.................................rising sea power of nigerian navy....................................

the 2 nigerian navy new stealth warships will be bigger than the same type in china's navy. its name therefore has been re-coded as P18N, no more Type 056 Frigate. for this class of warships nigerian navy versions are bigger and better than the original chinese navy versions. original Type 056 is 89m, but nigerian version is 95m, we expect it to be better armed as a specially customized warship and have a longer range/endurance days at sea.

The Type 056 is the first Chinese warship with module design, which makes it cover the roles from OPV to multi-role frigate

fresh news coming from india also sounds alike, nigerian navy's 2 to 4 pipav/tiger clone stealth frigate warships will be bigger than the indian 95m, nigerian frigates will be about 110m and clones of tiger frigates they will have extraordianry anti-submarine weapons of both torpedoes and missiles to destroy all enemy submarines.

these nigerian pipav frigates have many more missiles than south african valour frigates, as nigerian navy is becoming the best in africa.

valour frigate south africa : 76mm gun. 8 anti-ship missiles. 16 anti-aircraft missiles. 4 anti-submarine torpedoes.

P18N light frigate nigeria : 76mm gun. 4 anti-ship missiles. 8 anti-aircraft missiles. 6 anti-submarine torpedoes. these nigerian missiles may be more because of bigger size than china's version Type 056, reports say the missiles numbers may be double of what is written above

valour frigate south africa : 76mm gun. 8 anti-ship missiles. 16 anti-aircraft missiles. 4 anti-submarine torpedoes.

Pipav/Tiger clone frigate nigeria : 100mm gun or 76mm gun. 16 anti-ship missiles. 12 anti-aircraft missiles. 14 anti-submarine missiles combination with anti-submarine torpedoes.

This 2,200 tons it is large for a corvette and is designated as a frigate by NATO

nigerian navy : 12 new Fennec anti-submarine helicopters from france

nigeria's large number of 12 fennec helicopters gives nigeria the ability to search and destroy enemy submarines along the whole of nigeria's 850km coastline all at once, by giving each helicopter just a tiny 70km area to cover quickly as the 12 helicopters spread out. excellent naval war planning.

More anti-submarine capability : extra anti-submarine weapons of the ATR 72 ASW can be fixed on Nigerian Air Force ATR 42 Surveyor Maritime Aircraft

Aliena ATR 72 ASW integrates the ATR 42 MP (Maritime Patrol) mission system with the same on-board equipment but with additional ASW capabilities. The anti-submarine warfare variant has been selected by Turkish Navy and Italian Navy for ASW and anti-surface warfare (ASuW) duties, the aircraft will be armed with a pod-mounted machine gun, lightweight aerial torpedoes, anti-surface missiles, and depth charges. They will also be equipped with the AMASCOS (Airborne Maritime Situation and Control System) maritime surveillance system of Thales, as well as electronic warfare and reconnaissance systems, and will also be used for maritime search and rescue operations.

3 attack submarines for nigerian navy soon

From year 2001 to 2008, Nigerian Armed Forces entered into contractual agreements and/or taken delivery of the following :

=Four Balsam-class 61m logistics ships
=Two stealth offshore patrol craft
=British-made supply vessels
=Many dozens of Chinese, US and Singapore-built fast response boats, troop landing craft and gunboats in the 10-25m configs.
Though the 4 Buoy Tenders were acquired from US Coast Guard in 2003/2004, they were about 60 years old. On 12 April 2009, the Navy commissioned two 38-meter Sea Eagle Fast Patrol Crafts (FPCs) - NNS Zaria and NNS Burutu and two new Agusta helicopters procured from Alenia, Italy.

