A Nigerian man, Chidi Okoye, has taken to social media to reveal the shocking thing he saw this morning in Anambra state.

The man saw a group of women washing bitterleaf (used in preparing the popular Onugbu soup in Igboland) with muddy water from a dirty stream in Awka, the state capital, which they plan to sell in the market.

He shared a picture of the women in action as he urged Nigerians to be careful and always rewash them (bitterleaf) after purchase.

Chidi Okoye wrote;

"This morning on my way having my routine walk, I saw these women in Awka processing Onugbu (bitterleaf) one of our favourite soups with this mud water and from there to the various markets".

"Please rewash your bitterleaf if you are buying the already processed ones".

This is not a government issue but a dirty and unhygienic individual issue.

If you're in the business of selling consumable then you should adhere to clean standards. You can buy clean water.

Bros it is a govt issue. I'm sure you realise this stream serves their water needs such as bathing and cooking too. If they have cleaner and safer means, they won't venture here with the attendant risks. Besides, these are petty traders with low profit, buying water won't appeal to them

Again, you’re preaching to the Choir.

Government or not, the trader shouldn’t be using unsafe water on produce.

The sickening thing is watching Nigerians wait for government to do everything. This is what led General Buhari to call the youths lazy.

Don’t ask what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for her.

This trader is passing cholera.

And some Ipob yoots were insulting Abokis when the picture of that mallam washing his sugar cane with drainage water surfaced.
Now look at what their mothers are doing. Conclusion is that most Nigerians are Dirty and it is not limited to one tribe.

Drainage water shocked . That one is equally bad oh.
Conclusion is that one has to be careful of what he/she eats. If you go to abattoir, you will want to weep.

No body goes to the market and bought food stuff then put it straight to the pot

They went their to wash the bitter leaf because of the availability of water

Bitter leaves consumes water while washing it

I am not in support of their dirty habits but if they should buy water of 500 to wash it how much will they sell out of it

It's a river and not a stagnant water, so it's flowing

Poverty in that part of the country is alarming.

In one breath, they ll be screaming Marginalisation due to how poor they are but as soon as the most developed and rich region topic comes up, their marginalised region suddenly become the most developed and richest. Lol!!!

Bitterleaf will be put into a boiling pot with temperature over 120 degrees hot enough to kill bacteria.

Sugarcane is eaten raw without any form of cooking or heat!

So tell me now...which is more savage?

Another reason Igbo want to die in Lagos. The day our mother in Yoruba land started using dirty water like this to wash vegetables meant for general consumption, that state government or local government will be gone.

Why you can't provide nonstop water, at least provide little for the essentials. Invest in your people and region , Igbo no go hear word. The eastern states governors treat them worst than even the ones not from the east.

Blunt as a hammer.
Bitter truth. Truth hurts.

Look at how low you are. They started it. So you should also join in the train of foolishness. People like you are part of the problem of this country. You support and hail ur oppressors while they use our commonwealth to take care of their children. From the Mallam to this women, both are victims of failed governance but you prefer to look at everything from the prism of politics of the most brute kind. Only God can help you!!

This is typical problem with Igbos, you ll see your kinsmen being stupid and abusive, you ll go quiet but the moment someone comes out to condemn your kinsmen, you ll wake up and begin to tell those people of for fighting back.

He said few weeks ago, your kinsmen were abusing a Northerner doing the same thing your mothers were doing in that dirty water, instead of you to condem your kinsmen’s barbaric act and stupidity you pick on the gentleman who called them out and government.

Pathetic!

I am not being sentimental but factual! You are the one here who may be sentimental.

Heat is still the most potent way of killing all forms of bacteria. I stand to be corrected!

I can see that the Op just came back from London. He never knew that commercial bitter leaf are processed in a river. Abeg let him shove his whiteman attitude inside his pocket.

Did he know that human faeces, cow droppings and fowl droppings are use to grow most of the vegetables we consume. If you like wen you buy them from the market don't wash them very well with salt before using them.

The Op, do u eat public food? have u seen the kind of water they use to wash ur plates?

We are talking of hw to stop INEC and APC from rigging 2019 election and u are here showing us how bitter leaf is washed in ur village stream.

I'm sure some knuckleheads will come here to make it a tribal issue.
This issue of poor hygiene stems from a failure of government at the state and local levels. From the meat and poultry businesses, farm produce, even cooked food, there is nowhere in Nigeria where sanitary standards are adhered to. No health inspectors, no public water supply, no public storage and processing facilities. Nigerians just exist by the ingenious work of God on our immune systems.

In as much as this is just plain dirtiness.....but who buys things from the market, even supermarket without washing before consuming...

The bitter leaf grows in the bush or farm were it is exposed to the natural elements , including all manners of rodents and small animals dropping bodily fluids and waste on them......so no biggie.....major things is WASH PROPERLY BEFORE CONSUMING

the whole idea is of the thing is not when it gets to the cooking stage, now imagine the diseases and bacteria's from that bad water that would end up jumping on people in the market, airborne infections start from there, its like jesus parable of the cups neatness, just cause heat will kill bacteria does not mean we should live dirty, imagine the diseases the market woman are bringing from the dirty river themselves, with an unwashed hand they will still hand you change!

because we are not so rich does not mean we should have a bad mentality(no insult meant),even if we cant afford good water system doesn't mean we shouldn't strive for good hygiene, that's one of our problem in Nigeria, cus the economy is bad, everyone think its an advantage to live a total rugged life
