CrimePolice Arrest 2 Suspected Killers Of Newly Graduated UNILAG Doctor by 4Ebiscoo(op): 11:54pm On Apr 05, 2019
The Nigeria Police Force on Friday revealed it has arrested two armed robbers suspected to be responsible for the death of Stephen Urueye, a newly graduated medical doctor working with the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) .

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) DSP Bala Elkana while confirming the incident told LEADERSHIP that the two suspects Gbadebo Jimoh and Malik Adebowale were being interrogated.

According to him “We have two suspects arrested and we are interrogating them. The arrest was made few hours after Urueye was attacked.’’

Elkana pointed out that the victim was out with his friends on Thursday night before he was attacked by “armed robbers along the lagoon. They snatched his valuables and was injured and later died on admission.’’

Urueye, a house officer, was one of the University of Lagos graduates who participated in the school’s convocation held on Wednesday in Akoka.

He was rushed to the emergency wing of LUTH on Thursday night after the attack but later died on Friday morning after efforts by doctors to keep him alive were unsuccessful.

Piqued by the news of his death, some students of the university staged a peaceful protest at Idi Araba to condemn the killing.

The protesters took to the streets in the area, carrying placards with various inscriptions and calling for justice for the victim.

The students alleged that Idi-Araba has been overtaken by armed thugs and called on relevant agencies to beef up security in the area.

According to the students, they embarked on the demonstration to call the government’s attention to the dangers students of the institution face living in the area.

SportsOsaze Odemwingie Quits Football by 4Ebiscoo(op): 3:56pm On Apr 05, 2019
Former Nigerian International, Peter Osaze Odemwingie has announced his retirement from football at UEFA’s Equal Game conference at Wembley yesterday.

The 37-year-old striker, who once plied his trade with West Bromwich Albion and Stoke City in the English Premiership, made his debut for the Nigeria national team, the Super Eagles in 2002.

He represented the country over 60 times, including two World Cups and four Africa Cup of Nations, as well as winning a silver medal at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

Aside scoring for Nigeria’s Super Eagles at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Odemwingie scored 36 goals in 129 Premier League appearances between 2010 and 2016.

He was the subject of a peculiar story on Deadline Day in January 2013. Believing he was moving to Queens Park Rangers (QPR) from West Brom, the striker drove to Loftus Road, but was refused entry to the stadium after both clubs said no fee had been agreed.

This botched move to QPR saw him falling out of favour with Steve Clarke and was thereafter sold to Cardiff City in August 2013 for a £2.25 million fee. He spent six months at Cardiff before joining Stoke City in a player-exchange with Kenwyne Jones in January 2014.

On his retirement, Odemwingie said: “It’s an emotional day; so many memories go through your head.

“I didn’t know how to do it or where to do it, but I think this is the right place to do it. Wembley is a place with a lot of history in football.”

Odemwingie, whose last professional appearances came for Indonesian side Madura United in 2017, said he intends to embark on a coaching career.

“The next chapter is slowly building up to a coaching career and hopefully I will be coaching in the Premier League one day,” he said

Born on July 15, 1981, Odemwingie played as a forward and winger during his professional career. He grew up in Uzbekistan and Russia and began his playing career with Bendel Insurance in the Nigeria Premier League.

Earning a move to European football with Belgian side, La Louvière, he spent three seasons there before moving on to French side, Lille.

Odemwingie scored 26 goals for Lille, a feat prompted interest from Lokomotiv Moscow that coughed out a £10 million fee for his services in July 2007.

In his three-and-a-half years stint with Lokomotiv, he scored 23 times before leaving for English side West Brom in August 2010.

His sojourn in England saw him scoring 30 Premier League goals for the Baggies and in the process won him three Premier League Player of the Month awards.

PoliticsOil Exploration Continues After 10,000 Feet Deep Operation In North — NNPC by 4Ebiscoo(op): 3:03pm On Apr 05, 2019
Group Managing Director of the Nigeria National Petroluem Corporation (NNPC), Dr. Maikanti Baru has stated exploration in Northern Nigeria will continue despite having gone 10,075 ft deep in the oil exploration on the Kolmani River II Well.

The NNPC boss disclosed this in Kaduna on Thursday at the 40th edition of the Kaduna International Trade Fair.

He said the corporation is working on the Kolmani River II with optimism and high expectation.

He said the exploration will enable the NNPC do a massive appraisal of the discovery of gas reserves made in 1999 in the region.

Baru said President Muhammadu Buhari has personally urged the corporation to go back to exploration on the Kolmani River II Well.

Drilling, he said, has been going on smoothly, stating as at Thursday’s morning, the corporation has dug 10,075 ft deep with a target to reach 14,270 ft exploration.

“The main purpose of this well is to start some massive appraisal of the discovery that was made way back in 1999 of some gas reserves in Kolmani River 1 and so far the drilling has been going on smoothly to enable exploration.

“We will do the needful, if we need to probe any particular section we will take our time to do it, our target date is to see that by the end of May, we complete exploration on that particular well and move to Kolmani River iii which site is almost ready for the rigs to move there and from there we move to other locations,” he said.

He urged stakeholders at the fair to provide an opportunity for stakeholders and long term exhibitors like NNPC to take stock of their participation through the years with a view to consolidating on areas of strength, while working on avenues for improvements.

Baru said the loss of agriculture to crude oil exploitation has retarded local industries that feed on agricultural produce as feedstock, prominent among which he said are the textiles industry as well as tanneries in the North.

