Women instinctively seeking out protective qualities in the male is as a result of evolutionary predisposition, hence, the typical requirement of women predilecting taller males to shorter ones. Women on average have less body mass, muscles, heights, and strength in comparison to the male, and it is of nature's doing for men to compliment hence, the protective body features men intrinsically possess.

Not just humans share this trait, but other species do as well. The male, as a gender is a protective one, which physical dominance can serve as a deterrence to ward off oppositions.
