All those figure u sampled are still too small for us. Imagine SA having 12 times our capacity and yet we claim we are the biggest in Africa.
Let us bring back industrial estates and allow off-grid arrangement to cater for them if we must make progress because to me our National grid isn't workable. Both GEJ and Buhari have failed woefully in terms of Power. Why don't Nigerians have prepaid meters today? Why are we still estimating billing?
Imagine about a month ago, an EDC official went to disconnect a compound with prepaid meter in my area. How can any competent PHCN person not know that prepaid meter cuts off the user when their credit finishes?
Lolz at the EDC incident, Industrial hubs are allowed to power their industries off grid. The major problem facing our power sector now is the EDC and the boys in the creek (the recent system collapse is do to the loss of 800MW as a result of an attack on single gas pipeline) as this government has made sizeable progress in driving available capacity from 4,800MW to 7,100MW mainly by fixing turbines that have been out of operation for years and some has been out of operation for decades at a time we where experiencing finance constraints. Remember that this government have not spent up to $2b on power and were able to add over 2,000MW to our available capacity, add over 000MW to our installed capacity, upgrade our Transmission capacity to 7,000MW from 5,000MW and compared this to the PDP administration which spent $16b in 16 years and could not make any meaningful success.
Our national demand forecast is 19,000MW and we currently have 11,000MW installed capacity and don't forget that we have some ongoing power projects that can add additional 1,500MW when completed (zungeru, Kaduna, Benin and so on)

An attack on a single gas pipeline lead to sudden loss of 800MW which resulted to a system collapse but worry no more as the power generation has picked up back.

That was why I warned that Fashola should stop celebrating increased generation capacity in the media because anytime he does so enemies of Nigerian electricity immediately blow up a vital pipeline

These evil people are so determined, once there is an increase, they will blow up pipeline. Theis the reason why i am not excited about the recent naira gains, those guys will be thinking of ways to reduce crude oil output so we are back to square one

The reason u don't experience improve power supply whenever power generation increases is because Disco can't collect higher bills from what they are currently collecting in your area whether they increase power output to Ur area or not whenever power generation increases, instead of increasing the amount of energy sent to Ur area they will rather sale to where they know increase in power supply will lead to increase in bills collection.
In other words, they overcharge those who pay to compensate for those who don't and this would lead to hoarding of prepaid meters that they know can put a stop their scam.

The fact athat our national grid can be taken down by few miscreants show that our national grid is not robust enough. On a good day it should be able to withstand few transmission line vandalism.

Some brains have refused to accept that Nigeria is going into extinction. If it is now cheaper to relocate production plant to China, produce and import into Nigeria, and you still believe that this government is doing well. Then you need awareness.

Not sure of most of the things you've written here, but it sounds very promising. But just to add to your comment, $24 billion was actually spent in 16 years not $16bn cos an additional $8billion+ was spent by GEJ on the same power and we barely added up to 3000mw in 16 years.

Well I dont want to assume but I guess you are saying the previous govts should take the glory for these projects or nothing is actually being done by the present govt.

I believe many of these projects were actually awarded by previous govts but either abandoned or monies were not released for the take off. So the present govt see that the projects are completed.

Ameachi for example abandoned the light rail in PH if Gov Wike finishes it... pls who will you praise for the project?
Now Wike has totally abandoned the light rail project.

Mambilla hydro was conceived in 1980s but nothing has been done about it. If this administration complete Mambilla. Do we give glory to the 1980 govts?
Besides govt is a continuum.

Improved Transmission Capacity

All of this transmission projects are abandoned projects, the least abandoned once among them were abandoned 3 years before the inception of this current government at different levels of completion from zero percent completion to 90 percent level of completion.

