Central A/C is like cooking with a giant pot in the hope that everybody is hungry...
Some will not eat after all.

Split units ensure localized climate control.
They are also easier to replace.

I don't think they are cost effective.

You are quite right. Cost effectiveness is the key consideration.

Have you heard of the global award winning Solacoat technology?

Solacoat cools homes and office even without air conditioners or electricity.

Kindly see link below to watch how air conditioning and energy consumption can be downsized to achieve substantial cost recovery.

But all the old structures in OAU, Ile-Ife have central air conditioning systems, though most of them no longer function due to lack of maintenance.

Bro. Those cooling systems are probably due for change. Though durable HVAC (Central AC) systems last for a much as 30 or more years; the maintenance and spare parts needed ( if the product is shipped from abroad) might become a problem.

@op the client determines (finally) if a building is going to have central AC or not.

HVAC systems have high initial financial outlay, but over time, compared to split ACs, their mmaintenance are more cost effective. Many clients however like to cut costs hence the choice for splits.

Hope you know the new senate building has been reverted to split AC system. Cost cutting measures.

A central air conditioner would normally require a 3-phase power supply. In Nigeria, a lot of time there would be light on one or two phases and no light on the other phase or two. That is why people keep switching the phases to get connected to the phase with light.
If you have a central a.c., it would have a hard time working properly under such situations. You will need to have light on all 3 phases.

It's not your fault. It's the mod that pushed the topic to frontpage.

You and I are not in the same category to chat about technology.

You're looking at a residential building and you're here talking about split HVAC.

Go line up for your petrol.

Why is it that our Engineers don't design a central Air conditioning systems in our high rise buildings. Is it that they are not cost effective or difficult to maintain?

Our architects are not innovative...No offense to dos in d proffession but its true

Why do u think Builders do a better Job on site and when I say Builders I mean those that didnt go to skol oo..

Central A.C is not an Architect's job.
The mechanical Engineers are in charge of such jobs and not Architects.
Factors affecting usage of Central A.C
1. Client's choice or requirements
2. Technical know-how
3. Maintenance culture
4. Availability and sustainability
5. Etc.

You cannot. It's a residential building not an office.

Do you guys even apply yourself before approaching the keyboard?

So you want unit a to be paying for units b to z AC usage?

Think, it's free.

Spot on
ADAMUdaCOWBOY:

Oga they are, its just perception. In maintaining central acs, you go to a single plant room while in the case of the pictures above you keep jumping from unit to unit. I think just we have this pound wise penny foolish miserly attitude that makes us think hiring building services engineers is a waste of money. Abroad the building services industry is a goldmine but in Nigeria if you want to go hungry then study it.

1 thermostat can only control one condenser in a central a/c system.

All of you that say you can control the temperature of many zones must have many commercial grade condensers on top of or around your building.

That is very different than a central a/c system for your house or apartment.

Stop misinforming the public. You can control a specific zone while on HVAC. That's why there are thermostats.

Obviously you lack the depth needed or you wouldn't have exposed yourself like this.

In an office yes but it in a residential edifice shown.

Thank you Sir.

The picture is of residences. How can they possibly have a split system for the whole edifice?

Y not say what u are sure.
Some flats might have 2 or 3 regulators.
Which means some rooms like sitting rooms and masters room might have their own seperate regulators.

Do you know what VRF is?

msogunro:
Hahahahahahaha!!!! One of the outdoor units is covering a window. Hilarious. How is it even secured. They should invest in a multi split system.

With central a/c units, you cool/heat an entire house when you only need the room you're in conditioned.

Splits are more effecient because you can cool just the zone that you're in.

You think having individual units is more cost effective than a centralised unit?

Abeg, go back to school. grin grin grin grin grin grin

That is like saying 20 people having individual cars to go to the same destination is more cost effective than 20 people sharing a big bus. grin grin grin grin grin
