The most important thing about any issue is not the rhetoric and the many definitions. It is what we are able to do with the much we know about it.
The church has passed through a lot of changes which bordered on expansion and explosion in membership but not in the original sense of the word. Whether the number of persons meeting are few or many, the term ‘church’ still holds for them what it was in those days. Their place of meeting may not be in cathedrals, it could be in rooms or even in an open place, the important question is whether they constitute what can be called a congregation.
A church is a congregation of people who are distinguishable from others because of their common affinity to Jesus Christ, the term was derived from the Greek word ekklesia, which means, an assembly of called out ones.
Here the individual has undergone a change which differentiates him from the rest of the society. His views of the world is different, but in line with the person whose lifestyle he has undertaken to follow, it is this transformation of personality that led to the term, ‘Christians’ given to the followers of Jesus an Antioch (acts 11:26). They saw them as people living their life exactly the way Jesus did while He was here on earth. Their life which conformed to that of the master was an answered prayer to Jesus’ request while He was still here. He prayed to the father to keep them through because “they are not of this world” (John 17:16).
