Super Eagles arrive in South Africa
Posted: 2010-06-02 14:50

Nigeria overcame flight hitches became the first African country, outside of the hosts, to hit South Africa for the World Cup.

The Super Eagles landed at Durban's new King Shaka International Airport at 1100 hours local time and proceeded to make the 90-minute drive to their Protea Hotel Waterfront lodgings at Richards Bay, 160 kilometres north of Durban.

Originally scheduled to arrive on Tuesday, the team had their departure from London delayed by technical problems with their hired aircraft.

The Nigerian government was forced to intervene and sent in a local carrier to fly the team to South Africa.

Nigeria, who have been drawn n Group B with Argentina, South Korea and Greece, play their opening game of the tournament against Diego Maradona's team on June 12

Towering striker Peter Crouch led England's World Cup squad off their plane at the OR Tambo airport as one of the pre-tournament favourites arrived in South Africa.

Crouch, and midfielders Gareth Barry, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard were the first players to emerge in the bright early morning sunshine in Johannesburg on Thursday after their flight from London landed 30 minutes early.

Star forward Wayne Rooney was among the last to appear for the brief walk to the temporary arrival facility.

Coach Fabio Capello spoke briefly to reporters, saying "I hope the World Cup will be a big success for South Africa and also for my team. Thank you, it's good to be here."

Mandela to attend World Cup

Johannesburg - Former president Nelson Mandela will attend the opening and closing ceremonies of the FIFA World Cup, which kicks off next week, the sports minister said on Thursday.

"Mandela has demanded to attend the World Cup. He requested four tickets for the opening and closing ceremonies, and the organisers have granted his wish," Sports Minister Makhenkesi Stofile said in The Star newspaper.

The Mandela family previously said that the elderly statesman was too frail to go to stadiums during the World Cup and would not attend the games. Because of his advanced age, Mandela's schedule is often not announced until the last minute.

Mandela, who turns 92 next month, campaigned for the World Cup to come to South Africa and was present in Zurich in 2004 when the country was named the event's host.

"For us this was a natural thing to do. If there is one person you could point out (deserving of the World Cup) we must say it is Madiba, and it's befitting that he be there," Stofile said, referring to Mandela by his clan name.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter on Thursday said he hoped Mandela would attend the opening of the tournament at Johannesburg's new Soccer City stadium near Soweto, Mandela's old neighbourhood.

Brazil beat Zimbabwe 3-0 in FIFA World Cup warm-up

It was expected to be easy ride for top ranked Brazil against Zimbabwe that does not even feature among the top 100 teams, but it took some effort on Brazil's part to stamp authority. Brazil weathered a Zimbabwe storm before scoring twice late in the open

FIFA World Cup 2010 : Brazil vs Zimbabwe World Cup 2010 warm-up match: Latest score, WARM UP is warm up, but there is difference when you count the condition under which you are doing it, exactly. When the Platform is FIFA World Cup Football 2010, every match is important, especially when one side is world champion.

It was expected to be easy ride for top ranked Brazil against Zimbabwe that does not even feature among the top 100 teams, but it took some effort on Brazil’s part to stamp authority. Brazil weathered a Zimbabwe storm before scoring twice late in the opening half to set up a 3-0 victory on Wednesday.

Left-back Michel Bastos converted a free-kick on 41 minutes, Robinho snatched an opportunist second three minutes later and Elano grabbed a soft third goal 11 minutes into the second half.

Zimbabwe, who have never qualified for the World Cup, were stroking the ball about with the same aplomb as the five-time winners in warm, overcast weather at the 60,000-capacity National Stadium.

Zimbabwean team fought well, they should have taken the lead on 19 minutes when Ovidy Karuru missed a close-range chance. They came close again when livewire striker Knowledge Musona won a goalmouth aerial duel only to be denied by a goal keeper Heurelho Gomes.

Brazil will face another African country, Tanzania, in Dar Es Salaam next Monday. And on June 15 they will face North Korean Team in Johannesburg.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup Venues

There are 10 venues that will be used at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, six of which are brand-new and four that have been refurbished.

The capacities in our quick guide below are for 2010 FIFA World Cup matches, which is generally less than the actual capacity of the venue.

