. That you are their tutor/lecturer doesn't make you a lord over them. Some of them are probably smarter than you are.

You suppose to apologize for your action. When he sent you out maybe you arrogantly carry your things and acted as if the lecture is not important. In Nigeria we value elders and any repeatable youths will always be favoured. You have to go back to his office and beg him.

I will do same if you put up i don care attitude. It takes a lot out of the lecturer to teach.
there is one thing the man is known for which is that he hardly forgive. anoda guy coughed in his class and now he is in my shoes. I did my best to apologize but what is the use of apology when the lecturer won't listen even when what you did is trival

It is wrong for you to use crude word on your lecturer. The young allow the lecturer to go this far by:
1. Not apologizing for distracting the class.
2. Working away when told to live as if the lecturer does not matter.
I didn't use crude word on my lecturer, I remember apologizing to him I d class, it would have only gotten worse if he told me to leave the class and I didn't leave
