excanny: You should have first of all dried the seed for like 8-10 days. Get a paint bucket, fill it with good soil. Then pour the dried tomato seeds on the soil, don't bury the seeds too deep, just sprinkle some soils on them. Add little water every 2 days. Then after 2 weeks they would have sprouted well, then you can now transplant into earth or sack. Wish i could have snapped the seedlings my mom prepared (while i was in school) that i later planted in my garden. All of the seeds germinated. Though she bought the seeds but the one gotten from fresh tomato. (All na same process sha) 1 Like |

@excanny You just gave me a good laugh. On a serious note, I have come to realise tomatoes ain't that difficult to grow you know. Just give it its environment to grow, sit back and watch the plants do the wonders. On getting viable seeds to grow, hmmm... Well for me, I love buying seeds with labels so I am in the knowing of what I am growing and could easily look it up for further info. Buying seeds from mallams ain't bad but my reservations with such seeds are how viable they are! Where the fruits prematurely ripened? Diseases and transmission through contaminated seeds...etc 1 Like |

Been quite a while. So many things going on at the same time, can barely come in here to post updates. Nevertheless, I've got goodnews from most quarters; i.e goat farm, my hectare of land and my kitchen garden. I should be harvesting my first sets of cucumbers in coming days (though it was/is still a disaster). My fluted pumpkin pods should be good for sales this week, my bell-pepper and rodo pepper plants are already flowering... My tomato plants gave me excellent yields. Next plants to takeover already in the nursery. Pictures loading!!! 1 Like |

jidestroud: Nice one! I thought some rodents caused havoc on your farm, hence the long silence. We've missed your updates and inspirations, our agric mentor. How are your bracing up for the coming drought? |

Worst Backyard Farmer so far It has been quite a while I gave updates on my garden. Believe me, you don't want to know what's been happening . Situation beyond my control took me to the North East (Gombe precisely) and as a result, my garden totally unattended to. Not even once did the person I begged to help check things out visit the garden. The garden is in a total mess; outgrown weeds, ugu leaves everywhere, rotten tomatoes litter the ground, my cucumbers all burnt out etc. It's a total disaster. Hence, the title Worst Farmer should be given to me Nevertheless, I was able to harvest giant size ugu pods and my corn ain't doing half bad. The next couple of weeks will be dedicated to getting the garden back in shape and preparations for dry season farming. 1 Like

jidestroud:. @op, pls is it true that if u want to get an ugu pod u will not harvest the leaves. Pls if true or false i need ur reponse. Thanks |
Re: Starting Up My Vegetable Farm Garden From Scratch (ugwu, Tomato, Green-leaf) by jidestroud(m): 6:48am On Nov 08, 2018 |
Juliana7: Partially true and false. The pods I harvested are from ugu plants running into their second year now. I have had to cut and cut over and over again but stopped when I needed the pods. Nevertheless, cutting does affect seed pod production both in size and quantity produced per plants. So once you are set and ready to get seed pods from your ugu plants, you stop cutting, or you probably just cut your plants for about 2months before leaving it for pods. In summary, it all depends on the aspect of ugu farming you want to go into; either SEED PRODUCTION or LEAVE PRODUCTION. If you want seeds, you can as well leave it alone and let it grow wild. 1 Like |

jidestroud: Lol! you and cats. I am starting a mini ugwu farm in my yard this week.. I have cleared the land. What next? I'm getting the pods from a friend. I don't need to make heaps. right? do I just add the manure to the cleared land |
Re: Starting Up My Vegetable Farm Garden From Scratch (ugwu, Tomato, Green-leaf) by jidestroud(m): 10:26pm On Nov 27, 2018 |
toyclicks: Lol...so attached to cats, can't imagine staying in a house without them. On the ugu, you've got that right. After clearing add manure to the land (Not fresh manure bikonu). Water and planting can be done in week or two. 1 Like |

jidestroud:Hello, I have dried my ugwu seeds, am I going to remove that black peel on it?? Thanks, keep on the good work bro |
Re: Starting Up My Vegetable Farm Garden From Scratch (ugwu, Tomato, Green-leaf) by jidestroud(m): 1:55pm On Dec 06, 2018 |
ryusufu: No oooo. You don't remove the peel for no reason at all. You can even go ahead and plant depending on the status of your seeds i.e if the seeds are already germinating within the pods or opened up partially |

Please Mr Jidestroud, how many days or weeks or months does it take to start harvesting Green leaf. And also, how do you have to clear weed in the Green leaf farm because I believe the Green leaf will cover every space in the farm. Thanks in advance. |
Re: Starting Up My Vegetable Farm Garden From Scratch (ugwu, Tomato, Green-leaf) by jidestroud(m): 6:45pm On Dec 14, 2018 |
Idemujoseph: From my farming experience, it's usually between 4-5weeks. Note, harvesting is done with respect to growth rate i.e. harvesting the taller ones first. In controlling weeds, most times I subscribe to handpicking. Due to planting methods, the weeds are usually to that much, just some here and there. 1 Like |