Soccer City (Soweto) – 88 460 capacity – The biggest stadium in Africa was newly-built on the site of the old Soccer City and has been created to resemble a calabash. The stadium glows at night to give a spectacular appearance on the Soweto skyline. It will host eight matches, including the opening match and the final of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Moses Mabhida Stadium (Durban) – 69 957 – The magnificent newly-constructed venue has distinctive arch that has a running SkyCar which carries visitors 100-metres into the air for a 360 degree view of Durban, or can be used as a bungee-jump platform. It will host seven matches, including a semifinal. Moses Mabhida, who the venue is named after, was leader of the South African Communist Party from 1978 until his death in 1985.

Cape Town Stadium (Cape Town) – 66 605 – Another newly-built venue that rose from the ashes of the old Greenpoint Stadium, it is one of the great 'atmosphere' grounds of the world having been purposely constructed to keep the crowd noise within the bowl, and the Cape wind out of it! It will also host eight matches, including a semifinal.

Ellis Park (Johannesburg) – 61 639 – A famous venue in the history of South African sport, Ellis Park got a minor facelift for the FIFA World Cup, which included the erection of two new scoreboards. It was named after a JD Ellis, who made the land for the stadium available to be used.

Loftus Versfeld Stadium (Pretoria) – 49 365 – Named after Robert Owen Loftus Versfeld, who is credited with starting organised sport in Pretoria, the ground may be more famous as a rugby stadium bring home to the Bulls Super 14 franchise, but these days it is very much a soccer venue with two domestic PSL teams, Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns playing matches there.

Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium (Port Elizabeth) – 46 082 – Newly-built for the people of Nelson Mandela Bay, the stadium is a major improvement on the city's old EPRFU Stadium. The venue's roof is made up of a series of white 'petals', making it look like a flower, which has led to it being given the nickname of 'The Sunflower'.

Peter Mokaba Stadium (Polokwane) – 45 264 – Named after former ANC Youth League leader Peter Mokaba, the stadium has been newly-built right next to the old structure which carried the same name. It's red and brown hues are meant to signify the earth and rising sun over the Limpopo province.

Free State Stadium (Bloemfontein) – 45 058 – The existing Free State Stadium, home to the Cheetahs Super 14 franchise and occasionally PSL side Bloemfontein Celtic, has been given a face-lift, including a new main grandstand on the west side of the ground that has increased capacity by 12 000.

Royal Bafokeng Stadium (Rustenburg) – 44 530 – Built by the Royal Bafokeng Nation and opened in 1999, the multi-purpose stadium has had a new tier and roof added to the main grandstand. It is the only World Cup venue with an athletics track and is home to local PSL side Platinum Stars.

Mbombela Stadium (Mbombela) – 43 589 – The smallest of the 2010 FIFA World Cup venues is also possibly the most unique with its animal theme. The 18 roof supports have been made to look like giraffes, while there is a distinctive zebra pattern for the seating. Being so close to the Kruger National Park, the theme is fitting!

England heads for Royal Bafokeng base
Posted: 2010-06-03 11:18

Minutes after landing in South Africa for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, a relaxed-looking Fabio Capello said he hopes not only England, but also the host nation, excel at the tournament.

It was, however, the appearance of the injured David Beckham that caught the attention of the reporters who had braved the chilly Johannesburg morning weather to see the English touchdown.

Led by their captain Rio Ferdinand, the Three Lions arrived at OR Tambo International airport this morning and were quickly whisked off to their base camp, the newly-built Royal Bafokeng Sports Campus holiday resort, which is situated near Sun City.

“I’m very pleased to be here, my team is happy to finally be in South Africa," the Italian told Fifa.com.

“I hope this World Cup in South Africa is good for this country and of course for England. We now have to concentrate on the tournament and prepare well for the event.”

[Watch Brazil train in Soweto

SOWETO'S suburb of Dobsonville is expected to be a hive of football activity this afternoon, following news that the Brazilian football team will hold a 90-minute training session at the Dobsonville Stadium.

Sowetans will be able to watch star players like Kaka in action (Photo: fifa.com) The five-times World Cup champions will start their training session around 3.30pm on Thursday, 3 June in front of 10 000 spectators.

The City has allocated about 10 000 free tickets to residents of Soweto through ward committees, local schools and the Dobsonville Police Station to see the Samba Boys prepare their World Cup campaign, in their own neighbourhood.

"Residents will be able to watch Brazilian coach Dunga take his team through their paces at the Dobsonville Stadium in preparation for their opening match against Korea DPR on 15 June," says Christa Venter, Joburg's 2010 director of operations.

