Explorers: On May 28, 2013, divers in the wreckage of theJacson-4 were attempting a triage of the vessel, which 100 feet down off the coast of Nigeria after capsizing. What they didn't expect to find was a survivor.
Harrison Okene was the ship's cook. He was in the bathroom around 4am when the boat capsized upside down, and tried to reach an emergency exit hatch but failed. The boat began to fill with water with Okene trapped inside about 100ft below the ocean surface in complete darkness wearing only boxers. Eventually, he found himself trapped with a four square foot bubble of air with a cocacola. He knew he was running out of oxygen so he found a safe corner of the ship and used mattresses to block out water and created air pocket. After three days, he had given up hope. All the while, Okene heard sharks and barracudas fighting over the remains of his shipmates. Then he heard a knock, it was the hammer of the divers working on the surface of the ship. Okene surviving for 62 hour to the shock of the rescue divers, Okene was given diving gear and he was brought to a decompression chamber, where he had to spend two days. He had been at depths that should have killed him in a situation that took the lives of everyone else on board.
Unsurprisingly, he vowed never to go out to sea again.

Explorers: On April 26, 2003, Aron Ralston was hiking alone through Blue John Canyon, in eastern Wayne County, Utah, just south of the Horseshoe Canyon unit of Canyon lands National Park.
While he was descending a slot canyon, a suspended boulder, which became dislodged while he was climbing down from it in the canyon, crushed his right hand against the canyon wall. Ralston had not informed anyone of his hiking plans, so no one would have been searching for him. Assuming that he would die without intervention, he spent five days slowly sipping his small amount of remaining water, approximately 350 ml and slowly eating his small amount of food while trying to free his arm. His efforts were futile as he could not free his arm from the 800 lb (360 kg) chockstone.
After three days of trying to lift and break the boulder, the dehydrated and delirious Ralston prepared to amputate his trapped right arm at a point on the mid-forearm, in order to escape. He experimented with tourniquets and made some exploratory superficial cuts to his forearm in the first few days. On the fourth day he realized that in order to free his arm he would have to cut through the bones in it, but the tools he had available were insufficient to do so. When he ran out of food and water on the fifth day, he was forced to drink his own urine. He carved his name, date of birth and presumed date of death into the sandstone canyon wall, took a photo and videotaped his last goodbyes to his family. He did not expect to survive the night. After waking at dawn the following day (Thursday, May 1) he had an epiphany that he could break his radius and ulna bones using torque against his trapped arm. He did so, then performed the amputation, which took about one hour with his multi-tool, which included a dull two-inch knife. The knife, which he had used to carve his makeshift tombstone into the canyon wall the previous day, had become extremely dull. After freeing himself, Ralston still had to get back to his truck. He climbed out of the slot canyon in which he had been trapped, rappelled down a 65-foot (20 m) sheer wall one-handed, then hiked out of the canyon in the hot midday sun. He was 8 miles (13 km) from his vehicle, and had no phone. However, while hiking out of the canyon, he encountered a family on vacation from the Netherlands, Eric and Monique Meijer and their son Andy, who gave him Oreos and water and then hurried to alert the authorities. Ralston had feared he would bleed to death; he lost 40 pounds (18 kg), including 25% of his blood volume. The rescuers searching for Ralston, alerted by his family that he was missing, had narrowed the search down to Canyonlands and flew by in their helicopter. He was rescued three hours after amputating his arm.
He survives today, still taking outdoor expeditions and climbing adventures.
Someone should give her a medal. Imagine a youth of the day surviving through such a trial. They can't go 11 minutes without checking their iphones. 11 hours without a text sends them into a spiral of despair. If someone teases them, they end it all. We've created a path of pathetic frailness and lack of character. Mankind won't thanks us for it.
Explorers: In 1971 at the young age of 17, when Koepcke survived a horrific plane crash that killed her mother and everyone else on board she was ready for the challenge. She survived a 10,000-foot fall while still strapped to her seat and she landed in the Peruvian jungle all alone. Using the skills taught to her by her parents, being the daughter of adventuring scientist. Koepcke was able to survive 11 days in the jungle swimimg and walking through the heart of the Amazon until she finally found civilization.
In September of 2013, at the age of 58, Koepcke (who became a biologist like her parents) recounted her chilling experience to The Daily Mail.

Louis Zamperini died for the second time on July 2, 2014.
He had been announced 'Killed in Action' by the US Govt. when his B-24 aircraft crashed into the sea and no survivors were found.

