As the government checked itself? Who is going to prosecute the govt?

The government didn't do the necessary things, now want to punish. Ppl take advantage of the porus and weak system. So the government should rather look inwards.

“Henceforth, we are using this opportunity to call on all tanker drivers, all lorry drivers, all owners of such articulated vehicles to please submit those vehicles for Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) test; they must go through the entire hub and get the Ministry of Transportation (MOT) Certificate of Road Worthiness. We will not allow such vehicles which obviously pose serious danger to other road users on our roads,” Edgal said.

This has got to be the biggest joke of the year. This tragedy was cause by systemic failures. Even if the tanker had the right certificates, who is to say it actually passed the tests? Is it not the agencies that will collect money and issue fake certificates?

And those on the road who are supposed to check... how much bribes have they demanded over the years? And without even bothering to do their jobs of actually enforcing road safety. The issue is transparency, enforcement, and yes, proper funding and education of these agencies.

It's easy to shout and say "this must happen", "that must happen", but the ball is in the court of the agencies to do their jobs properly and not just let things slide when palms are greased.

Here's another gem:
He said government had already directed security agencies to intensify enforcement of relevant laws, especially the State Traffic Law, with the view to ensuring that the roads and highways in the State were safe for commuters to ply without any danger.

Yay! So they will fix all the potholes, cover all the open drains, provide water drainage, provide shoulders on the side of the road, add lights on the highways? How are the agencies going to make the roads safe? By adding more dangerous roadblocks? I think the AG knows all this, but he just has to say something even if he doesn't believe what he is saying...

See how an average Nigerian thinks,so you don't know that accidents caused by a driver or neglect by owner can result in one or both of them being charged for manslaughter?

Hmmm...what will happen to the danfo driver and owner whose bus the tanker was avoiding before losing control?

Have you seen the video?

He was not avoiding anybody.

It stalled in the number 1 lane (where it should not be in the first instance). Lost air brakes and rolled backwards on an elevated structure.

See, right there is what I’ve been saying.

There’s nothing wrong with Nigeria.

It’s the Homo sapiens that infest her that needs restructuring.

...a truck that is not road worthy...haba...its the owner's duty to ensure the truck is in good condition...
And how do you know the truck did not have a certificate of road worthiness from the federal road safety corps? There are thousands of jalopy cars and trucks on lagos roads with certificate of road worthiness.
Besides you can only charge the vehicles owner for failing to get certificate of road worthiness if indeed he failed to obtain one, and not for manslaughter because he was not the one driving the truck.

Hmmmmmmmm. Na the owner drive the truck. The commercial driver that was carrying passengers was not mentioned. Clowns

The owner modified the truck.

The owner did not possibly hire a qualified driver.

The owner did not ensure that the vehicle was in proper operating condition.

Many trucking companies have been shut down here in the US and the owners serving time in jail.

Manslaughter possibly.
So the owners of any vehicle that people died as a result of accident should be charged with manslaughter. So should this also be applied to other vehicles as well, for example okada, commercial buses and even airplanes?

...you have a point but now is the time you will see govt asking for all the normal checks a driver should do before starting engine and owner to ensure trucks are serviced regularly... I bet you ..they will throw enough books at the owner...same govt agency will claim the owner did not get any MOT docs from them and it's all fake...

Good development.
There is nothing good here. Who issues the so called MOT to owners of these trucks? They are still corrupt government officials at the DMV. All you need do is to give them money and stay in your house and get the MOT. These heavy duty trucks supposed to move at night.

This Road Worthiness certificate is actually issued by VIO/Min of Transportation of each state, not by FRSC

PrettyCrystal:
The Lagos State Government is perfecting plans to prosecute the owner and driver of the ill-fated fuel tanker which exploded last Thursday on Otedola Bridge inward Ojodu Berger along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, the State’s Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal said on Monday.

Already, the State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem had at the weekend written to the CP to advise him on the relevant provisions of the law that could guide the ongoing investigation which would lead to possible prosecution.

Confirming receipt of the letter while briefing Government House Correspondents after the Security Council Meeting chaired by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, Edgal said investigations into the incident were ongoing, saying that government would not allow vehicles that pose serious danger to residents on the road.

The police chief, who briefed journalists alongside heads of other security agencies in the State, specifically commiserated with those who lost their loved ones to the tragic incident, while also commending emergency responders who quickly raced to the scene to keep the causality figure low.

“As regards investigation into the matter, it is in top gear. I have just received a letter from the office of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice which stated very clearly charges which we are going to prefer against the driver and the owner of that tanker.

He said government had already directed security agencies to intensify enforcement of relevant laws, especially the State Traffic Law, with the view to ensuring that the roads and highways in the State were safe for commuters to ply without any danger.

Edgal also urged residents to always refrain from converging on the scene of any accident of such magnitude as that of the unfortunate tanker fire incident, saying there could be secondary explosion which could lead to loss of lives.

Put the laws on ground to prevent tankers on busy roads.
Check all tankers coming in and out of the state in good condition.
Establish better access road for tankers to channel their loading in and out of the state.
Fix fine on any offending tankers.
Put measures in place to checkmate drivers mental state.
Equip fire men, officials, medical team and first aiders in strategic places in the state.
Fix all the bad road.

Leave prosecution of driver or tanker owner. Stop thinking backwards

On the grounds of using a jalopy to transport a very dangerous liquid. It sprung a leak in the middle of the road and consumed lives and property as a result

Help me ask them Abeg? The governor lacks the charisma to be one. Should that be the LASG's action when we all were informed by people who witnessed the scene that the accident was caused by a commercial vehicle driver who wrongfully stopped to pick passengers where no bus stop exists. Afterwards, the same commuter bus reckless driver joined lane of oncoming vehicles without proper dilligence as to whether there was/were oncoming vehicle(s) on the lane he was joining. If the tanker driver had not tried applied brakes which led to the . He probably would have rammed unto the commuter bus and that could have killed every occupants of the said bus.

If the Lagos state government goes ahead prosecuting the tanker driver/owner in question. It would simply amounts to violation of their Human Rights. Abi on Wat grounds is the prosecution? Was the tanker leaking or Wat?
