Years of experience and how long you have spent in an organization do not mean you are a senior if there are no proper grading structure in your company.

Grading shows who is next in line and if that doesnt exist then it means anyone can be promoted or demoted through a subjective selection process.

It is either your boss has spoken ill of you.
It is either your niche at the office is not a managerial one.
It could be his certificates or course of study or where he schooled.
It could be an oversight.

If I were you, what I would have done is to send a mail to the main boss just to call his attention to it but to also let him know you are ready to work with your junior.

Check www.HRtechnique.com for some insights on how to avoid these things and how to stay relevant in todays job market.

This has got me thinking deep thought of tendering my resignation letter due to this act. Our immediate boss is to go and attend to another branch and Our senior boss who is not operating from our branch said our immediate boss should hand over to a junior colleague of mine when am the most senior on ground in terms of number of years and cognate experience.

Many a time i look at recognition is not duly granted to those whom it is due, i don't know if i will call this office polities or something else. And why this has got me amazed is that this junior colleague of mine is not even close with our most senior boss who is not operating from our branch and they have not really talked one on one. i have at many occasions talked with him, he knows me one on one.

Something keeps going through my mind: Is it that my immediate boss has punctured my reputation before him that i am not aware? Or was it an oversight? i wish of tendering my resignation considering all the number of years i have served the coy. no reasonable recognition. Please advice

My advice,

You may think that your junior may not have any relationship with the big boss, don't ever think that people are terrible when it comes to keeping of secret,

I once worked in an organisation where staff older than the Md build stupid friendly slavery relationship by going to his house to divulge informations from staff about him just for promotion and favour.

Keep your cool, watch how things eventually pans out with time, since you have more years of cognate experience tea your junior I will advise when he is at an crossroad on a task ensure you make people aware you solve such problems

Take care!!!!

Why is nobody considering the fact that maybe this junior is more intelligent, efficient, diplomatic, has better leadership qualities etc than the OP and that has influenced the management decision. If the OP were to be in the junior's position, he wouldn't be complaining about this. Instead, he would call it 'testimony, favour, grace, etc'. My advice...get to know that junior more and find out what he has or what he's doing that you are not. It will improve you and things like this won't happen again. That's how to progress in life.

Sorry if I'm a little harsh...but right now at work I'm in that junior's position. smiley

Interesting story. But hey, do not think about tendering your resignation. That is a defeatist approach to dealing with the matter you just tabled. Bid your time. Understand what is going on first as I garner from your story that you don't have a clue.

This is a complex problem, I do not think your Boss will want the business to fail, maybe from his interaction with you he has found you wanting in leadership skills. It could also be a case of outright spite or maybe ur outgoing boss recommended your junior colleague for the position. Whatever the case maybe, you should start thinking of your life outside that establishment. You should go and discuss this problem with your boss. Let him know how his decision is affecting your morale and that of other workers

This is wonderful. A very similar scenario happened to me too. My boss was suspended by the MD and put me in charge (me being a junior staff and not next inline to be boss). There were lots of thing my boss knew and i dont. I didn't know how to even handle the situation at first. I went to my boss that was suspended indefinitely and seek advice. He advised and taught me everything i needed to know as if i was his child. I felt really moved. After some weeks that the whole scenario which caused him to be sacked was settled, the MD called and asked how i could have handled the issue at hand. That he actually put me in charge pending while they could get a competent hand to fill the position. I explained to him the role my suspended boss took, he was touched and un-suspended him. I got promoted after this grin

OP, dont take this as a war, but an opportunity. You might be scheduled for a promotion, and the junior staff is been evaluated for that position. Pending while you get promoted. Always put in your best, you never know who is watching.

Honestly, the thing to do is speak to your boss about it,, and ask why this was done. Maybe there is something you can do to improve your relationship with him or your work output.

You should not resign just because of bruised ego. You were not employed to be the oga at all times.

If you feel you are being eased-out, the logical thing to do is to build your own interests outside of the company and when that has reached maturity you can resign if you want.