ALSO EXPECTED :

=1,450+ton oceangoing OPVs @ US$260 m
=More 38m stealth Offshore Patrol Craft from Singapore
=Super Dvora and Shaldag gunboats from Israel
=More Chinese gunboats and landing craft (rumoured end-figure of 200 units..including already delivered units)
=More Singaporean gunboats
=Twelve Agusta A109 Power helicopters
=Twelve Eurocopter AS-550 Fennec naval attack choppers
=Four Offshore Patrol Craft from France
=Thirty gunboats from France

The Air Arm of the Nigerian Navy already owns a mix of about 8 Agusta-Westland Lynx helicopters and Agusta 109 Power helicopters. With the expected
With new delivery of TWELVE Eurocopter Fennec naval attack helicopters, it seems likely that the NN Air Arm will have about 20 recce and attack choppers, a floating helicopter base for the NN's Air Arm becomes necessary.

Year 2009, Nigerian Navy asked the Federal Government's approval to add to its inventory about 49 warships of different types and 42 combat helicopters to enable it police the nation's territorial waterways, including the Gulf of Guinea effectively.

To enable the Federal Government meet up with this target, the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ishaya Ibrahim stated that the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Defence, set aside a percentage of the GDP for Maritime Security Equipment Development Fund.

Navy Vice Admiral Ibrahim stated that for the Navy to pursue its operational capacity that will enable the nation become one of the 20 strongest nations, it should procure the different platforms in three phases, namely short, medium and long term measures.

For its immediate plan which will span for two years, the Federal Government will add to the inventory of the Navy two light frigates, two 85 metre OPVs, six 17 metre Manta Class IPCs, six Shaldag MK 11 Patrol Craft, two 38 metre FPBs, two combat Augusta A138 helicopters, one Landing Platform Dock, and two Logistics Ships.

For medium term which will span between two to five years, the Admiral said the Nigerian Navy would have, ten OPVs,20 helicopters, one hydrographic ship, two training ships, two logistics ships, and two mine counter measure vessels (MCMVs).

For a long term plan which he put at between five and ten years, he requested the Federal Government to procure, three Conventional Submarines, two corvettes, two LPDs, 20 long rang maritime patrol helicopters, two training ships and two MCMVs.

ALSO COMING VERY SOON TO THE NIGERIAN NAVY

=Two LIGHT FRIGATES(these will probably be the German MEKO A200 corvettes),
=Two 85 metre OPVs (these are the same Castle-class OPVs which we talked about earlier on this thread)
=Six 17 metre Manta Class Inshore Patrol Craft (two entered NN service in Q1,2009),
=Six Shaldag MK 11 Patrol Craft(one entered service in July 2009
=Two 38 metre Offshore Patrol Craft(two others entered NN service in April 2009),
=Two combat Augusta A138 helicopters,
=One Landing Platform Dock, and
=Two Logistics Ships.

THE MEDIUM TERM (2 TO 5 YEARS)

=Ten OPVs,
=Twenty helicopters,
=One hydrographic ship,
=Two training ships,
=Two logistics ships, and
=Two mine counter measure vessels (MCMVs).

THE LONG TERM (5 TO 10 YEARS)

=Three Conventional Submarines,
=Two corvettes,
=Two LPDs,
=Twenty long-range maritime patrol helicopters,
=Two training ships and Two MCMVs.

nigeria to build 70% of stealth guided missile frigate

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-18300358

a few warship types and definitions

=Frigates (FF or FFG)

A frigate is a medium-sized surface combatant (between 2,000 and 5,000 tons) that is either suited for one specific role (anti-submarine warfare or anti-air warfare), or has lesser all-around capabilities than a destroyer. A frigate may be less capable than a destroyer, but is still a relatively sophisticated and expensive (averaging around US$325 million apiece) platform. A frigate is generally the smallest surface combatant that can conduct extended blue-water missions in a high-threat environment.

