Know Your Worth by Nomfanelo99(f): 11:48am On Nov 18, 2016
It was on a day like this- with a brief fall of
precipitation. When I was approached by a fine
young man while I was shopping for vegetables
from the market on my way to the taxi rank. I prefer a
day like this for vegetable shopping. It gets busy
and overcrowded on a hot day.
I had a bag around my right shoulder, plastic
bags on both my hands, stuffed and heavy with
fresh vegetables from the street market tables.
This man- well, for a moment, afar I thought he
was. He greeted me "Sawbona sis wami, unjani?"
While I was trying to respond to the greeting I
was pleasently interupted by the air that
sweeped the scent of his perfume from where he
stood right to my face, leaving me with goose-
bumps and a motivation to respond immediately
with a polite, low-toned "I'm okay and how are you ?" accompanied with a smile. Silly I know,
but after that I also noticed how white his teeth
were and how extremely clean he was. He had
dressed well for the weather and looked as if he
had been in an office all day. Exceptionally neat!
I was willing to engage in a conversation with
this man. I mean, why not? I was smitten!
And so we did, we conversed as we walked
together to the taxi rank with giggles in the
midst. It was a good conversation, for a 10
minutes walk to the rank that I would normally
take alone with disturbing thoughts in my head
and a list of deadlines depriving me of my liesure
time. Hmm...And I was thinking I would find
someone like this somewhere around Gateway,
this was the least expected setting. Before I
knew it, the walk was over. I had to get inside
the taxi that would take me back to my normal
life.
As I stopped to say goodbye I realized I was still
carrying the heavy plastic bags with vegetables
in both of my hands and I was huffing and
puffing as well. I was tired, my other hand was
burning too, one bag was heavier than the other
and it virtually cut through my skin. He then
asked for my cellphone number, "So we can
meet again and get to know each other more,
you are beautiful, full of life and I would like to
have a woman like you in my own life," he said.
This time I was reluctant to smile, in my head I
was worried. There was something wrong with
this man. If I even consider giving him my
cellphone number it would be the end of my
happiness.
My friend, I refused to give him my number. I
couldn't hide the truth from him, I wanted him to
understand my frustration and worry. So that one
day he would never do it to another woman, in
any kind of way. I told him I would not give him
my number because he had failed to help me
with the vegetable bags I was carrying on our
way to the taxi rank. I wouldn't want to give my
number to a man of such character. I give my
number to gentlemen who know and understand
the worth of a woman. He giggled for seconds,
he probably thought I was joking. I then smiled,
"Goodbye!" I said as I grabbed the vegetable
bags from the ground and made my way to the
taxi.
It can never be the scent, nor the sense of style,
the excent or words you utter. You can approah
me looking like Kanye West jumping off his
private jet but If you cannot realize that I have a
burden and lend a helping hand like a normal
human being whose hands are empty and free
then I refuse to start any form of relationship
with you. I interact with human beings not
something in between.
You couldn't help me with my vegetable bags, a
simple thing such as that and you want me to
give you my cellphone number? Why because you
are good looking and you smell good? Really? I
wont enter that pit hole with both of my eyes
open.

but in this case it had nothing to do with him being a gentleman. what happened to humanity ? he didn't have to open doors for me or anything. All he had to do was offer to carry one bag
