I dont know why Nigerians are always very quick to condemn our "traditional ways" but are very willing to swallow "foreign" ways hook, line and sinker......

I ll wait for the day u do this to your baby all in the name of tradition.
And u think u can?

Think about these pictures. Our culture is not bad and you people of today cannot demonise our culture. Tribal marks are for beauty and identity. This has now become outdated. However, being outdated does not translate to being devilish. I hate tribal marks because they now look horrible but that does not make tribal marks invention of the devil. You hate African tribal marks but your love the whiteman's tattoo, then you need to be cured of inferiority complex.

Did they just use this to swear that the kid will never move away from his community..What if he decide to travel abroad to reside....did they ever thought of that while doing this....He will keep explaining himself anywhere he went....what sort of problem is this?

Pray tell, darling, what is wrong with explaining himself anywhere he went ( if you meant foreign lands by that)? Imagine a tall, slim, dark beauty with tribal marks on her face on the streets of Aberdeen, or Madrid, or Dubai, or New York....all confident and earning money, and dating, and dining, and living, explaining to people, "oh this is who I am" in a quiet, non- earnest, not-trying-to-convince-anyone and assured manner. I do not see her talking plenty about tithes lipsrsealed and weaves and bleaching...in fact, she has her natural hair cool. I am now drooling over this girl, I love her, even though I am straight cheesy. Okay, if male, I love him too...with his ankara top over jeans. (They both dress in contemporary Africa inspired attires to be full crushes of mine shaa)...I will stop now!!!

@ topic. i think it is only Yorubas who should decide what to do with this customary practice that I find hard to believe was created with the intent to disfigure people. Careful ethnographic studies would reveal the whys and hows of it, and the people involved would know this more than we ever would, and can bring about a change that is acceptable to them and geared in a positive direction. Eg, elimination or substitution or making it volitional on attainment of adulthood maybe? Done the last way, I actually would admire anyone who would mark themsekves like that....they can actually be beautiful (in a different way)....and seeing an adult who gets this done would tell me two things- that they have a unique sense of self expression/identity, and that pain is something they can handle (I shrink at the mere thought of a needle prick). It is of importance that changing this practice if from a contextual, traditional understanding and not cos it does not look like what Kim Kardashian would approve of undecided. That way, it becomes embodied and true to Yorubas, others as a social construct.

It is very ethnocentric to jump in and curse and condemn the people who do this. ( even as I admit that I want to take that child far faaar away from all that, but I say this as an outsider.....I would not know why that face would be scarred but the mother who carried and birthed her had her reasons. I would very much like to understand why)
It would take me a loong time to explain this cos I find it hard to articulate my points...but, this does not mean I am wrong about it. I am ready to lay out my points though, should they be needed. In summary, we should be culturally relative.

I always figure that anthropology, history, global politics are (arguably) the most important and relevant courses and pathways for /to African self development and determination.