=Corvettes (FS)

Corvettes are fast (around 25 knots or better), well-armed ships that displace between 700 and 2000 tons. A corvette is generally not intended for extended ocean-going operations, and is best suited for regional operations. Corvettes are generally the smallest platforms capable of accommodating the sensors, weapons, and combat systems needed to operate in a medium threat environment. Corvettes are sometimes referred to as light frigates (FFLs). It can be assumed that the hull design for a corvette and that of an offshore patrol vessel are very similar. The differences will be in propulsion and outfitting. Corvettes will have higher speed and therefore less endurance and range than OPV, much greater armament, and less space for provisions and habitability.

full deatils on weblink http://www.amiinter.com/pagex.php?pg=vesseltypes

however, warships fight and d.estroy the enemy according to the ships's weapons and NOT according to the ships's body (hull) size, lenght and weight. it is very dangerous to under-estimate a small sized warship loaded with guided missiles.

designs 2D and 3D images of the stealth guided missile light frigate warship nigeria is building at our shipyard in lagos shown in the photos below.

Fellow Nairalanders, like i earlier posted, their is no clear continental military super power. However, Regional military powers do exist.. But if i may put it this way, African largest forces are the east Africans, South Africa are technologically advanced, but they lack personnels with the will power to fight.. They even lack personnels 2 man their submarines and grippens, Nigeria has a formidable force with the fighting will power and can adapt to any threat, nevertheless their weaponries are outdated and old.. They lack that acquisition power.

there are many types of modern weapons nigeria has , but south africa does NOT have. there are 40 year old weapons in south african military, i posted those details many months ago as @Agaugust.

nigeria has a large quantity and quality of brand new modern weapons already in service or on order. on this thread/topic go to pages 103, 115, and top four posts on top of this page 280 and update your knowledge and renew your mind.

above i posted the four warships brand new to replace NNS ARADU and NNS THUNDER and anti-submarine helicopters plus 3 attack submarines are coming.

nigerian air force will be the next, the navy and army have been well empowered with lots of new modern weapons some delivered, some on order. surprises coming next year 2014, more new weapons for nigeria, you never see anything bro !

america, russia, china, france, britain, germany, israel, etc all have thousands of jet fighters, tanks, and warships that are about 40 years old and still in full service. these countries are in the top ten world powers, see their jet fighters like Mig 25, F-15, F-16, Tornado. nigeria is not the only powerful country with 30 year old weapons. no country in the world has a perfect military.

the secret is upgrading of old weapons by engineers. nigeria has upgraded hundreds of T-72 and Scorpion Tanks, and Alpha jets too upgraded in Germany. nigeria will NOT publish all upgraded old weapons for you to read in newspapers.

nigerian air defense is receiving latest anti-aircraft missiles and other systems for full modernization from India. see it below.

when all Nigeria's new weapons arrive, NO country in Africa will be able to defeat us, NOT even Egypt.

Currently, we are showing the world our PROFFESIONALISM in our showdown with the boko haram/ansar dine terrorists. conducting special warfare/airstrikes in strategic and hostile areas in the 3 states, we have recorded 35 KIA,65 POWs. we have only 3 KIA and 7 WIA in the NA. 1 AIRCRAFT damaged and currently under-repair. still waiting for foreign medias to start thir usual arm-chair reports and anti-NA BASHING.

[b]Are you kidding me? What are we acquiring these old (SU-25 frogfoots) and unproven (J-10s,and hongdu L-15 falcons) planes for? Countries like Malaysia are using F15s,F16s,Su 27s and su35 Fulcrum but we choose to go for older and expensive to maintain planes like Su 25 I tire for this country. What is our obsession with second hand things because i guarantee the Su 25 planes won't be brand new when they are brought to Nigeria? The J-10s,hongdu L-15 falcons can still not match the Su 27 or Su 35 fulcrum so why waste money buying them? We are better off buying used F16 and F15s instead of those buying those cheap chinese copies.

I think i should become a weapons contractor for the Nigerian Military as the current contractors are selling us crap.Any ideas on how i can render my services to the Nigerian Military? I am a modern warfare expert with 7 years experience under my belt and i will like to give our boys distinct Advantage with modern and extremely hi tech weapons.