Brazilian star players like Kaka, Robinho and Luis Fabiano are among them.

Venter cautions that although entry to the session is free, people need to have a ticket to enter the stadium. Tickets will not be available at the venue.

Brazil will begin their World Cup campaign against North Korea at Ellis Park Stadium in Bertrams and then take on Ivory Coast on 20 June at Soccer City; they will also play Portugal in Durban on 25 June.

The Brazilians will be looking to improve their current form, which stood them in good stead against Zimbabwe, thumping them 3-0 during a friendly international game in Harare on 2 June.

According to FIFA regulations, every team taking place in the tournament must hold at least one practice session open to the public. The Brazilians started their training routine at Randburg High School, and are moving to Dobsonville for the remainder of the competition.

The 24 000-seat Dobsonville Stadium was recently revamped at a cost of R69-million to the City. It is a multipurpose sports hub catering for athletics, football and other sports codes. It has new suites, media facilities, parking bays, change rooms and a gymnasium, and is one of four Joburg stadiums earmarked to serve as training venues during the World Cup.

As per FIFA requirements, the City of Johannesburg has already completed match venues and training precincts.

Brazil will play Tanzania in Dar es Salaam on 7 June in another international friendly as part of their World Cup preparations.

If there is anything the Super Eagles will miss during the World Cup in South Africa, it is definitely not the feeling of a visitor as the team, as well as the numerous Nigerian football fans who are expected to throng Durban in the KwaZulu-Natal Province, will feel at home.

Apart from the fact that the region of KwaZulu Natal where Durban is situated has adopted the Eagles as the team of Durban for the World Cup, the players, officials and fans will enjoy the warmth of Durban, a city which enjoys almost the same weather conditions as most Nigerian cities.

While other host cities may experience cold temperature during the World Cup, Durban climate between June and July is sub-tropical, mild and sunny, rising up to 25 degrees centigrade and will be conducive for Eagles training.

Even though the Eagles's first two matches against Argentina and South Korea will be played outside Durban, the team are expected to train in Durban and travel out for a day or two to honour those matches.

Their first match on June 12, a remarkable date in Nigeria's political history, will see the Eagles tackling the Albiceleste of Argentina and try to demystify their diminutive attacker and World footballer of the year, Lionel Messi at the Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg.

Five days after facing Argentina, Lars Lagerback will line out his wards at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein against the fast pacing South Koreans while Durban will be the home for their third and final group match against Greece at the Durban Stadium on June 22.

One thing is however clear here and that is while the Eagles train in Durban and play in Johannesburg and Bloemfontein, they are likely to be faced with altitude problem because Johannesburg has an altitude of 1753 metres above sea level while Bloemfontein has 1400 metres. Durban has zero altitude.

Another feature that will make the Eagles and other Nigerians feel at home in Durban is the planned Naija Fan Village, a unique fan park being packaged as a platform for Nigerian companies, states and parastatals to be part of the Worldc Cup party.

The Village which is designed to maximise the experience of the World Cup for Nigerians as well as other football fans from other parts of the world who will be in Durban for the World Cup, will also help showcase Nigerian companies, products, culture and tourism potentials to the rest of the world.

FIFA: 2010 cup very profitable

Johannesburg - World football body FIFA has doubled its income since 2006 by hosting the World Cup in South Africa, FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke said on Thursday.

"Commercially it has been a success," Valcke said at the launch of special courts dedicated to deal with cup-related crimes. "In fact, we have increased our income by 50% since 2006 in Germany to 2010 in South Africa."

Valcke said this money would be invested in football development. He said 80% of countries in Africa "would not have football" if it were not for FIFA's funding.

"If we don't have money, it means football will collapse," said Valcke.  FIFA received a lot of criticism for "taking over South Africa" and that it was "just about money", but, said Valcke, "it is to protect football".

He said none of FIFA's commercial partners decided to drop their support because the tournament was being held in Africa for the first time.

Valcke was confident that foreigners visiting South Africa during the tournament would be safe. "I hope, definitely, that these courts will not have to work at all," he said.

A total of 56 special courts dedicated to deal with 2010 World Cup offences started operating on May 24.

These dedicated courts were officially launched at a ceremony at the Randburg Magistrate's Court in Johannesburg on Thursday.

