Charlton midfielder Joe Aribo is due to have a medical at Rangers on Monday before completing his move to Ibrox this week.

The 22-year-old’s contract expires this summer and he told Lee Bowyer on Friday that he will quit Charlton to sign for Steven Gerrard's Rangers.

Charlton will only receive a fee of around £300,000 when Aribo makes a cross-border move.

The Addicks would have been due a much larger compensation package had Aribo stayed in England.

He attracted interest from Premier League and Championship clubs but decided to join Rangers ahead of their Old Firm rivals Celtic.

Bowyer had hoped to convince Aribo to sign a contract extension at Charlton when the pair met on Friday.

Aribo played a key role to help Charlton secure promotion from League One and his departure is a blow for Bowyer as he plans for life in the Championship.

The opportunity to play under former Liverpool captain Gerrard was a big factor behind Aribo’s decision to join Rangers.

After completing his medical, Aribo is expected to meet up with Gerrard and the Rangers squad at their pre-season training camp in Portugal on Tuesday.

So what's the essence of hosting a cup in their country then? I think that should be part of the reasons for staging the competition right on their soil.

You're mistaken. It's hardly their business.

More from Van Gaal on Messi:

"And I believe that every player must play for the team - even Messi. [Barcelona] have a staff of 30 players and I think Messi must adapt to the team and not the other way around.

"[Pep] Guardiola did play for the benefit of the team but recent coaches have adapted too much to Messi instead of protecting the team spirit. That is the most important."

Assessing Barca's 4-0 semi-final second-leg loss to Liverpool, Van Gaal said: "If there is a true team spirit, at the highest level this result is impossible."

Lesson for Papa Rohr. Nothing more important than the team player.

Rohr needs to get Mikel into a position where he can get the team ticking in passes. Move Mikel to the central midfield role to orchestrate play and his importance will show.
