Tottenham Hotspur remain keen to sign Curtis Davies from West Bromwich Albion despite yesterday recruiting the France Under-21 defender Younes Kaboul from Auxerre. Spurs are prepared to pay £6m for Davies and offer Wayne Routledge, valued at £2.5m by the north London club, as part of the deal. That package, however, does not appeal to Albion, with the Championship club demanding more for a player who attracted a £10m bid last year.

Davies has already had a transfer request rejected by Albion but privately they are resigned to losing their captain. There was interest from Portsmouth last summer as well as Arsenal but, after a largely disappointing season which was interrupted by injury and a loss of form, Tottenham have emerged as the only suitors this summer. Martin Jol rates Davies highly and, with Anthony Gardner set to move on, the Spurs manager is eager to increase his defensive options.
Using Routledge as a makeweight in the Davies transfer would help Spurs reduce the financial burden but it is understood that the former Crystal Palace winger, who spent last season on loan at Fulham, is not keen on playing in the Championship. Moreover, Albion do not believe he is worth £2.5m, presenting an impasse that will be overcome only if Spurs strengthen their interest by making a straight-cash bid nearer the £8m mark.

Kaboul's transfer fee has not been disclosed but it is thought to be around £8m. His arrival represents a major coup, with Inter and Roma also interested. Kaboul will compete for a place with Michael Dawson and Ledley King, who is currently recovering from knee surgery and facing a race to be fit for the new season. "Younes has power, pace and is good on the ball and strong in the air," said Tottenham's sporting director, Damien Comolli. "He is a good leader who showed a great desire to come to us despite interest and offers from numerous other clubs."

King's persistent injury problems prompted Comolli to search for a potential replacement. Kaboul has featured regularly in the Auxerre first team for the past two seasons and, at 21, is in keeping with Spurs' policy of signing players with potential. "If you ask people in France who is seen as the hottest prospect in defence, they will say Younes Kaboul," added Jol.

ENIC has made an offer for the remaining shares in Tottenham but taking 100% control of the club appears unlikely. After buying Sir Alan Sugar's shares for £25m the sports and media group has made a mandatory cash offer for the remainder of the club under City rules but is understood to be happy with the club being on the Stock Exchange.

Tottenham
Spurs are moving in on Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips and could take their summer spending to almost £50 million with the £12 million acquisition.

But Chelsea's Peter Kenyon doesnt want to sell, saying Spurs will be a threat to them soon, so they want to offload him instead to Aston Villa!

Greedy Lot!

Hi Xsay, how are u??

Jose Mourinho believes this Tottenham are serious contenders in this year's Premier League championship race.

The Chelsea manager is convinced big-spending Spurs have the artillery to contend for the coveted crown and has been impressed that they fended off the predators interested in picking off star player Dimitar Berbatov during the summer.

Mourinho said: "I look at Manchester in the same way I look at all the others and not as a stronger candidate.

"I'm convinced Chelsea will be a very strong team and we don't have to have fear about taking on any opponent.

"But the champions will be from this group of five teams. There are more rivals than just Manchester.

"At Liverpool there has been a big investment in three important attacking players.

"Arsenal have a young, high-quality squad. And there's Tottenham, who have the potential to fight for the title after investment without losing their most important players — starting with Dimitar Berbatov. Because of that we are in a very strong league."

Mourinho's comments come a day after it was revealed top brass at Chelsea, including chief executive Peter Kenyon, are reluctant to sell Shaun Wright-Phillips to Spurs because their fear the developing power at White Hart Lane.

Mourinho also added that becoming kings of Europe is not necessarily his main priority this season. "There is no obsession to win the Champions League on my part," he added. "My obsession is to work harder and better to improve the quality of football practised by the team. I want to win everything but I know I have to be conscious you can't always win everything."

@ Loyika,

Truth be told.
Spurs have closed the margin into a thin film now.
The difference between the 2 teams was huge some 2-3 seasons ago but it aint anymore.
If Wenger does not tighten his belt, Spurs might just finish above Arsenal this season. grin
Re: Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Inc by loyika(m): 5:29pm On Jul 19, 2007
The only way Spurs will finish above Arsenal, is on Fantasy Football grin

Jackal, what gap is closing

Oh!! you might be thinking because they got Bent for 16 mil they will now be a force shocked, lets see here, They get Berv, they would be a force, errr!! Nope! They get Zakora, they would be a force, errr!! Nope! They get Davids, they would be a force, errr!! Nope!

@ Loyika,

Liverpool has finished above Arsenal in 2 successive seasons now.
Who woulda thought that could happen even in 2004(Unbeaten run season).
The gap is closing down on Arsenal. It was the way the Gap closed on Man United after 2000/01 season.
All these lower teams are beefing up and to be honest, i think Martin Jol has done a wonderful job at Spurs.
Lets see what pans out and i also think Berbatov was the signing of last season. He was awesome!!!!!!
Re: Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Inc by loyika(m): 5:46pm On Jul 19, 2007
This season was just because Crapista couldn't just stick at bloody pen away at Pompey tongue

No one is saying that Spurs won't be a force, or might not beat Arsenal anytime this season (even that would be a miracle for them, and they know it grin) what i am saying is; SPURS WILL NOT FINISH ABOVE ARSENAL. I repeat, IT WAS WRITTEN!! grin As any Spuddie you see, they are always made aware of this fact even before their season starts, they've known it since 1995 cheesy cheesy

Hi Loyika, Vieira and Howdy Jackal, Yeah yeah, we hear the same talk all the time, objectivity is the thing, not fanatical talk!