Rio Ferdinand injury hits England World Cup hopes

England's odds on winning the World Cup lengthened tonight after the captain, Rio Ferdinand, was ruled out of the tournament through injury, the latest in a series of blows to the team's preparations.

A day after arriving at the squad's World Cup training base in Rustenburg, close to where they will face the US in their opening group match a week tomorrow, Fabio Capello's recent run of bad luck continued with an injury to one of his key players.

Ferdinand, installed as captain following the travails of his defensive partner John Terry, left a local hospital on crutches after sustaining the injury during what Capello described as a "minor tackle". The ligament damage sustained to his left knee as a result was serious enough to rule him out of the tournament.

"It is obviously bad news and everyone with the squad is very disappointed and sorry for Rio," said Capello, who was quick to make it clear that the injury was not connected to the state of the training pitch, which has been the subject of conjecture over whether it would be ready on time. "It was an accidental injury in training, but had nothing to do with the pitch."

The England captain is not the only big name Premier League star who could be missing from the tournament after sustaining an injury yesterday. Ivory Coast talisman Didier Drogba, who was poised be one of the biggest stars of the first World Cup in Africa, also saw his participation put in doubt by a fractured elbow sustained during a warm-up match.

The injury to Ferdinand is likely to add to a sense that England's fans are approaching this tournament more in fervent hope than the usual brazen expectation.

Ferdinand, to be replaced as captain by Steven Gerrard, was judged to have completely recovered from the back and groin problems that plagued a disappointing season and restricted him to just 13 Premier League appearances.

David Beckham had already been ruled out with an achilles injury when Wayne Rooney's fitness became a subject of conjecture and left back Ashley Cole was faced with a race against time to return in time for the World Cup. The centre forward and left back are now said to be fully recovered, but there remain concerns over other key members of the squad.

Capello has gambled on selecting Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry, who has become an essential component of his side despite an ankle injury which at one stage looked as though would rule him out completely. Before the blow of Ferdinand's injury, which occurred at the end of the session, England's staff had been cheered by the fact that Barry had resumed light training.

Meanwhile, Ledley King, who will now be in serious contention for a starting berth, can't train between matches due to a longstanding knee problem.

King's Tottenham Hotspur teammate Michael Dawson, who on Wednesday spoke of his dismay at being left out of Capello's final 23, was tonight on a plane to Johannesburg. The other potential replacements in the squad are Liverpool's Jamie Carragher, coaxed out of international retirement by Capello, and West Ham defender Matthew Upson.

Ferdinand, who in 2006 was criticised for a pre-tournament TV prank show that was considered emblematic of the air of ill discipline under Sven-Goran Eriksson, recently spoke about the renewed sense of focus under Capello.

For the Manchester United defender, who cemented his position among the best in the world with a series of impressive performances at the 2002 World Cup, the news will be a bitter blow.

At 31, the tournament in South Africa is likely to have represented his final chance for World Cup glory and just 48 hours before his injury he declared that anything less than winning the competition would not be regarded as a success and England were "not here to make up the numbers".

For Capello, the self-assured manner in which his side clinched World Cup qualification must seem a long time ago. His decision to strip Terry of the captaincy following revelations about his private life, an ill-advised online commercial venture, injuries to key players and conjecture over his contract have all served to add a dose of realism to the usual intoxicating over-optimism.

England's odds lengthened to 15/2 from 7/1 tonight

Ivory Coast captain Didier Drogba could miss the World Cup after fracturing his right elbow

The skipper left the field clutching his right arm in the 2-0 friendly success over Japan in Switzerland on Friday after a clash in the 16th minute with Brazilian-born defender Marcus Tulio Tanaka.

A hospital scan has now confirmed the injury, and team-mate Kolo Toure says the striker is out of the finals.

Manchester City's Toure said he was informed of the news by Drogba himself.

"For him, he said, the World Cup is finished," said Toure.

A team spokesman responded quickly to Toure's comments, insisting that Drogba is 'definitely not out' of the World Cup at this stage

FIFA are not allowing the Koreans to change their mistake or what ever you wanna call it, stupidity. Then they best striker will have to play as a goalkeeper. Bringing some comedy into the World cup

Should Italy be waiting for their recovery or called up a 24th player? Just in case Cagliari midfielder Andrea Cossu is ready to pack his suitcase and join the Italian National team.