Fashola was quoted in late 2016 - "Following the privatization in 2013, the ministry is now largely a policymaker, and regulator through NERC [Nigerian electricity regulatory commission] and is now only directly responsible for expansion and maintenance of the transmission line through (TCN) and completion of projects started before the privatization which were uncompleted and about which I will share a few details.
The story in power is not different from that of works in terms of uncompleted projects in transmission.
As I said in my meeting briefly, we inherited over 100 transmission projects for which contractors were not paid for about three years.
This not only resulted in stoppage of work, laying off of workers, but left projects uncompleted.
But it also resulted in contractors abandoning over 800 containers, which contained transformers, switches, panels and other equipment needed as materials to complete transmission projects because they could not pay for them.
To compound the situation there was no provision in the budget of 2015 to pay them as only N5 Billion was budgeted for the Ministry of Power.
All this has changed. The ministry has N24 Billion for 2016 and has started paying contractors and getting the necessary approvals for them to return to work.
Examples of these are in Sokoto, Maiduguri, Okada, Alagbon, Damboa, Nasarawa, Gurara, Osogbo, Kashimbilla, Kumbotso, Ikot Ikpene".
The completion of IkotEkpene switch yard and transmission line is the major of all these projects which lead to evacuation of stranded power generation capacity of 700-1000MW in the Eastern part of Niger delta from four power plants: Ibom Power, Clabar Power, Alaoji Power, and Afam Power through to Ugwuaji in Enugu and then Makurdi up to Jos.

Fashola "This puts a lie to the narrative that the transmission grid is static at 5000 MW and is not expanding because these projects add to the capacity" .

Furthermore, with the budget we have started paying the shipping companies and warehouse owners who kept custody of the containers, and the report I received last week indicates that a first batch of about 400 containers will be released to contractors to go out and do their work.
In addition to transmission, we are working to complete uncompleted power generation projects to deliver on the incremental power program of our roadmap of incremental, steady and uninterrupted power.
Some of the projects that should start coming to conclusion in 2017 are the 215 MW Kaduna Power, 40 MW Kashimbilla Power (Hydro), 40 MW Gurara I Power (Hydro), 29 MW Dadin Kowa Power (Hydro), 10 MW Katsina Power (Wind) 1,125 MW (14 Solar projects) and the 240 MW Emergency Power Project for Afam (Gas).

And the expected completion of this transmission projects
Shagamu , Ikeja West, Ajah, Ayobo, Omotosho , Ayede and Ogba, which it said would be completed between April and the end of this year and the planned upgrading of some of the existing transmission capacity is expected to drive our transmission capacity close to 10,000 MW

Fixed Turbines

We are working with the generation companies to increase their power generation capacity through repairs and maintenance.

Egbin has restored all its turbines even though it has suffered a gas outage as a result of vandalization (It has 400MW available capacity when this government took over but now has 1,350MW available capacity, Its full capacity although they have been embarking on partial maintenance before this government took over on few out of their non functional turbines and can't operate any of their functional turbines at full capacity before, due to some technical problems )

Kainji, Jebba and Shiroro have increased the number of functional turbines ( can't say much about Kainji and Jebba dams because the more they fix their turbines the more they collapse but now generate more power than they do two years ago. before, Shiroro was operating 2 out of its 4 turbines with capacity of 150MW per turbine with 300MW available capacity but now have all its 4 turbines functional with 600MW available capacity after the maintenance of its 2 non functioning turbines. NSPC have to bring in expert from abroad to fix one of these damaged turbines at a cost of $8.5m. " Executive Vice Chairman of North South Power Company Limited (The concessionnaire company), Mr. Olubunmi Peters, described the successful repair on the damage turbine as an engineering feat because the damage to the turbine occurred about 60 metres under zero visibility water and was therefore difficult to access for repair, adding that there were concerns about the possibility of further catastrophic failure to the entire dam"

Egbin Power Plant Adds 1,000MW To National Grid
BY NSE ANTHONY-UKO
— Sep 29, 2015

