olas24u:/ Right is not absolute. They have the right to dress whichever way they want, which they did. You have the right to wear bikini from Lagos to Abuja. But be ready for the unwelcome responses and gawking from strangers--action and reactions. NPF operatives have the responsibility to weed out riff-raffs in the society, which they do albeit incompetently. Every society has its peculiar problems. People rarely lock their doors in some countries. Well, try living like that in Nigeria. In developed countries, there are areas that are marked territories based on racial bias. Sane folks stay away from such areas without trying to prove a point. This particular case is a sad event with a horrible outcome. But in a lot of cases against SARS, the people being harrassed fit a certain profile. I must admit that the biggest problem is lack of supervisory oversight over the excesses of the SARS operatives (especially the extortion). 2 Likes 2 Shares |

fergieboy: You listed 8 tips up there and none of them could be referred to as a crime. Your tips up there clearly showed a sign of a sick society with failed institutions. Even at that, torturing to death is not in our constitution. 2 Likes 1 Share |

fergieboy: A-Z of what you listed, I didn't see a crime that warrants police harassment. In this country we're so accustomed to having our rights violated that we now feel we owe anybody any explanation on how we live our personal lives. Unless you're caught breaking a law, no police man has the right to block your way and disrupt any of your routines. Policing is not by looking at people, u grow an instinct they're breaking a law, then u start accessing their private lives and properties cos your instincts told you to. In the fundamental human rights, there's clear rights to privacy, properties etc. If one feels being in uniform gives them any rights to trespass on properties they don't own, that's cos illegality and corrupt practices have taken over and that's not policing! |

Obainoneandonly: They don't understand that our diversity is the major mountain we have to climb. Even in the Bible, God had to bless or curse (which either term we choose to use) humans with different languages so as to halt the progress made during the construction of the tower of Babel. Ethnic and language diversity is no small impediment to progress. If you check most or almost all of the big countries we look up to, they speak just one language that everybody understands, if at all there's any diversity, they don't have up-to 10, talk less of the over 200 we have in this country. How can I speak to a fellow Nigerian in English language (our official language), and he nods back in a demeanor similar to that of a dumb person, just because he doesn't understand it? There lies our problem. In India, the official language is English and hindi. Not everybody understands English, but everyone understands Hindi. In China, they have a slight variation to chinese (mandarin), but everyone can communicate to anyone. They speak the same language means that anyone can easily express opinions to any other person. In our own society, the opposite is the case. When there's a situation, we are quick to apportion blame to the other ethnicities but ours. Even on Nairaland here, ethnic and religious division is the order of the moment. That's why, 1. Once an Islamic subject is brought on, the mods wouldn't allow Christians comment on such posts. 2. Any political situation occurs in the country, some of us will be quick to state reasons why it happened because it's the other ethnicity. Whilst it may be true, it only shows that we don't have a unified interest at heart. Our different ethnicities has different cultural beliefs, attributes, customs and way of life that may not sit well with another ethnicity. So if anyone asks me about what I think is the solution to our challenge in this country, I'll give the same answer over and over again- 'division' |