This same thing happened to my father's friend 1990,in ministry of Auditor general in bendel state, his junior became his boss through using the influence of palace and he got very pissed, but my dad begged him not to resign but to carry on but he refused and started his auditing firm which never succeeded but shortly delta state was created after he resigned and all his fellow junior deltans were moved to asaba and they all became rich men nd women but this man is suffering today without a house, car or even pension. Same person that was trained in oversea on government grant. Learn how to eat up your pride and report to your new boss as you give your best. Time will tell later.

Interesting!...do overlook my tone and get the message. On first look... for you to be seriously considering resigning because of rumour shows that you are a person who makes rash decisions.... who is short sighted (what are you going to do after resigning to maintain income?)... and such a person is not good to have in a managerial/decision making position. You can sink the company. If I can detect this in this your short write up... can it be that management has seen this trait in you? Your years of service and being good at what you do wouldn't matter.
I guess the company is a large one.... my guy... forget looking for appreciation of service and loyalty to company as an employee. Corporations are concerned about one thing. ..profit... if tomorrow they find a man that can replace you at half your salary.. guess what? If the guy is promoted... he will have to depend on you and two things can happen.... he will pull you up the ladder...or.... if you are still pained... you can pull him down by your lack of performance. My advice.... do your job... whatever will be will be... square pegs in round holes in private companies do not last long.

Relax now, do you know if you are going to be transferred to another place with more responsibilities. How are you sure they are not trying to see if that guy can handle the responsibilities of that position given that you are more experienced and may be needed in another capacity. Did the pay of the junior staff increase, will you be reporting to him? If the pay increased, there may be a problem. If No, you are cool dude. At my former place of work, Junior employees are given the chance to appraise senior colleagues. What this means is that the junior colleague monitors the success, hardwork and progress of his senior.

My opinion on this issue: does your outgoing boss feel threatened by you?
A couple of years ago, I was transferred from Abuja to Port Harcourt branch of our group to head a department of another company. I had put in 7 years in the group as at the time of my redeployment, though at the head office, this transfer was my first stint in the manufacturing sector.
I met 4 guys at the department, each of whom were struggling to get the position from their previous boss, but he couldn't recommend any and requested the head office to send someone to lead them, hence my redeployment.
These guys never co-operated with me for one day, (the most experienced had worked in the group for 6 years). Within a month, I had requested for an extra hand (Udeme-a guy less than a year in the group) to join me. Udeme and I ran the department alone, (the rest of my colleagues just come to work sit all day, find faults in my works and reported to the head office) for 6 months.
After 6 months, I had to go on leave for 3 weeks, I handed over to Udeme, because I was more comfortable with him not to plot my downfall before I return.
As fate would have it, during my 3-week leave, there was a 'tsunami' at the office, one of them was fired, two redeployed and one demoted. Udeme had made a very serious mistake, which the others noticed, but because they wanted him (and ultimately me) to fail, they ignored the email, and the company lost some money.

If your boss' action is not because of his lack of confidence in you not to usurp his authority, then it may be a test of your loyalty. Work closely with the junior staff and help him to excel, your efforts won't go unnoticed. NEVER WORK AGAINST HIM.

I must say you need to work on your "ego" at OP. Many a time this people see what you can't see in yourself and judge you base on that. My question is does this affect your salary or you just felt it should be you not someone else? If you want to follow my candid advice I'll say support your new boss and humble yourself to him. What makes you think you are better than him is called ego and this might be the reason why your boss decide to play a mind game on you. Just support him and ask for grace to do so. Many a time those who runs fastest end up a spectator. Go at your own pace. Don't manipulate and when God picks you up no one can put you down. Don't let the "I have experience more than him"syndrome get into you. I know it won't be easy but many a time it pays to just keep following and watch God making you.

It is either you are one of those that relay every information to your boss just to gain favour thus ( in his mind decided to distrust you )

or tribal politics is at play.
