Steven Johnson syndrome is not new.
You guys should stop causing panic always.
We see cases every now and then.
Its an advers hypersensitivity reaction to some medications example penicillin based medications or sulphonamides.

Folks no need to panic. Just alert your doctor if u react to any drug by itching or feeling dizzy for examples. SJS is not new. So this is no news.

how is steven johnson syndrome a new disease?........2 months ago in my paediatric posting as a medical student.....saw 2 children dat developed it as a result of hypersensitivity rxn to carbamizipine.......one died nd one survived......even they developed one worse than SJS which is Toxic epidermal necrolysis(TEN) in which >30% of the body surface was affected.

management involves stopping the drug; preventing infection, as the skin barrier to infection has been broken and management of complications that may arise especially fluid and electrolyte imbalance.....improvement is rapid in uncomplicated cases.

other common drugs that may cause it include.....septrin, some HIV drugs and fansidar etc

Further proof that Nigeria is doomed, if our own minister of health does not know enough about Stevens-Johnson Syndrome to prevent him from putting out this really ignorant statement.

Steven Johnsons syndrome isn't new to naija na...had about two cases in Ubth last year and 2years ago..... it's mainly an adverse reaction to some drugs....especially NSAIDS ...and about it being contagious,i don't think so..
Self-medication is so wrong...I really wish Nigerians would be more enlightened about d dangers of self medication....

imagine d last tym my grandma visited, I caught her searching my room...when I asked her y she was in my room, she said she was looking for red tablets...(she believes all red tablets are blood medicines) It took d intervention of my parents for her to give me all d red tablets in her possesion....

Self medication is so wrong

Sulphonamides not NSAIDs

Are we supposed to be fearful of this new deadly disease?

Abeg ask this disease to take its place in the line of deadly diseases that is supposed to b making us fearful.

HIV , Ebola , Lassa, Malaria, Cancer

Should we lose sleep because a new disease has arrived?

Me? I will continue to sleep well tonight.

Self medication is so wrong

Exactly!

This has been around.

It can be regarded as a type of adverse drug reaction. It is caused by hypersensitivity to certain drugs and infections in certain people.

And definitely isn't contagious!

A horrible and misleading press release I must say!

Imagine a minister of health (Prof) and consultant saying such!

Oga moderator..this your headline is catchy ooo but the content of the thread is well exaggerated.

SJS has been in existence for many years . It's from reactions to drugs and has better prognosis than TEN(toxic epidermal necrolysis)

It can affect anyone

Surprised the Dr a Consultant is saying its a new decease after reporting it was discovered by the person named after.

And its a lie that it is contagious, its not

However as stated its due mainly to drug reaction, particularly drugs containing SULPHUR, hence any patient reacting to such medication are advised to indicated, when prescribed with any Drug.
