He is the most senior Justice of the Supreme Court and billed to succeed Justice Mahmood Muhammed this November. They however want to take him out of the equation so that Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad can succeed. The "establisment" does not want to reliquish their 29 year hold on the Judiciary.

Hon. Justice Onnoghen J.S.C will be the first Southerner since 1987 come November to be the Chief Justice of the Federation!
