Calm down, I am pro- fiscal federalism. You guys should be given your oyel.

JKN Waku is wrong by assuming that the SS will die of starvation if the North withholds food supply, just as many of the chestbeaters on NL(and sadly many more offline) believe that other sections of the country will perish if they are deprived of SS oil.
Like I said earlier, we need to get this phase over with ASAP so the rest of the country can focus on other sectors as we are so abundantly blessed.
Last I googled, even less endowed Sudan is still thriving.

See? I'm on your side.

Sudan is not 'thriving' - far from it. They're now crying to the Americans to life the sanctions that were imposed as a result of their compliance in harboring Islamic terrorists and their abuse of citizens in Darfur.

They were fine when the South Sudanese were financing their adventures but have been in decline ever since the South Sudanese fought and won their independence.

Those folks talking rubbish here. Was it not with moni from agric that was used to build the oil sector? Mumu...
On the other hand, if the greedy leaders from Niger-Delta are truthful to the common Niger-Deltan, u will know that Niger-Delta is really taking much from this county's pocket..na them them dey chop the heavy allocation. Abi na only Ijaws be Niger-Deltans? Na the illiterate ijaws dey form this wahala. Rubbish...without yam, can u work to produce the oil? Let Lagos begin their exploitation, na then una go shot up..

The primary money earners before oil were palm oil - from the ND and the east and Cocoa from the West.

Groundnut was never a prime cash crop, that is why the south was joined with the north - because on its own the north is not economically viable.

Before the oil, we had cocoa, we had
palm oil, groundnut and pyramid, and those were
the things that actually helped to develop the oil.
Idiots! we used d cocoa, groundnut n palm oil money to develop the oil finished, u come dey shout "our oyel" "our oyel" up and down. Na u cultivate d oyel wey e dey grow for ground ba? Lazy-heads!

South Sudan is a new nation, a region that was neglected for many years, whose resources were used to build the north.

But in the long run they will be better off.

Their war is not over. They've splintered into different factions fighting a new civil war in their new hardly settled country. The first thing they did was to assassinate their new president who helped fight for their independence. All of this in a struggle for control between so called brothers. Apparently they were better off under the old Sudan. Secession is never the answer.

Human beings will always have differences and until they confront them they will linger. As painful as war is it allows people an opportunity to establish an order and release their anger - it sounds unpleasant but that is the unfortunate truth. Just as it isn't good for individuals to stay pent up, the same is true for individuals.

People have the right to self-determination, as per the UN. Borders are typically made by men and should be redrawn by men if need be.

You say that South Sudan was better under the old system but in the long run, they will be better. Nothing worthwhile happens overnight and this current generation may not get to benefit but the children and grandchildren will be better off once a system has been put in place.

By your logic Singapore should have remained anchored to Malaysia because secession is not the answer (actually they were booted out of the union). Likewise the United States should have remained a British colony because nations should not look to break away. History shows that your assertion is wrong. Nations need a commonality to work - the experiment that is the European Union, a system designed to stop the Europeans from slaughtering each other is floundering as a result of their numerous differences.

As for Nigeria, the southern states are already better off in every indices and would excel if left alone by the north that favors a destructive unitary system of government. How much better would they be if the north went its own way? Who would suffer? Certainly not the south.

God bless you brother also not forgetting that the progress of any economy is measured by the value of her per capital income. If the GDP is divided by the number of the population, you'll find out oil has been a curse to us rather than a blessing. So NDA should please continue to blow up the Cursed temple of oil and force government to get serious and stop looking for easy money and zero economical progress and of course bring an end to this stoop!d "our oyel" bullshit.
For God's sake there are loads of countries without oil and doing real fine. Take a look at Canada..no oil, no explorable natural resources but they're doing very fine. What is wrong with Nigeria and Nigerians. What spell are we under?

slight correction. Canada has plenty oil

That will not be the case with the rest of Nigeria once this curse of oil is removed. We are way too blessed for that. Just hope our greedy politicians get a change of heart.

Oil is not a 'curse'.

It is certain people who are a curse.

Look at Nigeria's history, remind yourself who has stagnated development in Nigeria and which region still has terrible indices and that will explain it all.

How much is the yam, cattle or tomato contributing to the federation account?

And how much is oil contributing to the same account?

You run your cattle, tomato, yam, other agricultural businesses and mining yourselves. Let the Niger Deltans run their oil businesses themselves and pay taxes to the federal government where applicable.

Is that too difficult to understand?

While it is a blessing to you, it has been a curse to my region and all other non-oil-producing regions as these thieves called the elite have abandoned the exploration of all other revenue generating avenues in our regions to feast on proceeds from your oyel. I do not benefit from it anything special than these other resources can provide and as such if fiscal federalism is what will rewire my region into retracing it's steps in that regard, then so be it. At least, my state government wouldn't have been dull enough to hand over the keys to our only viable factory (the Benue Cement Company) to Dangote. It should have instead expanded it and also revamped the dead Taraku mills, BENRO, Otukpo Burnt Bricks Factory, Igumale Cement factory, Wanunne Tomato Factory, Katsina Ala fruit juice proceesing plant and a host of others lying fallow. The revenue accruing from the above listed would sustain my small state for centuries if well managed. That's how it should be in all regions. It is not the common non-oil producing man in my region that is feeding fat from the oil wells and quite frankly we all would be better off without it. Oil is not a blessing to my people in any way. It would be a thing of joy to see the ND be like Dubai and the rest of the U.A.E. However, make no mistake that the rest of us do not have our blessings too. The foolish old man who made that statement (drink your oil) should be ashamed of himself honestly.

With all due respect my brother, the examples of the United States and Singapore are not relevant because those were not secessions. The US fought for independence from Britain and Singapore was kicked out of a brief union with Malaysia which lasted only two years. By the way, the break up of the Czech and Slovak Republicans is also not an example of secession. That was a negotiated separation. The problems in the European Union are not related to secession either because they are a union of already sovereign states.

Examples of secession are what happened in the south of the United States during the civil war between 1861 and 1865. I'm sure most Americans now agree that it was a terrible mistake. Also recently, Scotland voted not to secede from the United Kingdom. People now realize that bigger is better in today's world in terms of market size and political influence.

Whatever problems Nigeria may be having, the solutions can be worked out and breaking up the country does not have to be one of them. We as a country are by far greater as a whole than the sum of our parts. We really have nothing else going for us apart from our size. The oil is becoming useless. However, a large cohesive economy will always be an advantage.

However, a large cohesive economy will always be an advantage.

Speaking of the US, Texas seceded from Mexico is significantly better off now than it was previously.

Finland seceded from Russia in 1917 and the other states within the Soviet Union seceded from Russia after 1990 - most of them are better off.

Ireland seceded from the United Kingdom and now fares better than the UK, especially Scotland (that has oil) and Wales.

And Croatia and Slovenia seceded from Yugoslavia. They were the wealthiest parts of that union and are noticeably more developed than Bosnia, Serbia and Moldova.

Federations work if the requisite regions support themselves, when one party is taking advantage of the hard work and natural resources of another then that is an unequal, exploitative relationship - that is the case with Nigeria. It is to be expected that the more industrious region will look to secede, no one wants to be handicapped. Even more so when there are minimal cultural ties.
