Nigeria isn't the only country in the world in which oil is explored why is there so much spillage when global best practice is applied all round the world?

Flaring still goes on even in Texas so why do we make it appear as if there's a curse in the land that is unique?

The problem of the Niger Delta is the Niger Deltan sorry to say.

Niger delta have it's own problem but that doesn't mean the FG and multinationals doesn't have their own blame. Just recently I was going through NEITI report on crude and gas sold. We aren't talking about millions of dollars but billions of dollars. Does it reflect in the lives of these people? Today North is mining their solid minerals without FG having revenue much from it. Take a look at the PIB at the Senate house, 8yrs it have been lying dormant. Why was it not pass? The clause is because host communities would have 10% stake with the companies. The Northern senators pend it down. We know the solution to these problems , oil exploitation didn't start yesterday. Ken Saro wiwa saw these coming but the government nip him at the bud. Before violent agitation started there was peaceful agitation. The only language the government understand is wanton destruction. Why is it so? Before oil we were living fine, we had rubber plantations and oil palm. Government have not come up with a plan on how to develop these communities speedily if it even means stopping the derivation directly to governor's. The Niger delta needs development and not fighter jets nor military.

To be sincere our main issue/Problem is not oil exploration but Managing what we have on ground.
If the corruption is existingonly few idiots lootters will enjoy the Oil.
If there is transparency what we have on ground is OK for us to enjoy successful life.
Gawan,
Shagari,
Babangida,
Obasanjo
Jonathan,
Abdussalam,
Atiku.
Each of them can sponsor the entire members of #Nairaland with what he has on ground right now at the time of recession.
They really cheated our country and Only Allah can judge them.

My friend, please say what you know ooh! No Nigerian in the 70s, 80s and 90s had money to even bid for an oil bloc not to talk of developing it! What happened was that the Nigerian government especially under the military handed out these blocks as either OMLs or OPLs. The beneficiaries in turn shopped abroad for investors/ developers who they would then lease the block to based on projections or forecast of Crude Oil and gas deposits in the field/ block. Some blocks are onshore others are offshore while some are referred to as marginal fields. Marginal fields are mostly onshore or riverine and are located mostly in Akwa Ibom State. The lease agreements are mostly for 25 to 50 years and the monetary aspect runs into millions of US Dollars. In some cases as low as 50 million and in others as high as 750 million US Dollars! This is how some privileged and well connected Nigerians like TY Danjuma, Alakija, Arthur Eze and many others too numerous to mention became super rich at the expense of millions of ordinary Nigerians! So you see why most youths don't value hard work again? Where the mistress to a Military Head of State suddenly becomes super wealthy to the extent of emerging Africa's richest woman! Being a former Chief of Army Staff makes you a super rich guy to the extent you become one of the richest people and most powerful people in the country. So you see, Nigeria is on a long thing. The advent of Oil has really been more of a curse than a blessing to us because Oil money is somewhat easy to loot by those in public office. If not for Oil, Nigeria would have been a great nation. The ingenuity of our populace would have been brought to the fore cos necessity is the mother of invention!
Bro most of those oil well are not producing Google is ur friend

Now the question is why dose it matter who owns the oil block

Just my view... in this century there is and always will be glut in the oil market. Technology has made it possible to now extract oil that was not possible in the last century... the US ...which was the biggest buyer is now trying to sell oil. Doesn't mean oil is no longer important... it is not that important. My take on the rush to extract oil in the North is part of a bigger plan... the plan to set the North up with all it requires to be a self sufficient country, then secede and leave 'Nigeria' saddled with the debt.... the reason also why the $30 b loan is sought after without explanation. So looking at the big picture... this makes sense to me... why settle secede and have to depend on 'Nigeria' for oil?

Discovery of oil in the north is Paramount to our peace in Nigeria. It is understandable that most of the problems we have today with regards security in the ND is as a result of concentration of oil in that region. Not forgetting the non-transparency of our passed military leaders in allocation of the oil blocks, we must also be factual. To tell you the truth the Non-native owners of the oil blocks in the ss would not just leave their investments because some group of people are agitating for ' their own share". If there is oil everywhere no one would be held ransom. The NDA should be agitating for specific development of the area. When I say specific I mean demands that are time specific, realistic and achievable for the benefit of the region. Mend did this initially and it yielded results.
I remember when mend would demand for things like, employment of their youths with specific number or percentage stated, cleaning up of the polluted land, training for the youths etc. Although the "the settlement of the boys" became counterproductive, things like this are genuine demands. But to say " leave my land " is the biggest joke and an attempt to bite more than one can chew.

Guy you guys should stop dreaming of a Niger Delta Republic ok. Your dream land would just end up like South Sudan where war has become the order of the day! No country survives without at least one majority tribe or group calling the shots and also holding the safety valves of the nation state in check! More over, the south south is too disunited to become a sovereign state. Secondly, even if you guys want to alienate the Igbos out of hate and greed, the Igbo nation (Biafra) must have access to the Sea whether you people like it or not! Port Harcourt and huge Chunk of Rivers State including Bonny Island and Opobo have Igbo ancestry and anthropological descent/ links. So the Igbos are taking those lands including Port Harcourt Metropolis, Onne and Okrika. In fact, the whole Ikwerre Land and much more! So it's better you guys work hands in gloves with us to achieve a solid Biafran nation state instead of a partitioned Biafra because in the long term, a war will break out btw the two Biafras!

But please you guys should not even dream of taking any inch of Igbo land; PH, Asaba, Ikwerre land, Opobo, Bonny Island, Agbor, Kwale etc. We Igbos have the ruggedity to conquer you guys on the Battlefield any day any time as far as we are well armed. So BE WARNED!

Biafra has not been achieved and you are already boasting of conquering other lands. You even boast that PH, Onne and Okrika belongs to you guys ? But do you think the average Ikwere or Asaban claim to be Igbo ? Just take a census yourself and you'll find out.
No one hates Igbos. I don't know where some of you got such paranoia from. The problem that will arise in Biafra is that some people like you will begin to have such destructive ambition that will at the end destroy everything. You are already planning of how to make Bonny Island, Opobo etc yours. I have no problem with Igbos but you have to check your selfishness.

This is a GRAND plan for a master stroke on the Nigerian entity in time to come. The Northern Oligarchy had it all planned out and baited the contraption 'Nigeria' till power got back to them.

Before then rest will realise they've been in dream land all these while, the North will be far gone as it's own independent country.

Let this comment be a reminder to that effect.

This the comment of someone who doesn't know a thing of how the oil industry works.. .

What difference dose if make if all the oil wells are owned by a northerner? ?

Ijaws are here and Buhari and our minster of petroleum is running all over the world looking for people to come and develop oil blocks and u are here saying trash

It takes over a billion dollars to get an oil block to become operational and if you have this cash and rady to invest am sure government will rush and give u oil blocks as much as u want

Even 80% of Nigerians owned oil blocks are not operational or operating far below capacities

Learn u guys will refuse

The federal government should stop giving out oil blocks to cronies as gifts. Especially when they don't have the means to make it fully functional.
The colored section of quoted text is rarely used as criteria, rather it is given to friends and allies. Case in point is allocation of oil well to Alakija.