I see the Airforce is now armed with Isreali tavor which is a fantastic AR.I see our soldiers carry assault rifles but i have never seen them carry any side arms like other militaries, may be i am mistaken.

If i were a weapon contractor for the Nigerian Army some of the weapons i will introduce to them is the Herstal range.

HERSTAL RANGE

The current king of Assault Rifles is the FN SCAR

Here are the Assault Rifle Variants for regular combatants

FN SCAR LIGHT

FN SCAR HEAVY

FN HAMR

MK 13 - Grenade Launder

FN FNAC - This the most advanced carbine in the world

For Snipers, i will recommend the following

Ballista PSR

MK 20 SSR

For side arms,i will recommend :

FNX 45 tactical - This gun comes with a red dot sights for quick target acquiring and precision shooting

Not only the airforce, the navy also use CTAR-21. However the airforce carry the standard tar-21.

Only special forces get side arms in nigeria.

As for the jets, the only confirmed purchase is the L-15 light attack/ trainer.

We are not going for the SU-25. However I wish we could get at least 6 of them for counter insurgency operations. The SU-25 is considered to be better than the american AH-10 thunderbolt for the support role they play. The SU-25 is not bad.

The airforce is currently looking at the SU-27 or SU-30. All these though are un-confirmed reports.

In 2012 during the airforce air expo, the PAKS brought along their JF-17 thunder for evaluation by the NAF. The PAK air chief is even currently on a 5 day visit to NAF.

It's seems the NAF might want to go for the SU-30, however this is an un confirmed report.

*Assault rifle for the army. I'd prefer the army goes for the AK-103 or the AK-L 74 which the nigerian police anti-terror squad use.

The FN SCAR, does not come cheap, the police weapon is modern, selective firing and still maintains the ruggedness and penetration of the AK's before it. We also produce the rounds for this weapon at DICON.

Special forces should stick to their CTAR-21, I hope the army also adopts the C-TAR21 for their special forces units.

* another good thing with the akl-74 the police use is, it is devoid of american un predictable bureaucracy, un-like the FN SCAR which is a belgian-american joint partnership.

welcome to this forum sir. hope to see more of you

chinese J-10 jet seems no longer in nigeria's mind. SU-25 frogfoot COIN jet is not certain whether its coming or not, but if it comes, it may just only be for urgent use against b.oko h.aram as it has better armour protection for the pilot than alpha jet and more weapons pylons and payload.

dont worry about weapons nigeria buys from ukraine, we have a defense pact with them for urgent supply of weapons in time of emergency need. the nigerian military seems to be confident that it can get urgent jet fighters from ukraines SU-27 Flankers in safe storage...my opinion, but that is what nigeria did during B.iafran war, we had no combat jets, but during the war nigeria purchased 54 Mig-15,Mig-17,IL-28 jet fighters and bombers to gain air superiority over B.iafra whcih was ruling the skies and bombing nigeria with its b.iafran air forces combat aircraft.

nigeria is very careful about new air superiority heavy jet fighters purchase. we have a very painful experience with british jaguar jets when western nations placed embargo on military suppleis to nigeria, no weapons, no spare parts, no ordnance.

notice that all our new warships are from china and india. eastern/asian countries dont often place weapons embargo. the west dont like to transfer weapons building secrets especially heavy jet fighters. chinese F-7 jets have been successfully dis-assembled and re-assembled locally in nigeria for the sake of full maintenance and copying technology by reverse-engineering for future building of a nigerian made jet fighter.

nigeria gained nothing technologically from all the weapons we have been buying from britain.

the chinese/pakistani JF-17 Thunder will give nigeria oppourtunity of joint partnership to build the jets locally in nigeria aand become a weapons manufacturing giant. people say JF-17 jet is not as good as SU-30, but whom are we fighting today ? Egypt ? Algeria ? Ethiopia ? South Africa ? the powerful countries in africa are all nigeria's friends as at today, but the future may change....war hsitory....friends today, can become enemies tomorrow. Pakistan developed JF-17 Thunder becasue of USA military sanctions affecting the upgrade of its F-16 jets.

