A leading firm on new mother and baby care, Mothersbond Limited, Nigeria has congratulated new mothers (and mothers to be) for the recent extension of available maternity days from 90 to 120 days (four months).

Mothersbond Chief Executive, Michael Osuji, in a statement issued in Lagos and signed by the company commended the government for approving 30 more days to strengthen the bond mothers are developing with their newborns.

Osuji said: “While we note that this is a huge step in the right direction, we would continue to engage with the relevant stakeholders in government, health care experts and the media to push for at least six months fully paid maternity leave. The underlying goal of this is to ensure the moms have no hindrance to exclusive breastfeeding in the first six months, which helps to give babies the best start in life, physically, mentally and emotionally.

“Although our ideal recommendation is six months maternity leave, in the meantime, they can augment with breastfeeding pumps which they can use to express their milk, store the milk appropriately and have their caregiver feed when baby is hungry. This way, they still ensure their little one gets the full nutrition of their milk even while Mom is away at work. A good pump is the Mothersbond super-fast breast milk pump. It saves time by expressing milk fast. Many women in our part of the world don’t know about how useful breast milk pumps are. It helps ensure the chain of exclusive breastfeeding is not broken for the first six months and subsequently.

“We hope the government will not stop at this, but make sure it is followed through especially by private sector employers.”

Feminists won't come now and advocate their Gender Equality crapundecided

Now Women are the ones benefitting, one won't hear them saying men deserve same too sad

Or they think men don't deserve paternity leave as well?...The man needs to be beside his baby as well within those early months so that the woman won't have plenty time to poison the Baby's mind against him sad

Because Women have now mastered the habit of recruiting their kids to their own side right from birth, making the kids feel if it's not mummy doing it or authorising it, it's not right. sad

On a serious note, fathers also needs few weeks off but unfortunately our culturalization do not affirm that, a man should be out there till he drops.

All these media propaganda sef undecided
What pains me more is how Nigerians keep falling or these same unintelligent/unthought tacts over and over again angry

The only thing we know about this policy was that Labour Minister talked about it in faraway Switzerland on 5th of this month. Anything on ground yet?

Any paper work to that effect yet? Has the Ministeries and parastals gotten a formal official notice to commence this policy? Or whatever due process it takes. Can we see the documents?

Please Nigerians, has this policy commenced in your place of work? Did you get a formal notice at work that you can take a 4months maternity leave? Please tell us about it here.

If none, then this is another beer palour talk, orchestrated by the xxxxx to keep xxxx busy. Just like the campaign promises.

Ndi ara!

This strikes a big blow in the hearts of feminist, on one hand, Govt. is trying to encourage mothers bonding with thier child, but if u take a deeper look at it, it shows the productivity of a woman is not as crucial compared to men. Govt can never think of giving that concessions to men for 'father bonding', the economy will be impacted seriously
Please oo!! Before u crucify me, i'm a firm believer in women empowerment

Very NICE QUESTION.
This is exactly what is obtainable in the US and Canada....including other well meaning countries.
They influence the private sector to implement the widely accepted MINIMUM WAGES and Labour laws.
People work for private sectors with fear of retrenchment.
Private sectors pay very well.

IMAGINE how private school teachers are treated in Nigeria like Bushmeats.
In California-USA which happens to be one of the richest states, every establishment abides by the standard minimum wage whether private or government.
Extra work hours put in, in a private sector are also paid for.
Leaves are granted well.

U do not just set up establishments over there, there are minimum standards u must meet....Gas stations are not set up close to residential apartments, churches are controlled.
Schools have standards. Even hairstylists are trained, registered and licensed.

Hopefully, it does not reduce the percentage of women in the workforce and we have same women moaning about "gender pay gap" BS everywhere. 4 months is too much. How will SMEs cope especially if 25% of their workforce are married women?

If you follow the news, you would have read where majority of the legislators who are men threw the bill for paternity leave into the bin.

good move, 4 months is really short but its a start, work life balance is crucial for maximum productivity.

i am taking 10months off maternity starting the end of this month , and when i come back my job will be waiting for me with my 1% salary increase , we also have a dedicated room for nursing mothers usually used for expressing milk with a fully functioning fridge for storage.
We also have a nursery at work of course its not free but its handy and its a sure sign that the govt and workplace gives a damn.