As u said Jackal, the gap is closing! Its actually fantastic to know that the Premiership is NOT about 2 or 3 teams anymore, Fantastic , can't wait for August 11.

Anyway, cant blab too much cos am rather poorly today, but we havent spent this much in previous seasons and its so good that Tottenham attracts quality players nowadays. Just investigate the transfer senerio of the period, my Lilywhites have been mentioned in numerous transfer rumours.

Let The Games Begin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Birmingham agree £6m fee for Mido

Mido has struggled for opportunities at Spurs
Birmingham have agreed a £6m deal with Spurs for striker Mido.
The 24-year-old Egyptian star had been expected to move to Birmingham on a one-year loan deal after struggling to make an impact at Spurs last season.

But now a permanent move has been struck, subject to Mido agreeing personal terms with Birmingham and passing a medical.

Mido will be Birmingham boss Steve Bruce's biggest buy of the summer so far if the deal goes through.

He is now further down the pecking order after Spurs signed Darren Bent.

Birmingham boss Bruce has also made an enquiry about Mido's Egypt and Spurs team-mate, Hossam Ghaly, as he looks to build on the squad that earned promotion last season.

NEWS

Our Vodacom Challenge campaign continued in Cape Town with a 2-1 victory over Orlando Pirates.

It was a reverse of the scoreline on our last visit in 2003 and goals from Darren Bent and Wayne Routledge made the difference, although Pirates did reduce the deficit with a three-times taken penalty five minutes from time.

Just three players who started our opening game against Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday were on duty at the beginning of the encounter with Orlando Pirates - Younes Kaboul, although he only lasted a few minutes in Durban, Jermaine Jenas and Wayne Routledge were retained. Paul Stalteri and Pascal Chimbonda got their first action of the pre-season period, while the strike pairing was Jermain Defoe and Darren Bent.

Like in Durban, there was a sizzling atmosphere inside the Newlands Stadium with even the players warming up signalling an increase in the volume.

The game was lively from the off on a cool evening after a day of torrential rain and it took just 12 minutes for Bent to add to his pre-season account. Tom Huddlestone pulled the strings with a flighted throughball that found the striker in the clear and our close season recruit calmly lofted the ball over Francis Chansa in the Pirates' goal and it was quickly nestling in the back of the net.

Pirates responded by forcing Radek Cerny into his first save of the game when Josephy Kamwendo tried his luck from distance before a Routledge cross just evaded the lunge of Defoe at the far post.

On 25 minutes though it looked like an equaliser was about to arrive when Lebohang Mokoena sprinted clear with just Cerny to beat. The goalkeeper saved, but the ball ran loose and the striker was offered a second bite, this time blasting high and wide.

Just after the half hour mark, Kaboul, who was impressing with defensive solidity, showed that he has a mean shot on him too. A Huddlestone free-kick was rolled in his direction and the central defender blasted in a shot that rattled the outside of the right hand upright with Chansa beaten all ends up.

Taarabt then took aim from a little further out and forced the chest of Chansa into a vital block before Bent turned provider for Huddlestone, who could not find the target from around ten yards.

Mokoena blasted a cross into the path of Joseph Makhanya in the opening moments of the second half, causing a degree of confusion with no ultimate danger.

Captain for the night Jenas - very much the conductor in midfield - teed up Huddlestone for a shot that Chansa did well to field and then the pass-master Huddlestone picked out a sublime defence dissecting throughball to set Bent on the run again. He beat the keeper once more, but on this occasion Destin Makita dropped deep to clear off the line.

There was a sweet passage of passing and movement on 69 minutes when Taarabt and Jenas combined to pick out Routledge inside the area and the winger applied an instant touch into the path of the advanced Taarabt, who blasted goalwards, but didn't quite find the target.

It marked the end of Taarabt's night as he was replaced by Jamie O'Hara, with Jenas making way for Steed Malbranque. A further goal was probably deserved but was proving to be elusive as the clock ticked towards full-time.

Cerny produced a fine save to preserve our advantage ten minutes from time, palming out a free-kick from Ralph Matema. Bennet Chenane headed back across goal presenting Rudzani Ramudzuli with an opportunity in front of goal that was blazed over.

Cerny saved again in spectacular fashion before Malbranque strode forward and crossed low for Routledge to drill home and double the advantage.

There followed big drama at the other end when Chimbonda fouled inside the area and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Matema's spot-kick was saved by Cerny but a re-take was ordered and this time Josephy Kamwendo stepped up and Cerny saved again.

