Nigeria Spends N14,000 Daily To Feed Each Prisoner — Minister by Okimski(m): 2:42pm On May 11, 2016
Nigerian government is annually spending N10billion for feeding of prisoners in the country, minister of Interior, AbdurRahman Dambazau has said.
With the country’s estimated prison population of 57,000, the government is roughly spending N14,000 for a three-square meal of each per day
Speaking at a town hall meeting in Kaduna on Tuesday, Dambazau said his ministry is searching inward to see how it can harness some revenue sources in the sector to complement government’s efforts.
“It is unacceptable for government to be commiting N10 billion every year on feeding of prison inmates,” Dambazau said.

Now can you imagine a Minister opening his wide mouth to spew this rubbish? What do they take Nigerians for? So a prisoner spends an average of N4650 per meal? And our minimum wage is N18000. And this administration is not fantastically corrupt! This administration is very bold at spewing out figures, without correlating it with common sense and simple economics. That means that the prison must have a big menu for each prisoner;
Breakfast: 2 tins of peak milk, 4 eggs, 4 chicken laps, a bottle of wine, chocolate pudding for desert, 5 bottled water (Must be EVA).

Lunch; Garri/Fufu/semovita/tuwo/ (at the prisoner's liberty), one whole chicken, ice cream, juice.

Dinner; Pap,Fried plantain, 900g of Peak milk, Sharwarma/mutton/turkey(soft), wine, and bottled water.

Ps; Extra meal can be requested. Eating in between meals can also be arranged

Even with this your salivating analysis, no any meal there is up to #4650.

They are only over inflating the price to make room for embezzlement. Na God go punish them.

N14.000 for the watery beans? There is corruption in the food procurement system of the Nigerian Prison service as l know for fact that their contractors source for low quality foodstuff for a far cheaper price as against what is stated it was paid. I remember that most of the weevil infested beans at the Akwata section of Ogbete main market Enugu usually ended up at the prisons! angry

This is a lie. The minister is alleged to have said this in a public forum and yet no major newspaper reported it except an obscure blog? The correct figure is 200 Naira per prisoner per day.
Re: Nigeria Spends N14,000 Daily To Feed Each Prisoner — Minister by donogaga(m): 6:48am On May 12, 2016
Perhaps what the minister actually wanted to say was N14,000 monthly. That's N400/N500 daily. Slip of tongue bear with him please. Remember in all Nigerian secondary schools. The average 3 square meals is N300 daily. Lol.

And to think that NGN18,000 is the minimum wage. Smh

On the contract award letter for contractors supplying food to inmates, it is less than 150 per meal inclusive of gas or firewood.

No. In one day, a prisoner is #4,000 short of spending the minimum wage.

Dambazzau is a thief and shameless. He and all former Ministers of interior should be quizzed by the EFFC and charged to Court already

Since the writer of such a mischievous  story has shown
that he does not understand simple arithmetic let alone
getting his facts together before going public,  I have
decided to educate him a little on the subject matter.

In last year's budget, the sum of N450 was appropriated for
each prison inmate per day; this includes N150 for gas! And
there are 65, 000 inmates nationwide.

Now, if you multiply N450 by 65, 000 you will get N29, 250,
000 as the total amount consumed by prisoners everyday. So,
to get the yearly cost, you multiply N29, 250, 000 by 365
which is the number of days we have in a year. Now, if you
do this, you will get N10, 676, 250, 000 being the annual
amount spent on prisoners.

The Minister also said that government cannot sustain this
huge amount spent on feeding prisoners alone. Hence, the
Ministry is looking at other options such as the reviving of
the  moribund prison farms which he ordered their reopening
last year!
