Are they not getting forex at the N197 rate?

cynthy2000:
With the current free fall of the Nigerian currency (Naira) against the major foreign currencies (Dollar, Pound, Euro etc.), the Nigerian government under president Muhammadu Buhari has stopped the sales of forex to parents of students studying abroad.

Parents of Nigerian students abroad who just last year obtained dollar at the then official exchange rate of ₦166 are now forced to obtain the dollar at the current parallel/black market rate of over ₦300. What this means is that parents who last year paid about ₦1.6 million for a $10,000 tuition fee abroad will now have to pay about ₦3 million for the same $10,000 tuition fee in foreign Universities/Colleges or withdraw their wards.

In an interview with Al Jazeera, President Buhari while responding to a question on the challenges faced by parents with kids in schools abroad, who are now facing the possibility of having to pull their kids out, simply said “If the country cannot afford it, so be it.”

When probed further by Al Jazeera's Martine Dennis about his children who obviously will continue their studies abroad, the president said "Those who can afford it, can still afford it. But for those who can’t, Nigeria cannot afford to allocate foreign exchange for those who decided to train their children outside the country. We can’t just afford it.”
“Well, that’s the true situation we are in.”

The federal government is convinced that the high demand for forex by parents of the students studying abroad has contributed to the current free fall of the Nigerian currency.

The president also frowned on those who received foreign exchange from the Central Bank of Nigeria(CBN) at the official exchange rate but divert same to make more profits.

“Anybody who is given dollars by the CBN to import pharmaceuticals and decides to go and sell at parallel market in order to make, maybe additional N100, we will pursue them and punish them”, the president vowed.

Let me ask you and be sincere if you were in the president's shoes with the current fall in the price of crude and the fact that forex is scarce please tell me what you will do?

Did u jst say simple economics? Ok let's do the economics. What if I told u restricting d sales of dollar contributed to d fall of naira. Lemme xplain. Simple economics tells u that wen a particular commodity is short in supply while its demand is high (demand being greater than supply), the price of such a commodity increases n continue to increase until supply meets demand and den other forces of the market stabilizes price.
What am I saying? PMB's dollar restriction is only giving the dollar more strenght. Example: the week Ubah releases some dollars into the market, dollar/naira conversion rate reduced.

Now pmb can afford to pay for his kids bt others shouldn't cus they r nt in power? President of d whole nation indeed.

The other day I was reading thisday where diamond bank published it's list of forex clients. I was amazed that almost half of the list were for School fees!! Even Olisah Metuh was on the list. Upon all the money he has chopped, he still needs to go to CBN to pay his children's fees? That's the point Buhari is making, the vast majority of people sending their kids abroad are not poor people, why should the country be discounting the education of their children, when by and large these are the people who neglected the educational system in the country, forcing them to educate their kids abroad. Most of these people can afford to buy their forex at the black market rate.

I am personally disappointed at Buhari's deprived mind on governance.
Diplomacy is part of what makes you a resounding leader, even when faced with the most discouraging news to pass across, a diplomatic leader will successfully pass across the info without being raw or rash.

What Buhari said is the bitter truth but as the father of the so many young Nigerian children abroad, there is a better way to put the matter across to them without breaking their spirit just because you can afford to send yours angry

Governance is not all about being plane but more of diplomacy and feelings for the people that voted you in.
No wonder, he declined going for the pre-election presidential debate and his numerous announcements whenever he's out of the country

Buhari is a round peg in a square hole

this is utter rubbish.

While it can be seen as a luxury to send your kids overseas to school, we must never forget that it is a KEY mechanism for knowledge transfer, and remains one of the best ways to
1) TRansfer knowledge and modern trends in medicine, science and technology and other fields

2) Ensure the next generation of lecturers and academics have the most exposure to the latest developments

I much rather the Govt continues aiding students to get access to forex at official rates than keep lavishing our precious forex on dinosaurs like Dangote that pay barely any tax.

I am a study abroad agent but I must say the truth. We have not seen any significant effect on our environment since Nigerians have been studying abroad. The opportunity has been reduced to obtaining the certificate rather than skill transfer. Studying abroad is synonymous to travelling globally. Our leaders are well travelled but we can't see the significance of their exposure in our society. In as much as I am not happy with the development, I can not outrightly blame Buhari.

Until Nigeria stop spending our foreign exchange on fuel import, scarcity of dollar we continue. We need to produce fuel locally, this is killing our economy. Algeria reserved is $155 billion while Nigeria reserved is $28 billion and the crude oil price cannot sustain our foreign exchange demand.

So if the oil dries up, what will happen? Nigeria will cease to exist huh? The president is hollow headed just like his governors that's why they can't think outside the box. All they think and depend on is crude oil and their online foot soldiers like you who rarely make up 3 meals a day go on chanting their praise. Well the court jester dies a Jester while the King dies a King.

You still have not said the solution...only repeating the obvious problem. Now Ubah released dollars...CBN has urged other independent players to come into the market because they already have plans for their limited funds.

You cannot sell what you dont have. Lifting restrictions when there is nothing to sell is dead on arrival

Most commenters are just being contrary & antagonistic for petty reasons...

If anyone needs subsidized forex to pay fees, then it's safe to conclude they can barely afford it... which is the crux of the matter..

Education is important ,but foreign education is only useful for the recipient & relatives so it's not a major national emergency that will warrant that pharmaceutical, raw materials for essential goods & services oil, life threatening medical ailments etc take a back seat to it...

We can keep pretending like we don't know the dilemma of a mono export economy with decline in the value of such commodity but our precarious situation is clear for the Late Ray Charles to decipher...
