Every girl/woman wants to get married to the man of her dreams. The big problem, though, is learning how to recognize him when you see him. The reality is that the man of your dreams will often be hidden under the disguise of that not so handsome, average-height, shy brother at church, who steals glances at you when he thinks you’re not looking. The man of your dreams may be that guy asking you out who you think is not so bad but then again, is not really your type.

Young men are like seeds; they have immense capacity for growth and if you judge them based on their current circumstances, you might very well overlook a seed that is destined for greatness. But then again, not every seed does grow great, and not every young man will turn out great in the future so how exactly can you tell who’s who today? As much as potential doesn’t put food on the table, the last thing you want is to say no to that guy and end up saying “he used to ask me out” five years later when you see him on the cover of magazines.

It might surprise you to learn that it is really quite easy to tell if a guy is likely to be successful even from an early age. This is because champions are not made overnight, and most successful people achieved their success because they consistently displayed certain habits. Some of these habits will be surprisingly simple and seemingly little things.

1. He's Clean

Boys can be rough especially in their early 20’s but not washing or changing one’s underwear after 2-3 days is downright filthy. In fact it is rather irresponsible, given that that area down there is particularly prone to a number of bacterial infections. You might not be able to tell if a guy has changed his boxers but there are other clues. For example, does he wear dirty socks? Polish or clean his shoes? Iron his shirts? Comb his hair?

The fact is, if you take yourself serious, it will show in your appearance and if a guy has the seed of success growing within him, he will likely take himself serious and care about the way he looks. This does not mean he will squander his resources on expensive apparel, rather he just knows how to be neat and well presented.

2. He’s punctual

The truth is, what you should be looking for are signs that this guy takes himself and his life seriously. A smart guy who has plans and a strong focus for life, knows that time itself is a precious resource and as such he does not waste it. He only goes to the places he really wants to go to and he goes there because there is something to be gained that will improve his life in some way.

Consequently, he also never goes late to such occasions. He may not speak much, depending on his personality, but he always listens attentively and gets visibly frustrated when discussions stray from the point.

Note that punctuality also shows strong planning skills, as most people who habitually go late for events do so because they failed to plan their day appropriately. Planning skills are a key trait that help people channel their resources into their most profitable use.

3. He does not spend extravagantly

Although one of the signs of strong potential is a consistently clean and neat appearance, this guy does not spend extravagantly. If you do not know him well, you might think he is either broke or stingy but really, he just takes good care of his property and resources and only spends money when he sees an important reason to. Often, this young man will wear the same shirt thrice in a week but note that it will always be clean.

4. He’s genuinely nice

There is a saying that nice guys finish last, so you might be wondering if being nice is truly a sign that a guy is likely to achieve his potential in life. Well first of all let me just say that the notion that nice guys finish last is totally false or incomplete, without the addendum that they laugh best who laugh last.

Often, those who achieve easy success by dubious and not-so-nice means fizzle out quickly or run into disrepute. If finishing last means that you finish best, then the wise young lady knows where to pitch her tent.

Genuinely nice guys (fake nice guys are guys who only act nice to get what they want) are nice simply because they are in touch with a higher purpose, and understand that God is love and therefore any success achieved without love is meaningless. What is the point of achieving success without touching human lives?

5. He is always busy

With the exclusion of people who were born into money or win the lotto, have you ever heard of a person who achieved great wealth or success without working hard? Not likely. Even sports stars, musicians and actors all have to work hard for their money and the fame they get, often incurring a great opportunity cost in terms of leisure and family time.

So if you meet a young man who always has some free time on his hands, then you should be wary. The guy who is likely to max his potential in life will have already started working on his vision and long term projects and usually has one or two things he is doing towards this.

Caveat: be wary of guys who are busy doing too many things. This shows a lack of focus and focus is a key ingredient for success.

6. He is passionate

For some reasons, I have observed that women are often attracted to passionate men. Whatever the reason(s) for this may be, passion is a very important trait that will tell you just how much effort a man will put into chasing his goals and dreams. Of course, hard work is not always a guarantee of success, but with the right focus, it usually will yield a bountiful harvest.

7. He knows how to treat a woman

There are lots of successful guys who do not treat women right so you might be looking at this and having second thoughts; however, the right guy for you is one who understands that God made women to play a very important role in the lives of men, and if you’re going to be his woman, he is going to have to honor that God-given mandate.

Scientifically, there is significant research that shows that couples who get married earlier tend to achieve more success, and seem to have higher levels of happiness. A strong couple are better than a strong individual. A wise young man will recognize this principle, and it will show in the way he relates with women, particularly his significant other. If the guy you are with does not treat you right (which includes respecting the sanctity of your body), then you need to leave him today.


So is there a guy in your life who you have hitherto overlooked but you think might fit this description? The man of your dreams might be available right under your nose and if you don’t learn to recognize him, he may just get way. As we say in Nigeria, sister shine your eyes well.
