* I'll be back Sunday, he says
* PDP enemies at work —Obasanjo
* We won't substitute Yar'Adua —PDP

ABUJA — PEOPLE’S Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, spoke from Germany, yesterday, declaring that he is alive, hale and hearty, contrary to speculations about his health.

Indeed, Yar’Adua spoke by phone with President Olusegun Obasanjo at a PDP presidential rally in Abeokuta and said he would return to Nigeria on Sunday. He affirmed same in an interview with the Hausa Service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

The telephone conversation with the president was relayed on the public address system at the rally for all to hear.
Rumour of Yar’Adua’s death filled the air early yesterday and it had to took the BBC interview and the telephone conversation with President Obasanjo to douse the tention created by the rumour.

Obasanjo on his part, had harsh words for opposition parties which he dismissed as evil in contemplation and propagating of the rumoured death of Yar’Adua.
Meanwhile, the PDP has declared that the health of its presidential candidate does not constitute a hindrance to its victory at the polls.

Presidency sources claimed the rumoured death of Yar’Adua was part of a grand plan to truncate the transition programme. Vanguard learnt that Yar’Adua was scheduled to undergo a routine medical examination even before the commencement of the presidential campaigns. It was gathered that the PDP candidate opted to participate fully in the campaigns, hence the postponement of the check-up.

Vanguard gathered that President Obasanjo was so concerned on Monday night that he insisted that delaying or postponing the check-up was unnecessary.
Obasanjo, while speaking at the PDP campaign rally yesterday, said: “I told Umaru that he should proceed on the check-up and come back to continue the campaigns.”

Obasanjo told party supporters that his conversation with Yar’Adua at the campaign ground was the fourth yesterday alone.
The conversation between Obasanjo and Yar’Adua went thus:
Obasanjo: Umoru, you are one of the few people who will hear the rumour of their death. Are you dead?
Yar’Adua: I am very much alive.
Obasanjo: We are at the presidential rally and everybody is here. What is your message for the people?
Yar’Adua: Please tell them to accept my apology for not being there with you.
Obasanjo: Can you confirm the report that I have that you will not need surgery but that you will be treated with medication.
Yar’Adua: [laughs] Yes, it is true. I am hale and hearty and will soon join you.
Obasanjo: That there is no need for surgery? Is that what the doctors said?
Yar’Adua: Yes. I should be back in a few days time
Obasanjo: Thank God. The party leaders are here.
Yar’Adua: What about the chairman?
Obasanjo: Yes, the chairman is here with us. He’s looking at me korokoro. The Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih, is also here and he is greeting you.

Yar’Adua: What about the Governor of Ogun State?
Obasanjo: He is jealous but he is here too, greeting you.
Yar’Adua: Gbenga Daniel is my brother and my colleague. I want to send my appreciation to Nigerians for their concern
The President said he was in Ghana when he got information that Yar'Adua was not at the Lagos rally on Tuesday and that he was in fact in a clinic in Abuja.

He said he subsequently sent one of his aides to the clinic and later spoke to the presidential flag-bearer and advised him to go abroad for medical attention.
“I was the one who asked him to travel. We don’t want to take chances. We must make assurances double sure. What makes me happy is that when I talked to him earlier; he said he was taking tests. My surprise is that the rumour-mongers are those who do not like Nigeria and the PDP.

“They were the ones who told Dan Etete that I would die within six months of taking office. They don’t know the son of Obasanjo. They don’t know anything.
“The most painful is that those who started it are Satan’s children. They said that why I asked him to run is that I know he would die within a year. They are terrible.
“PDP as a party brought them out on merit and equity. The tickets of Yar’Adua and Jonathan are the best. We are not looking back. Nobody knows who will die tomorrow. This is a disgrace to traitors,” he said.

President Obasanjo who was at the rally with Dr. Ahmadu Ali, Chief Anthony Anenih, Chief Olabode George, Chief Yinka Omilani, Governor Olugbenga Daniel and his daughter, Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello among others said it was rumoured that he also was dead in Ghana.

Sounding angry, President Obasanjo warned that any attempt at violence by the opposition would be met with dire consequences, noting that he had directed Governor Daniel to ensure that everybody is allowed to campaign without hindrance.