SU-27 Flnaker and F-16 Falcon are a bit outdated unless upgraded, and crazy cost of maintenance. SU-30 expensive to buy. south africa is haveing financial problems to maintain 26 grippen jets flying, so 12 are kept out of service in long term storage.

nigeria needs to be careful.

also you may not easily rush from alpha jet to SU-30 of JF-17, you need to a lead-in-trainer of 4.5th generation to prepare pilots to fly 4.5th generation fighters like SU-30 and JF-17, or else you may have pilot air crashes/accidents.

nigeria has the money to buy 100 units of very modern Russian SU-30 jets today and become the most powerful airforce, but we are trying to be careful, and the air force marshals are yet to agree with ministry of defence on this final choice as at last year, but they may have settled the isssue by now, but nigeria military likes to keep secrets.

[b]Thanks for your input,I hope we go for the Su 27s,those planes are wicked.I do agree that bureaucracy may cause a problem in acquiring the some scars variants especially the FNAC which i have not being able to get my hands on so far.

Have you seen the AK 12? Someone showed me this awesome weapon a few days ago.It seems to be placed in direct competition with the SCARs.

It is the latest AK on the market and will probably become the standard weapon of the Russian armed forces. With the Ak 12 ,they have really improved the accuracy of the AK and reduced recoil significantly. That have also added an adjustable stock, scope, rails and bull grip like the scar.It fires the same rounds as the regular Ak.It is still a brand new gun so testing is still on going. Please tell the Army to have a look at it ,i believe it won't be too expensive. Here are pictures of it :

welcome to this forum sir. hope to see more of you

chinese J-10 jet seems no longer in nigeria's mind. SU-25 frogfoot COIN jet is not certain whether its coming or not, but if it comes, its only for urgent use against b.oko h.aram as it has better armour protection for the pilot than alpha jet and more weapons pylons and payload.

dont worry about weapons nigeria buys from ukraine, we have a defense pact with them for urgent supply of weapons in time of emergency need.

nigeria is very careful about new air superiority heavy jet fighters purchase. we have a very painful experience with british jaguar jets when western nations placed embargo on military suppleis to nigeria, no weapons, no spare parts, no ordnance.

notice that all our new warships are from china and india. eastern/asian countries dont often place weapons embargo. the west dont like to transfer weapons building secrets especially heavy jet fighters. chinese F-7 jets have been successfully dis-assembled and re-assembled locally in nigeria for the sake of full maintenance and copying technology by reverse-engineering for future building of a nigerian made jet fighter.

nigeria gained nothing technologically from all the weapons we have been buying from britain.

the chinese/pakistani JF-17 Thunder will give nigeria oppourtunity of joint partnership to build the jets locally in nigeria aand become a weapons manufacturing giant. people say JF-17 jet is not as good as SU-30, but whom are we fighting today ? Egypt ? Algeria ? Ethiopia ? South Africa ? the powerful countries in africa are all nigeria's friends as at today, but the future may change....war hsitory....friends today, can become enemies tomorrow.

I know the AK 12, the russian haven't even started using it.

The photos I posted above are those of the nigerian police anti-terror squad. You see their rifles, that the rifle, I was referring to.

The army should about these rifles and give their AK-47's to members of NSCDC. They (army) only need to put red dot sights or ACOG sights on these rifles and they are good to go.

The last picture below are members of nigerian navy special boat service commandos and their CTAR-21 rifles.

The AK 12 might be too expensive for the army, those FN-SCAR cost about 4-5 thousand dollars per piece. Imagine the army buying those for it's over 100,000 personnel, including extras.

dont you all think we should stop buying from outside except that which we need in the now? I think we should we should invest in research and build our own weapons including the fighters. There is no reason we shouldnt make a mighty warship NNS mamiwater, APC Ajagun etc. We should become a weapon manufacturer.
