The tomb is being restored, giving researchers unprecedented access.

Researchers have uncovered the original surface of what is traditionally considered the tomb of Jesus Christ in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.

The tomb's surface had been covered by a thick layer of marble, according to an exclusive by National Geographic. This has now been removed to reveal the tomb for the first time since at least 1555 CE, and possibly much earlier.



"The marble covering of the tomb has been pulled back, and we were surprised by the amount of fill material beneath it," said Fredrik Hiebert, archaeologist-in-residence at the National Geographic Society working at the site. "It will be a long scientific analysis, but we will finally be able to see the original rock surface on which, according to tradition, the body of Christ was laid."

The shelf on which the body of Christ is said to have rested after his crucifixion is now protected by a structure called an Edicule. This covering is being restored by a team of scientists directed by Antonia Moropoulou of the National Technical University of Athens, a specialist in building materials and the preservation of monuments.

"We are at the critical moment for rehabilitating the Edicule," Moropoulou said. "The techniques we're using to document this unique monument will enable the world to study our findings as if they themselves were in the tomb of Christ."



Access to the tomb may also help researchers learn about what prompted Helena, the mother of the Roman emperor Constantine, to identify the site as Christ's tomb.

The restoration of the tomb is due to be completed in the spring of 2017. The total costs of the project will run to more than $4 million (£3.3m). Donations to fund the restoration include a multi-million-dollar sum from King Abdullah II of Jordan.

Six Christian sects have custody over the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and the restorations required the consent of all of them before going ahead. They include the Greek Orthodox Church, the Roman Catholic Church and the Armenian Orthodox Church.

For more than 300 years Christians happily visited the empty tomb on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, we know this from the writings of the Christian historian Eusebius;

“Believers in Jesus all congregate from all parts of the world....that they may worship at the Mount of Olives opposite the city....to the cave that is shown there.” (Eusebius, Proof of the Gospel, Bk. VI. ch. 18).

In addition, from the Gospel writer Luke we know that Calvary was located on the Mount of Olives overlooking Jerusalem (Luke 23:33) and the empty tomb was nearby.

However, in the year 326, Constantine sent his mother Helena to Jerusalem to discover the spot that he had foreseen as the place of Jesus' Resurrection. Constantine's mother "discovered" the site upon finding three crosses that had supposedly not deteriorated after more than three hundred years.

It turned out this was the site of the temple of Venus on the western side of Jerusalem. Constantine ordered the temple torn down and a church constructed on the site. This is called the church of the "Holy" Sepulchre to this day. Curiously we know that when the Romans finally conquered Jerusalem in 135 A.D., as an insult to the Jews, they built a Temple of Venus over a monument to the Jewish freedom fighter named John Hyrcanus.

This "gloomy shrine of lifeless idols", according to Eusebius was the site which Constantine later chose to build his Church of the "Holy" Sepulchre: (Life of Constantine, chapter 26).

The fact that Jesus once existed, and that he died and rose from the dead is the reason for my belief in God.

A verse in 1cor tells us that if christ hadn't risen from the dead, that all our faith is totally in vain and it is a nonsensical stupidity.

No matter, how they try to deny it, atheism is just too weak to harm christianity.

Imagine, atheism has been ever since, yet can only have only slightly about 2% of the world, but check christianity that started just 2000yrs ago it is the greatest.

History and proof of history has always been available to the inquisitive and not the closeminded. Do you know why even the scientific community believe Jesus existed? its because history gave them proof.

Please do, because I never ever ever said Jesus didn't exist. I did however imply that if Jesus did exist his miracles(water to wine, walking on water) were not real and are purely fiction. There are even historical errors in The bible.

What historical errors? If your mother got your birth date wrong does that stop you from existing?

For there to be a birthdate that means something or someone was born on that date or around that time...If 200 people give slightly different accounts of a miraculous event doee that negate the occurrence of an actual miracle? it simply means a miracle did occur but from 200 different views...all admit a miraculous event but slightly vary with details.

So again I ask you if your date of birth was wrongly worded on your birth certificate does that mean you were not born?