“Anybody who thinks he will precipitate violence would face dire consequences. Whatever you want to say, go to the public to say it. We have a track record. You know what we have done. What we are doing and that when we promise we will fulfill it.

“We will not tolerate violence. Democracy and violence are strange bed fellows. Feel free to talk to the people. You cannot say you want the welfare of the people and turn them to cannon fodders to face the police or even the army,” he said.

Vice Presidential candidate, Governor Goodluck Jonathan, confirmed that the presidential flag-bearer fell ill in Onitsha, adding that what he had was catarrh. “When I saw him in Onitsha, I knew he was not feeling too well. He had catarrh. When it was overwhelming, he went to a clinic. Because of the rigours of the campaign he could not have his medical check-up and had to go for it abroad,” he said.

National Chairman of the party, Dr. Ali, in his speech apologised for the late take off of the rally, noting that the crowd had thinned out but said the PDP was the only party. “I want you to know that PDP controls 31 states in the country,” he said

Yar’Adua: I’m alive

Speaking to the BBC from Germany, where he was flown for medical check-up, Yar’Adua doused speculations that he was unfit to continue in the contest. He said reports that he had collapsed and was rushed to hospital were “not true” and that he would return home soon.
Alhaji Yar’Adua has previously suffered from a kidney ailment.
The BBC’s Alex Last says there has been increasing speculation that he could be replaced as the People’s Democratic Party’s candidate.

I'm only human

Yar’Adua said he had suffered from breathlessness and had taken his doctor’s advice to have a thorough medical check-up abroad.
“There are speculations all the time since the year 2000 surrounding my health. I am only human, as they are,” he said about his critics. “I don’t think a human being has control over his health or ill health, life or death and, therefore, they should not create conclusions on any other human being,” he told the BBC’s Focus on Africa.
His transfer to Germany led to a spate of rumours about the state of his health and the possibility that he could be replaced. Not least, because being president of a country like Nigeria is such a gruelling task and presidential elections are only a month away.

Following the rumour of the death of the governor, there was palpable tension in Katsina, Kaduna and other major cities in the North-West as people gathered in groups discussing the matter. However, early signs that the governor and presidential hopeful was alive started emerging when the state governorship candidate who is also his in-law was sighted at Matazu campaigning.

The State Executive Council also took place with the acting governor,Alhaji Abdullahi Garba Aminchi presiding.
Yar’Adua told the BBC that he was alive and responding to treatment, saying he would be returning home probably on Sunday to carry on with the presidential campaign. He argued that he had a severe dose of catarrh and difficulty in breathing as a result of the strenuous presidential campaign across the country.

He said as a true Muslim, he believed that death was inevitable any time, with or without sickness. His words: “I’m alive. I’m responding to treatment. I have a severe dose of catarrh which has made it difficult for me to breath. It is caused by strenuous campaign across the country.

“As a Muslim, death is inevitable. Sickness is a different kettle of fish, in toto. In sha Allah (God willing), I shall return to Nigeria on Sunday to carry on with the presidential campaign,” he said.

The widespread rumour of the sudden death of Yar’Adua sent shock waves and total disbelief in the North. Government sources told Vanguard in Katsina that the state acting governor, Garba Aminchi has since left the state for Lagos on his way to visit the governor in the Germany hospital.

Presidency accuses opposition

The Presidency, yesterday, accused members of the opposition parties of engineering the rumour that Yar’Adua was dead, saying the opposition was threatened by the increasing popularity of Yar’Adua. Describing the rumour as “wicked and malicious,” Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Mallam Uba Sani, urged Nigerians to disregard the rumour and go about their normal business. “The rumour could only have been fabricated and spread by those who saw thecandidacy of Yar’Adua as a big threat,” he told reporters in Abuja.

“There is no iota of truth in the rumour. It is the handiwork of Yar’Adua’s political opponents wholatched on to his health condition and tried to score cheap political gains,” he said, adding that it wasunfortunate that people could lie about the health of an individual for political reasons.

He further explained that YarAdua who is receiving treatment at the Mainz Hospital in Germany was in touch with President Obasanjo on an “hourly basis.” The presidential aide maintained that the PDP’s presidential candidate was not in a critical condition and was expected back to the country very soon to continue with his nationwide campaign. He also denied that Alhaji Yar’Adua would step down from the presidential race because of his poor stateof health, insisting that not only had the candidate not contemplated it, the ruling PDP had remainedcomfortable with the choice of Yar’Adua as its presidential flag-bearer.

