grin grin grin hopefully this settles the style of play argument going on wink

the write is right, I miss those days

those days Kanu will invent one move out of nothing, not to mention, JJ dribbling runs, and the ever enterprising wing plays, anchored by Finidi, Elastic, Emma, Sia1, to mention a few

the reason why Ronaldinho was a delight to watch was, cos he fused the samba dance into his dribbling tricks

So Oliseh lacked physicality? Oliseh was just like Busquets? Do you think you're talking to a kid?

Oliseh was always a key part of our football playing. Not just rugged. He was a master of passing.

By what name again would you call Physicality, ruggedness, power play?

Amokachi had small skill, Amuneke and Siasia too. Plus to balance we had Okocha, Finidi, Kanu, Ikpeba to balance out the attributes you mentioned

Physicality in football is not about muscle.

Physical (PHY), also knows as Physicality, is a Player Attribute in FIFA that represents the physical and body status of a player. Players with high PHY rating, are able to win the physical battles on the pitch and maintain their fitness throughout a full match.

All our players had skills.

I remembered the game against Zambia in 1994 AFCON, the Zambians were physical likewise Nigeria.

spot on and if you watch the good old Days celebration you will know it is really ''yori yori'' style from the dribbles to the sexy style of play to even the celebration where mokachi and the likes do some nice dance steps to complement things wink

It is the philosophy. The possessive game. The Rondos training and the infusion of the principles into the game.

It has variants but the essential principles stand. Guardiola never abandoned it. Try and watch Manchester City matches and see how much short passes we make.

2 or 3 short passes....volla long balls to tear the defense. My man, Guardiola has moved on from Tiki Taka.

We played with speedy and good dribblers on the flanks. Those dribblers wow the crowd, not tiki taka.
This acclaimed Dutch system has lead majority of Nigerians astray with false idea of how we really play the game.
If you notice, we don't produce defenders with sublime ball playing skills. Taribo, Okechukwu, Yobo, Okoronkwo etc were never ball playing defenders.

How do you play total football without ball playing center backs?
Uche Okechucwu was a ball playing defender though limited skills Joseph Yobo played the ball often on the ground,Chidi Nwanu love it on the ground....oh my God the master of them all is Stephen Keshi with 9 goals for SE.

Agreed on Taribo,Okoronkwo and good we have enough ball playing defenders like Awaziem,Leon Balogun and Akpoguma.

When some of us say we play like the Dutch we are talking about attacking play from the wings, backed by a creative midfield and fullbacks who overlap occasionally. Dutch style is not necessarily tiki taka but what I would call an attractive direct style making use of skill and creativity to open up your opponents. Whereas tiki taka simply put is passing your adversary to death.

Yes we are physical and rugged but there's a lot of sublime skill and creativity in that mix. Watch Bonfere and Siasia teams then you will understand what I mean.

No disputes about it.

Pls I want you to talk on how we conceded the late equalizing goal against Italy in US 94....do we say Oliseh was rugged enough cos a real physical player would have intercepted that ball with ease but Oliseh failed.

Of course, we have a decent option in Amunike , but I am concerned he isn't match tested , of late. Since he was relieved of his job , as the head coach of Tanzania national team , I don't think he has coached any other team. It would have helped a great deal if he 'd engaged himself work-wise or go back to school to gain more knowledge and ideas and make his CV look better.

SN: Something in me still wants Oliseh , but I think Oliseh has some serious personality problems. A good coach but not a good manager.

I can't wait for Finidi to coach the U23.
how is Oliseh a good coach? I need you to educate us

Some people don't even know that Taribo West was trained by Coach Monday Sinclair with the aim to take over Keshi. He had the defensive talent but was totally skilless. grin

A former Sharks defender who later assisted Coach Amodu while he coached Sharks narrated how Sinclair spent a lot of time teaching Taribo how to be a skillful player.

He explained that Sinclair used to tell Taribo that if he does not up his skills he would end up a carpenter.

What I am trying to highlight is that ball playing has been a big part of our play. Even Taribo who was not too that skillful.

In France 98, when under pressure, I think against Denmark, Taribo pulled off a ball spin skill that had the whole crowd shouting.

The Dutch can be rough o forget don't you remember the world cup games against Portugal (2006) and Spain (2010) when they da si rough the game?

Barryseal:

The Dutch style is pure total football. We're everybody is confortable on the ball. They rely more on technicality than physical strength and power.