Life as an Olympian
Zamperini was born to Italian immigrants. While growing up, he set up a record for the school track team and eventually booked a place for himself in the United States Team that went to the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
Zamperini finished eighth in his race, but his last sprint got attention of one guy. His name was Adolf Hitler.
He went on to have a personal moment with Hitler and even shook hands with him.
Zamperini gets himself enlisted in the United States Army Air Force and is stationed in the Pacific as a bombardier (responsible for targeting aerial bombs) on a B 24 Liberator Aircraft.
Their crew flew well over 20 successful missions. They were targeted by enemy fire on multiple times but managed to survive. Ironically, their B24 was nicknamed 'Super Man'.
After one such mission, their plane was badly damaged and the crew was asked to conduct a search and rescue mission for another of their aircraft which went missing.
This is how they got into - "The Green Hornet". While looking for the missing aircraft, far into the sea, mechanical failures hit 'The Green Hornet' and they crash into the sea.
The Ordeal Begins
Of the eleven crew members on board the aircraft, only three of them survive the crash.
Zamperini, along with his two crew mates, start drifting along in the life raft.
Little did they know, how long would their journey at sea would last.
As days passed by, drifting along with no signs of human life, the trio started facing several problems.
The Fight for Survival
- They start getting delusional : In simple words, they become crazy. They start seeing things on water. They imagine about their favorite dishes and seeing them in water and try to reach out to them.
- Lack of Water : The irony of the sea is that, there is water everywhere but not a drop to drink. The more sea water you drink, the salt in it makes you dehydrated.
- Lack of Food : The emergency rations get over in a few days. One of the crewmen, out of jealousy eats up an entire bar of chocolate on his own. Ironically, this crewman dies, after 33 days in sea.
- Shark Attack : The ordeal was not getting easier any day. They were beginning to get attacked by sharks. Imagine being in a life raft, with almost no equipment, no other human beings in sight, sea on all sides and blood thirsty sharks underneath.
- Japanese Bombers - A few times, Japanese Zero aircraft spotted them and they were strafed and sprayed with bullets.
This goes on for 46 long days. At sea, alone, for this long, Zamperini and his surviving crew member lost track of time.
They survive for these many days on rain water, raw fish and albatross bird. They got used to eating raw meat.
On their 47th day, after drifting thousand of miles from their initial crash location, they reach Marshall Island, only to get captured by the Japanese forces.
Louis Zamperini was no ordinary prisoner of war. He was an Olympian. He was a celebrity. He had shaken hands with Hitler. Little did he know that, his achievements would encourage his captors to taunt him and torture him.
One of the ordeals that Zamperini went through, was when his hands were tied behind his back. Then he was suspended from a high pole with his tied hands supporting the weight of his entire body. The entire weight is on your shoulders for hours and the pain is incredulous. This was a practice at Auschwitz too.
He was tortured the most by Mutshuhiro Watanabe. Once he made Zamperini hold a heavy wooden log over his head for over 37 minutes, at the end of which Watanabe punched him in the stomach.
Back home, there was no news about Zamperini and he was declared 'Killed in Action', and there was a funeral held for him.
Eventually, after the war ended and the Japanese surrender, Zamperini came back home to a hero's welcome.
The Life Thereafter
Zamperini, with the kind of ordeal went through, spent most of his life as a motivational speaker. In 1998, he visited Japan to carry the Winter Olympics torch. His torturer, Matshuhiro Watanabe, survived the war and went into hiding. He came back to normal life only when the prosecution of war time criminals had stopped. While in Japan, Zamperini forgave Matshuhiro and tried to meet him but was declined this request by Matshuhiro himself.
May his soul rest in peace and may his legacy live forever.

Explorers: While some of us think about it every day and constantly think of ways to ‘cheat death’ in a Final Destination-style manner. Either way, death is eventually unavoidable; but some people have found ways to put off the inevitable by surviving in the face of extraordinarily trying and even seemingly hopeless circumstances. We may never know why one person survives a fall that would’ve killed others it’s a bit of a mystery, and if you’re religious it could be proof that there’s a higher power at work. Or it could be that these people just got extremely lucky.
These brave souls faced it head on and lived to tell the tale.

Explorers: In October 1972, a Uruguayan plane carrying 45 people including rugby players and students crashed in the Andes Mountains. The temperature was 30 degrees below zero at night time and 12 people had died in the initial crash. The survivors had very little in terms of food and water and eventually had to turn to cannibalism(Dead bodies) in order to stay alive. The survivors lost almost all hope when they heard on the plane’s radio that the search for their plane had ended. A number of survivors, however, banded together to form an expedition party which would search for help. After a number of failed attempts to cross the treacherous terrain and 72 days of being stranded, the group who had left the crash site had managed to make themselves known to civilians and the 16 survivors were eventually found. The ordeal still haunts the remaining survivors over 40 years later.
I had this book threw it away cause it gave me nightmares. And the irony of it all was that not very far away from their crash site was a store house filled with food and communication gears that can take them out of the situation but they never saw it. The gods must be having fun watching them to see how they will survive.

In one episode, a helicopter flying over an active volcano developed fault just on top of the volcano and fell inside the larva. Its was like falling inside hell. How they survived is astonishing.
In another episode, an airplane with over 200 passengers crashed in a desne forest and many died instantly, but not all. After one month of looking for them by their government, the search and rescue operation was suspended, not knowing some of the passengers survived. They were declared dead and forgotten.
I think they lived in the forest for about 3 months, lost in the middle of nowhere searching for a way out. Things got so bad for them they had to resort to eating the flesh of fellow dead passengers on the way just to survive. Many died on the way, just about 7 or so of them made it out of the forest alive. One survivor already had his wife married to another man by the time he got home.