We won’t substitute Yar’Adua — PDP

National Secretary of the PDP, Chief Ojo Maduekwe, yesterday, reiterated that the health condition of Yar’Adua was not critical to warrant substituting him for the April elections.

Chief Maduekwe, who urged newsmen to have respect for health issues and family sensibility of the Presidential candidate said: “The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria had a healthy and lively
conversation with our Presidential candidate a little after 2 p.m this afternoon (yesterday).”

He said the Presidential candidate had been scheduled to go on medical check-up even before the take-off of the presidential campaigns. He denied that condition of the Presidential candidate was critical at the time he was flown abroad Tuesday night.

“I don’t think one should be more open than what we have done. I don’t think you expect our Presidential candidate to go and publish his medical schedule. From now on, the hospital where he is will be issuing bulletin on the health of our Presidential candidate. All I can say to you is that our presidential candidate is hale and hearty.

“We are not hiding anything. If we are hiding anything we will be dodging you. The medical check-up he should have had maybe a couple of weeks ago is what he has gone to do now.

“Every Presidential candidacy is a tough challenge. It pushes you to a top limit. We are very thorough party. PDP is a very thorough people. We don’t want to take chances,” he said.

Reacting to the report of the state of health of the PDP Presidential candidate, Chief Sunday Awoniyi, urged Nigerians to pray for his speedy recovery, adding that Nigerians should be ready to ensure that the President was not given any chance to stop the elections.

“No amount of gimmick from Obasanjo should be allowed to stop the elections. Nigerians should be ready to ensure that the elections should be free and fair and credible. The security agencies should not be used to harass the people during the elections. My recommendations to all the opposition parties is to meet and insist they want to see the instruction the Commander-in-Chief issued to the security agencies,” he said.

Our principal well, Yar’Adua campaign organisation

The Yar’Adua Campaign Organisation in a statement said: “Governor Umaru Musa Yar’Adua has confirmed he is indeed in fine health, despite recent rumours to the contrary. On the phone with his associates this afternoon (yesterday) he said: “I wish to thank all my supporters for their well wishes, and want to assure them I’m quite fine and will be back on the campaign trail shortly.”

Mr Ndu Ughamadu, chief spokesperson for Yar’Adua, declared: “On Monday, March 5, Governor Yar’Adua, as part of his routine medical check-up, reported to his doctors at a private clinic, where regular tests were conducted. Some of the results indicated that the candidate was under stress and would require to rest. He was accordingly recalled yesterday morning by the clinic and advised to rest.

“Following this medical report, his personal physicians who had complained that the gruelling presidential campaign had obstructed the candidate’s medical schedule, saw an opportunity to let the candidate rest. They seized it, insisting that Yar’Adua should not only suspend the campaign for a few days, but must travel abroad for long overdue specialist medical check-up.

“After consultation with President Olusegun Obasanjo and the PDP leadership, Governor Yar’Adua accepted the advice of his doctors to travel abroad for rest and an overdue medical check-up. He left for Germany last night (Tuesday). It is, therefore, categorically untrue that he collapsed and had to be rushed to a private hospital for medical attention.

“Reports from Germany gave clear assurances that the candidate is in fine health. In fact, Governor Yar’Adua in a telephone conversation with his associates this afternoon (yesterday) expressed appreciation to all Nigerians who had shown their concern following reports that he had travelled abroad.

“Governor Yar’Adua further assured Nigerians that he would soon return to the country to rejoin the campaign, re-invigorated and better prepared to carry out his campaign promise of to keep Nigeria moving forward through a proposal of good jobs, constant power, and better education.

He said: “The widespread show of concern by Nigerians is a comforting demonstration of the confidence they have in me and my party to keep Nigeria moving forward.”

Whilst we were posting on the fake rumours of Yar' Adua's death, two more Nigerian soldiers were abducted and killled in Darfur. One of them was cut to pieces.

There are more urgent issues to focus on than Alhaji Umaru Yar'Adua and his daku-daji illness.

