If you have been offered philosophy as a course, study it with all your mind and you will love it. I don't mean you you do copy and paste because people have told you on nairaland that it's a useless course. Philosophy is life. Everything we do is philosophy.Most people think it's abstract and not applicable in reality which is a big lie. You will understand yourself and people around you better if you study philosophy. You will appreciate the concept of God better with a knowledge of philosophy. You won't even wait for someone to employ you after studying philosophy. And even when you are employed, you will make a difference if you know what philosophy is about. You will think clearly and logically after studying philosophy. You are expected to be a better leader being a philosopher. According to Plato, a doctor should not be a politician, a lawyer should not be a school teacher, an academician should not be a dancer, an engineer should not be a soldier because he wasn't trained for that but in Nigeria anything goes. According to him too, only the best (philosopher king) should rule. But in Nigeria the best can't even come out to speak for fear of being killed. However, we should acquire knowledge for its sake and not for getting a job. If you study because you want to get a job with your certificate, you will end up getting frustrated cos you might not get the knowledge and you might still not get the job. Acquire knowledge first, then use to knowledge to help yourself. Congratulations. Make sure to have fun because philosophy is so interesting. It will open your mind to a lot of things. It will be as if you are studying all the courses. Like Phil of law. Phil of sci. Phil of edu. Phil of rel. Gender ethics Metaphysics and lots of them. I chose law but ended up studying philosophy and psychology and I don't regret it. The thing is that most of these courses are not known to prospective students. 10 Likes 1 Share |

Hi brother do not be scared or worried about your tomorrow because the giver of life lives but also know that faith without work is dead. I will tell you Philosophy is a nice course and to study law some of Philosophy courses as Logic is a prequisite to be passed by law students in 100. Firstly, let me tell you that you can cross to study Law in your 200 level, and this can only be achieved by studying well and obtaining a good grade in all courses and with prayer, help and assistance - if you know any lecturer that can help you push your bid to cross to Law then you Cross to study Law from 200l. Also make enquiries from your senior about all that as to do with crossing to another course. Philosophy is a course that helps to increase and develop your intelligent quotient, manner of reasoning and it also develop your intuitive capable, it allows you to probe all fact and this emboldens the questioning spirit. So going by this, you can work as a police officer, CID, in the SS, EFCC and other law enforcement agencies. You can function well in Journalism as well, so I implore you to join your university's union of campus journalist or join the press in your faculty or department. Because in Philosophy attention is given to your use of grammar. Another thing about the work of today is ringed around building a skill and also developing oneself through books, conversations and the kind of friends one keeps. So what do you love doing? Or what skill do like? Learn a soft skill. And do you know most lawyers do not even earn as much as you think after all said and done. Majority earning begin from 20k to 30k. Simple! After your studies, register for CIPM, SPRH or other comfirmed & international Human Resources Management certification exam(s). You can volunteer to work as a HR Trainee, HR Assistant, or HR Admin in any structured organization during or after your studies to gain experience & network with professionals in the field. Attend HR seminars & courses. Then, u will realised dat u have made a good choice with d combo of Philosophy & HR certification. Studied Philosophy in one of the South Western Universities, and currently serving in Rivers State.First and foremost,you have to make up your mind to study the course, because base on what you wrote,it as if you are indecisive yet. However,but be it as it may, Logic as an branch of philosophy helps you to reason and approach issues in a more logical way,by applying all you will be thought in Logic. Metaphysics is another branch that sees issues from a more broad way,and explain issues that seems supernatural with reason and physical experience. Epistemology is all about the theories of how knowledge can be attained Ethics try to establish moral issues for every of our actions. Back to the question, with the simple break down above,it enable you to work as a security personal,a very analytical journalist, a public relation officer base on how you are to approach of address people with the aid of Ethics. Its prepare you better compared to other lawyers,that if you will still see law as a course of choice in future. Samswags9: Hi Samswag. It may sound odd to most people , but I will tell you to hold on to whatever you have now and be diligent with it. Let me use myself as a case study.... I had always wanted to study Business admin /Accounting . For 4 years I wrote jamb but I Neva got my preferred course. Though I was offered other course History/English/International relations which I rejected. 5th year I was offered Mass communication at Olabisi Onabanjo university. My parent had to force me to take it. I graduated not with the very good result , but let me tell you I am now an IT Specialist. I have worked in Banking, FMCG and recently got a new offer in Oli and Gas company. I never lobbied or have a godfather except God. All the places I worked, I am even better and smarter than those that studied Engineering or sciences. To summarize it......Take what you have now, Work yourself to attain excellence in it, and see what or Where God will take you to. Wish you all the best in life. |

Dear op, I was in the same exact shoe as you are now five years ago. Though unlike you, I did not choose law because I dislike the profession. Now, you are indecisive buy I will inspire with my story. Search Uzowulu Onyeka Emmanuel on Nairaland and you will see what I achieved just by accepting to study the course with my whole heart. Secondly, like some said... you can be a good public relation officer in so many places. Today, I'm serving in Sokoto and I'm holding two PRO offices which I see as another opportunity to build myself more. Be wise... Let your faith lead you to your fate. |

There will be challenges, but remain disciplined and focused, You will reach your goals/Destiny in life. No knowledge gained is a waste. Have gone through all the comments and I can only picked out some few enlightened ones. People should understand that not knowing what a thing is doesn't not necessarily entails that the thing is useless nor does it reduce the value of such a thing. Hence, we should try to have an open mind regarding something and not just jump into hasten conclusion and generalization. Congratulations on your admission into the department of philosophy, I was once in your shoes just that I choose to study philosophy. Asking this very question implies that you will indeed have the boldness to ask difficult question, because philosophy itself start from "wonder". Now you are wondering, what will be the benefits of studying philosophy. Am a graduate of philosophy , I can attest that the way I reason and approach real life issues is different from the normal way people handle issues. The ability to solve problems and think beyond the box is what every organizations want. A problem solver, idealist, critical thinker. Like what Socrates said "Man know thyself and unexamined life is not worth living ". Am not going to just give you an answer, but I will leave you with this, with time you will get to know the stuff u are made up of, because you will reason it yourself. In conclusion I will say, go to school, open ur mind to learn, ask questions not just questions but fundamental ones, After your studies you will be more equipped to face life issues.
