Hi everyone,
Awesome job you guys have been doing here.
I am an avid reader of nairaland albeit as a guest.
Don''t fancy some of the ethnic stuff that goes down here.
I need advise so I just created this account to ask it.
I got admission to an MBA program and just got my I-20 last week. I have fixed an emergency appointment for Monday as classes resume on the 28th.
A little background info now. I'm in my early forties and I work with a multinational in the food and nutrition sector. I currently am in IT but want to do an MBA so I can crossover into the business side of leadership in my organization. I have gotten a study leave from my organization(Have documentary evidence to back this up) and have the funds required to cover the entire duration of my programme (I own a couple of real estate and other business concerns which my wife manages). Apart from this I have two brothers who are citizens in the USA and I have visited a couple of times.
Will self sponsorship at my level mitigate against me? I will be staying with one of my brothers all through the programme as the University is about 10 minutes walk from his residence.
I just want to get a handle on what to expect from the interview so I can be prepared.
Will appreciate any feedback.
Thanks in ancticipation of your responses.
If you need any further clarification, please ask.
Thank you

Nice spoon feeding....loll....you try bro, God bless you for helping her out. She would sure get her visa next time.
iekene:

I would just drop this here. If you are applying for visa with a Community College i20 you have to be 10x more prepared than others going for Masters and PhD. Its hard to sometimes judge a VO's decision by an interview transcript because other factors come into play such as information filled in your DS160 and what you say during the interview, body language during the interview e.t.c . You should be ready to sell yourself by all means .

From your transcript there are some not too good answers

V.O: what are you going to do in the US
Me: I'm going to study at Madison college I think it would have been better you said I am going to obtain an Associate Degree in Philosophy at Madison college after which i do transfer my units to a 4 year university to obtain a bachelors degree.

V.O: so tell me about the program
Me: [s]it's general education is aimed at preparing students for whatever they'd like to major in after transferring credits to get their bachelor's degree in a 4year university.[/s] You Should have spoken about Philosophy and not Liberal Arts and Science Since you already said you are majoring in Philosophy. Speak about the courses you would be taking and how you are excited and passionate about choosing philosophy as a Major. You could speak about some popular people you know that studied philosophy and are doing very well

Side Note: When i got my i20 at first Liberal Arts and Science was written but i requested for another one stating my Major (Computer Science). I wasnt prepared to defend why Liberal Art is written on my i20 yet i am majoring in computer science

V.o: why would you want to spend thousands of dollars schooling in the US amidst the numerous school in Nigeria
Me:[s](surprised though but had to answer) well, psychology is something I'm very passionate about and I'd want to really study it in depth both theoretically and practically, schools here in Nigeria do not really touch the practical aspect (cuts me short)[/s]

There's actually no Class Practical aspect in Philosophy. You only practice philosophy in your everyday life. You should have spoken about the high standard of education that the US offers in terms of teaching and the quality of teaching staffs and also there would be a great diverse and international environment. There are a lot of international students, so class discussions are very interesting and offer diverse perspectives.

VO: and what makes you think the schools there do a lot of practical
Me: ([s]taken aback but didn't show it) I've been in close contact with my international education program specialist from the school and she let me in on all I need to know [/s] She's Right no Practical.

VO: who's sponsoring you
Me: my uncle Red Flag

Vo: what does he do
Me: [s]he's a medical doctor and a business man [/s] Just say he is a Medical Doctor, dont create question for yourself.

I am not an expert but this is to the best of my knowledge. Review this with the Gurus. Better Luck next time

Hello, trust its not too late to enjoy the 50% discount on TOEFL. I sent you a pm, but no reply yet. I am interested.
Walspring:

To those who sent me pm based on Toefl and GRE that I replied. Please login yourself to check the date available and send it to me yourself because I don't have time to do that and my own it to forward what you sent to me to the people that will do the registration

Also those who sent me cash along with their details have an edge over those who sent details only because I will sort out what I have as cash first.

Also those who wanted Toefl and GRE the same time, I am not sure if it will be given to you but I already forwarded that request as well, but as for me I work on first come first serve.

Lastly for those who don't have the full 50% now I wish I could help but the last time helped someone thinking he will balance he didn't up till now and it's a slap on my face not to be able control this levels.

You guys should register your Ets account via computer or laptop and not on phone

I'm interested o. I'm planning to apply for fall 2018. PhD straight (without Msc) as I learnt all PhDs in the states are fully funded by the school.
# What must be my average GRE score to be qualified for PhD without an option of Msc?
# Is GRE alone enough or should I combine it with TOEFL?

I studied computer science in my undergraduate years and working with a Telecom company so I'm looking at PhD in a Telecom related discipline like IT or telecommunication technology.
On the GRE part, thanks for not leading me astray all in the name of rendering assistance...

Sorry for the late travel transcript.. 10th of August

My travel experience was just exactly like others who took Air maroc ~ horrible food, long hours layover and sort of. Though I ate those food as I got no choice. The long layover wasn't boring as i asked one of the officials at cassablanca the password for the wifi and I kept buzzing.. We departed for New York exactly 10pm (Naija time) and arrived 2am(US time).. Nothing much at the POE, I was only asked 2 questions by the beautiful CBP lady after submitting my declaration form & i20

CBP: where are you coming from
Me: Nigeria
CBP: what course will you be studying?
Me: Geosciences

She stamped my passport and I went to claim my luggages.. I was scared my egusi, ogbono, suya sauce(which I brought for someone), garri, beans, maggi with chicken flavor and other stuffs would have been trashed cos of the weyrey I did for those naija custom who wanted to collect 2k for one nonsense NAQS tag & certificate, BUT everything was intact. I waited till 6am for the NYairporter to take a shuttle from JFK to LaGuardia (Thanks to Lagosismyhome & electronic for this info). Got to LaGuardia, checked-in my luggages with American Airline from NY to Atlanta, had a 2hours stop at Philadelphia (very beautiful local airport). Got to Jackson-Hartsfield Airport by 6pm.

NB. If you plan to fly AA within the US, you will pay for luggages(one bag goes for $25 while two for $60). What I did was, I checked in only one big bag and I took the other small bag inside the fit-in cabinet on the plane. I only paid $25.. I got this OT from someone's travel transcript on this forum( I cant remember his moniker). Thanks bro for saving me some money..

Hello house, I recently stumbled on this page while looking for info about studying for PhD in USA.

I need advice on what I can go for.

EDUCATION

Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science - LAUTECH (2:2)

MSc in Environmental and Public Health in the UK (Distinction and best graduating student)

Publications: Five and two in indexed journal (PubMed)

Three years work experience in Nigeria and just started working in the UK as a Biomedical Scientist.

I'm interested in PhD in Infectious Diseases. Yale, Pittsburgh, Harvard, John Hopkins, Minnesota are the universities have seen so far offering this course.

Considering the fact that these universities are highly competitive, does anyone know universities offering this course or have an idea of how I can dig deep to get more less competitive universities offering this course.

Also, I'm yet to take the GRE. Do you know of any university that does not require GRE?

Lastly, any positive advice will be highly appreciated.