@ people,

Information should be something readable. If you were able to read this topic and you derive meaning from it, then is worth it, stop teaching anyone how to speak english here, we are not your students or registered here to be schooled by you.

@ Topic,

Thank God his alive.

And I know his done with his dreams of becoming the president of the Nigeria Federation.

But for Yar'Adua, I don't think his worth voting for and by the time I finally voted for someone else, I know God and the Nigeria community would be happy for saying a life.

@ Demmy,

Yes, in the U.S, someone ruled the entire United States through Phone call, and even in Iraq; someone ruled via Email.
And in Nigeria, I believe we will need a president that will use GSM or postal service to delegate / rule. grin grin grin grin cheesy

@ Big B1,

I still wonder why our brothers at the other side of the sea choose Yar'Adua to IBB, is really funny, but I think, when it finally happens, they will know that IBB is sincere and great.

People, lets forget about Yar'Adua and the very few periods he had left for him to spend happily with his family and focus on this person that has all it takes to lead our great nation, Nigeria.

God Bless Nigeria

From me,

Segoye2

orikinla, please post the source of your news on the abducted soldiers.

Here is the report from the AU Mission that the command sent to me three days ago.

The National Redemption Front (NRF)
Press Release

March 7, 2007 — The National Redemption Front (NRF) strongly deplores fatal on AU forces, Graida, South Darfur, which left two Nigerian soldiers dead and one gravely injured.
There can be no doubt that AU involvement in Darfur peace process has been a spectacular failure. The collusion of the AU with the Khartoum criminal regime and the imposition of the futile DPA have led to increased death, displacement and suffering in Darfur. Nonetheless, the NRF clearly differentiates between AU personnel who took charge of Darfur Peace File and the peacekeepers in Darfur. The peacekeeping force in Darfur consists of innocent soldiers who have been thrown into an untenable situation. They are admirably doing their best, given the circumstance. The NRF and Darfur people accord them every respect and condemn any attack directed against them, irrespective of it source.

African Union Mission in the Sudan

PRESS STATEMENT

The Acting Special Representative of the Chairperson of the AU Commission (Ag SRCC) is again saddened by the attack yesterday, 05 March 2007, in Graida on an AMIS team on administrative duty, where two AU Protection Force soldiers were abducted and subsequently killed. A third soldier was critically injured. This brings to a total of 11 AU military personnel killed on duty and one (1) missing. This deplorable and condemnable act was perpetrated by gunmen believed to be elements belonging to SLM/A (Minni), which is in full control of Graida.
Earlier on the same day, the DPA Implementation Office in El Fasher was surrounded by about thirty (30) armed elements belonging to Movements who have signed the DPA and the Declaration of Commitment (DOC). They threatened the Officer-in-Charge of the facility.

On behalf of the entire leadership of the African Union Commission, the Ag SRCC unreservedly condemns these heinous and cowardly acts. She further stresses that AMIS is here to help achieve peace in Darfur, and is therefore not, and should not be part of the problem. Mindful of the fact that Graida is in the hands of SLM/A (Minni), Mrs Mukaruliza calls on the leadership of the Movement to fully cooperate with AMIS in investigating this dastardly act, bringing the perpetrators to book and recovering the hijacked vehicle. Preliminary accounts of the incident, indeed, indicate that the perpetrators are known elements in Graida who could be easily identified.

The Ag. SRCC is deeply concerned that these and other recent incidents of this nature occurred in El Fasher and Graida, both of them strongholds of the Signatories. She therefore urges the Government, as well as the leadership of the SLM (Minni), the SLM (Free Will) and the JEM (Peace Wing) to prevail on their elements to desist from carrying out attacks against AMIS and its personnel and, instead, cooperate with the Mission, which is working hard and in difficult conditions, to help bring peace to Darfur.

The most salient point to note is dat the man is alive, hale and healthy. What he said on his arrival is most instructive and that is" I wish all those who wished me dead more health, life and prosperity;it is God that gives life and it is Him alone that can take it".

that man is Gods creation like all of us on this thread so for anybody to start spreading unfounded and distasteful rumors of any sort pertaining to his health shd be condenmed by all because no one wld wish that the same thing occured to them.

So to all the name droppers, sheller and "SICKERLY" people who said he was dead, the man wishes you life and prosperity,