The Egbin Power Plc, Nigeria’s largest generation plant, is now generating above 1,000mw consistently into the national grid, chairman of the company, Mr Kola Adesina, has revealed.
Giving an update on the activities of the company in Lagos recently, Adesina noted that “this is the first time since inception of the power plant that it will achieve the feat because of the continuing investment and upgrade activities on the plant by the new investors – Sahara Power Group and Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO).”
He recalled that eight years ago, the plant hit the 1,000mw mark for barely two hours and never attained it again until now; and that prior to the privatisation and handover of the plant in November 2013, Egbin averaged generation of below 500mw due to the dismal state of its six units which, at its lowest point, had only two of the six units operational.
The chairman said that prior to the privatisation of the plant in November 2013, most of the auxiliaries, like the demineralization plant, were not functional, and spare parts necessary for plant operation and preventive maintenance were unavailable, while most of the equipment was obsolete.
According to him, since takeover, the new owners have embarked on total overhaul of units 4, 5 and 1, allowing the units to peak at 220mw each – which is the installed capacity, adding that the plant “had never undergone any major overhaul in its 30 years of operation.”
Adesina said Unit 6 of the plant, which has been un-operational for 10 years, had been successfully restored while Turbine Vibration Monitoring Systems, which assist in regulating the speed of the turbine in the event of vibration to avoid a catastrophic failure, had been replaced.
According to him, with the successful restoration of unit 6 and the overhauling of the units halfway complete, there was an increase of 50 per cent in generation and a drastic decrease in unscheduled shut-downs.
On the medium term investment plans, the chairman said the major overhaul of Units 2, 3 & 6 in 2016 would complete the scheduled overhaul plan until the next one in 2019.

While noting that the feat signposts the unfolding success of the privatisation process and power sector reform in Nigeria, Adesina attributed the achievement partly to the direct intervention of the federal government in its determination to resolve the power crisis which has resulted in recent improvements in gas supply.
“This is driving the increase in power supply in the nation, boosting socio-economic development. Prior to this, we had invested heavily and had the plant ready to generate power at full capacity but there was no gas to do so. This is indeed a good development for the power sector in Nigeria,” he said.
Commending the federal government for recent interventions in the gas situation that had impacted power generation positively, the company’s chairman called for more dynamic policies and incentives for sustainable gas supply across the nation.

He pledged that the company would sustain its continuing capital investments and robust human capital development initiatives which include exchange programmes and training courses for all cadres of staff.
Also speaking on the achievement, the company’s chief executive officer, Dallas Peavey, said the transformation in Egbin commenced following its acquisition by Kepco Energy Resource Ltd (KERL) in collaboration with its technical partners, Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO).
“Through the injection of close to N50 billion in new capital into Egbin post privatisation, the Sahara Power/KEPCO partnership has brought to the power plant an unprecedented level of innovativeness, professionalism, human capital development and continuing investment in new technology. The control room panels, installed at the plant’s inception, have been removed and upgraded to state of the art digital panels. The highlight of the main plant rehabilitation occurred in the first quarter of 2015 when the company successfully rehabilitated ST Unit 6, bringing an additional 220mw to the national grid and restoring the power plant to its installed capacity of 1,320mw,” he said.
Peavey noted that upon taking over the plant, the new management brought in a new lease of life to all the stakeholders in Egbin with a clear roadmap for consistent retooling and repositioning of the company to conform to the latest technology and ensure optimal performance.
He said, “In 2014, 107 young Nigerian graduate engineers were recruited into our Graduate Engineering Programme (GEP), a fast-track manpower and developmental programme for high potential individuals. In the true spirit of national development, the engineers were sent to the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN) for a year’s training under the Graduate Skills Development Programme.
“With these developments, Egbin is now equipped to generate power at its installed 1,320mw capacity and we remain committed to sustaining the performance of the plant as we prepare to explore the prospects of expansion for enhanced power generation. We are already envisioning a future of 2,670mw in a few years’ time and even go beyond to 10,000mw in the next decade, if gas supply, transmission expansion and demand permit.”