Another re-take was ordered and Kamwendo did manage to find the net with ten minutes remaining, but victory was banked and it is now on to the final in Johannesburg.

Pirates: Francis Chansa, 14 Lucky Lekgwathi, 28 Destin Makita, 17 Lehlohonolo Seema, 19 Innocent Mdledle, Mlingisi Gumbi, 7 Josephy Kamwendo, 24 Joseph Makhanya (20 Ramudzuli, 62), 11 Bennet Chenene, 23 Lebohang Mokoena (Teferra, 69), 36 Ralph Matema (Walaza, 80). Subs: Senzo Meyiwa, Tonic Chabalala, Linda Mkhwanazi, Luntu Mazana, Bheki Mlambo, Jorry Merahe, Tlou Segolela, Tebogo Mashaba, Manuel Bucuane.

Spurs: Cerny, Chimbonda, Stalteri, Kaboul, Gardner, Routledge, Jenas (O'Hara, 69), Huddlestone, Taarabt (Malbranque, 69), Bent, Defoe. Subs: Robinson, Dawson, Rocha, Daniels, Maghoma, Zokora, Keane.

The battle of the big five!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

July 27, 2007

JOSE MOURINHO claims there will be five clubs in contention for the title in the new season — and the cost of success has never been higher.

Everyone knows about the top flight’s big four — champions Man United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal.

But Mourinho predicts Spurs are ready to come to the party as well.

With the Premier League contenders all spending a small fortune on new signings, the pressure to deliver is immense.

And no one will be feeling the heat more than the men whose job it will be to deliver the goals.

Here:

GOALS , Saha and Ronaldo

MANCHESTER UNITED

STRIKERS

WAYNE ROONEY (Goals last season 23, Dream Team value £8m)

LOUIS SAHA (13, £4.5m)

CRISTIANO RONALDO (23, £8m)

OLE GUNNAR SOLKSJAER (11, £3m)

VERDICT

IT is not hard to see why boss Alex Ferguson is so determined to sign Carlos Tevez.

Solksjaer and Saha are injury prone and, with the best will in the world, Ronaldo will struggle to score so many goals again from out wide.

That leaves Rooney as United’s only true world-class striker and he spends much of his time outside the penalty area.

Argentinian Tevez would be the perfect addition to the United strikeforce, judging by his superlative efforts in keeping West Ham up last season.

But the red tape shows no sign of being sorted, so Fergie may be left a little short.

BACK-UP , Kalou and Pizarro

CHELSEA

STRIKERS

DIDIER DROGBA (Goals last season 32, Dream Team value £8.5m)

ANDRIY SHEVCHENKO (14, £5m)

CLAUDIO PIZARRO (12, £3m)

SALOMON KALOU (9, £3m)

VERDICT

IF Jose Mourinho plays with only one up front next season, the prolific Drogba is in for a busy season.

If he plays with two, then Ukrainian hitman Shevchenko is going to have to show a major improvement on his first disappointing campaign in the Premier League.

Despite the arrival of free transfer Pizarro from Italy, Chelsea still look short of attacking options.

RED HOT , Crouch and Torres

LIVERPOOL

STRIKERS

FERNANDO TORRES (Goals last season 15, Dream Team Value £5.5m)

DIRK KUYT (14, £5m)

PETER CROUCH (18, £4.5m)

ANDRIY VORONIN (10, £3m)

VERDICT

IT’S all change again in the striker department at Anfield where £21.5m new-boy Torres will lead the attack while the rest battle for the right to partner the Spaniard up front.

Yet in spite of his glowing reputation, Torres has never been a 25-goals-a-season marksman and Rafa Benitez could have cause to regret edging Crouch towards the sidelines.

Craig Bellamy has also been moved on — to West Ham — so expect more squad harmony.

LIMELIGHT , Adebayor and Van Persie

ARSENAL

STRIKERS

ROBIN VAN PERSIE (Goals last season 13, Dream Team value £5.5m)

EDUARDO DA SILVA (34, £3.5m)

EMMANUEL ADEBAYOR (12, £5m)

THEO WALCOTT (1, £4m)

VERDICT

THE giant shadow of Thierry Henry still looms over Arsenal and there is huge pressure on Arsene Wenger’s young strikers to deliver.

New £10m signing Da Silva will find goals a lot harder to come by in England than they were in Croatia.

So Van Persie will carry a hefty burden after finally recovering from a six-month injury. Adebayor will give a more muscular option.

OPTIONS , Keane and Bent

TOTTENHAM

STRIKERS

DIMITAR BERBATOV (Goals last season 22, Dream Team value £7.5m)

DARREN BENT (15, £4.5m)

ROBBIE KEANE (22, £5m)

JERMAIN DEFOE (18, £4m)

VERDICT

SPURS have more natural finishers than any other club in the country and the arrival of £17m Darren Bent leaves Martin Jol with an embarrassment of attacking riches.

Bulgarian Berbatov remains his main man but whether Bent can become an effective partner remains to be seen.

Robbie Keane and Jermain Defoe are also established internationals so keeping them all happy will be Jol’s biggest problem in the months ahead.
