Electoral Act: APC, PDP Reps Set For Stormy Session Today by Muttee: 9:58am On Dec 13, 2018

Lawmakers of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the House of Representatives, yesterday, vowed to block any move to override President Muhammadu Buhari’s veto of the Electoral Act (Amendment) bill.

On the other hand, PDP lawmakers will today decide whether or not to go ahead with the process of overriding President Buhari’s veto a member of the caucus told Daily Trust.

Briefing newsmen at the National Assembly in Abuja, the APC caucus leader, Femi Gbajabiamila, insisted that the “APC lawmakers have more than the two-third number to stop any veto.”

According to him, President Buhari declined his assent to the bill because of its imperfection and inherent potentialities to disenfranchise millions of eligible Nigerian voters.

He said the bill’s insistence on the exclusive use of card readers for accreditation had “foreclosed all forms of manual accreditation should the electronic method fail.”

“Let me say very quickly that many people don’t understand the implication of signing an imperfect document. What the National Assembly should do is to perfect the document and send it back, then the President (Buhari) will sign it,” he said.

The House Leader said no law mandated the president to disclose his reasons for rejecting a bill, adding that by vetoing the bill, the president had sought to protect Nigerians.

“The constitution is very clear; it does not require the president to give a reason for veto. All he has to do is to say ‘I am not signing’. However, what the president has done is to protect all Nigerians. He wants all votes to count in 2019.

“We have seen instances where the card readers have failed. What Mr President has done is to protect everybody in Nigeria. That means, you can do your electronic accreditation, but also give room for the manual alternative where card reader fails,” Gbajabiamila submitted.

The House required the votes of at least two-thirds of its 360 members to override the president’s veto.

Some PDP lawmakers in the House, led by Ali Madaki (PDP, Kano) attempted to initiate debate on the president’s letter informing the House of the veto.

In his letter to the National Assembly, President Buhari had pointed out certain sections of the bill that needed clarification to avoid “creating legislative uncertainty” ahead of the forthcoming 2019 general elections.

Both chambers of the National Assembly including the Senate and House of Reps have only four days to sit at plenary and override the president before they proceed on their Christmas break next Thursday, December 20.

Buhari as a matter of urgency should sign the bill. If he signed the Peace Accord, why can't he sign the electoral bill?

Meanwhile,
To know if Buhari is 'economically' doing well or not, ask yourself this simple question:

If ecowas law is the excuse for buhari not signing the electoral bill then he has no excuse, he should stop being a hypocrite and go ahead to sign the bill which will ensure free and fair elections because national interest supersedes any other interest.

Hypocrisy is when you criticize atiku for not signing peace deal but encourage buhari not to sign an electoral bill that will guaranty free and fair elections.

I sincerely believe that APC Reps were involved in the amendment of the electoral act ab initio.

If yes, they should even be at the fore front of the law makers agitating for the override of the President so that their sincere efforts do not come to naught. Do they even know that their stance now portray them as being hypocritical while the amendment lasted.

Well it is understandable, PMB is their meal ticket and they won't risk being seen to be against him.

Notice the way PDP is pushing for this "electoral act". Those crooks over there know Buhari can't read very well due to his age and these scammers may include a clause in the act to tarnish, degrade and rig the electoral process.

This is a bill that has been reworked more than four times due to buhari circus,in this last case the presidency was even given a draft of the bill for their perusal ahead of passage with no complain from them only for buhari to turn it down at the end,yet the Apc ass licking bunch of the NASS are here talking of a perfect document as if they were not part of the bill abinitio,Apc/buhari are just pure evil!.

There is no need making a fuss about the bill anymore. It is already dead and can never fly. Buhari is not a weakling like Jonathan who can be blown around by little wind. PDP should just prepare for defeat in 2019.

THE NEW ELECTORAL ACT JUBRIL REFUSED ASSENTING

For the avoidance of doubt, the Act has the following innovations:

1. Mandatory use of card readers.

2. Real time on-the-spot live transmission of voting results.

3. Mandatory access to all party agents to inspect election materials before voting commences.

4. Mandatory access to party agents to be present during voting, collation and announcement of results.

5. Imprisonment for any INEC staff that contravenes the Act.
These ammendment would make our electoral process stronger and more transparent. Now he’s championing peace accord.

If only Buhari and APC had implemented good economic policies, SME's would have thrived and Osinbajo would not have to be going up and down like Baba Oloja sharing 10k up and down...

Tell someone Atiku is coming. Nigeria will work again.