On product availability, the NNPC GMD said as supplier of last resort, the corporation would continue to ensure that the nation is wet with “white products” that enable local business movements of goods and services are guaranteed.

Governor Abubakar who returned to Bauchi on Wednesday evening, told his supporters at his Campaign Office that the APC as a party will go to court to reclaim its mandate from the PDP. The video of the meeting which was seen by our reporter was confirmed by the Commissioner of Information, Ibrahim Sade.

Recall that Governor Abubakar had conceded defeat after the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC announced Senator Bala Mohammed of the PDP as the winner of the election.

The Governor who confirmed that he had earlier accepted his defeat as “destiny” informed his supporters that the leadership of the party would file a suit soon to challenge the election.

“I went to Abuja as a loyal and obedient party member. I met with the National Chairman of the APC, I met with the Vice President of Nigeria, I also met with the President of Nigeria.

“All these three offices said that the APC will file a suit in court to challenge the election results of Bauchi.

“As an obedient member, I accept to go with that decision. Everyone knows when the results of the election were announced, I conceded defeat but I contested on the ticket of the party and the party has refused to accept the outcome,” he said.

Reacting, the state PDP Chairman, Hamza Koshe Akuyam said that the decision of the APC to go to court is a welcome development.

SportsChelsea Reject Fenerbahce’s Bid For Moses by 4Ebiscoo(op): 9:05am On Apr 03, 2019
Premier League giants Chelsea have reportedly rejected an initial bid from Turkish club Fenerbahce for the permanent signing of Nigerian winger Victor Moses.

According to Ajansspor, the Istanbul-based side offered a fee of €5million which was quickly rejected by the Blues. Fenerbahce, who have Moses on loan until the end of the season, will have to increase the figure substantially to secure the Nigerian for the long term.

The report added that the Turkish club’s sporting director Damien Comolli is expected to go to England to meet face to face with the Chelsea executives and thrash out a deal.

Comolli, who previously worked at Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, played a key role in convincing Moses to join Fenerbahce in the January transfer window.

The former Nigeria international has been on the books of Chelsea since 2012 but a failure to win favour under current manager Maurizio Sarri suggests his future lies elsewhere.

The 28-year-old was a key figure under previous manager Antonio Conte, who deployed a 3-4-3 system which allowed Moses to thrive as an adapted right wingback. However, under Sarri’s 4-3-3 formation the Nigerian is not suited to a fullback role and faces stiff competition to play on the right side of attack from Pedro and Willian.

Moses’ contract with the Blues runs until the end of the 2020-21 campaign.

CrimeBurkina Faso’s Power Struggle Leaves Eight Dead by 4Ebiscoo(op): 6:21pm On Apr 02, 2019
Eight people have died in eastern Burkina Faso in what a minister described as a struggle between traditional chiefs, a statement said on Tuesday.

“A group of gunmen from villages along the border with Burkina and Ghana attacked the home of the traditional chief of Zoaga,” said a statement by Simeon Sawadogo, minister for territorial administration.

The attack occurred early on Monday in Zoaga, an area which lies on Burkina’s border with Ghana, about 250 kilometres (140 miles) southeast of the capital, Ouagadougou.

“This attack, unfortunately, killed eight people and wounded four,” he added, in the latest “twist in a crisis that has rocked the areas traditional chiefdom for some time.”

The attackers looted and burned shops in a local market before fleeing towards the border, as security forces fanned out to find them.

In late January, a clash between rival local factions killed three people, including a former village mayor.

Intercommunal violence in Burkina has made it harder for the country’s armed forces to fight against jihadist fighters who have infiltrated the region in the past four years.

In a separate attack early on Monday, at least seven people were killed in inter-communal fighting in the Sahel region of Burkina, which is close to the border with Mali.

Politics181 Sacked Workers Floor NSCDC At Supreme Court by 4Ebiscoo(op): 8:45am On Apr 02, 2019
The Supreme Court has affirmed the decision of the Court of Appeal, Abuja that recalled 181 sacked personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Delivering judgment on Monday, the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Tanko Mahammad struck out the appeal filed by the corps challenging the decision of the lower court.

The acting CJN, who led four other justices, held that the apex court lacked that jurisdiction to entertain the matter.

He said that Section 248 (4) of the 1999 Constitution as amended placed all legal disputes which emanated from the National Industrial Court (NIC) to terminate at the court of appeal.

Mahammad further said that that apex court was therefore not vested with the jurisdiction to entertain such appeals.

“In the circumstance, the appellant applicant has reached its limit and the appeal is therefore struck out.

“The matter has come to its finality’’, he said.

The lost appeal was filed by NSCDC against the judgment by the National Industrial Court (NIC), reinstating 182 of its personnel who were wrongly dismissed.

NIC had, in a judgment on March 19, 2015, ordered the NSCDC to reinstate the sacked staff with their full emoluments from the time they were illegally dismissed.

The trial court also ordered NSCDC to return the employment letters to the affected personnel and pay all arrears of their salaries amounting to about N1.2 billion.

The court restrained the NSCDC from further tampering with the employment of the affected personnel.

Dissatisfied with the judgment, the NSCDC, and Immigration and Prisons Service Board (who were respondents at the NIC) appealed the judgment, but failed to diligently prosecute it.

A three-man panel of the Court of Appeal, led by Justice Moore Adumein, in a ruling, on July 18, 2016, upheld the respondents’ request and dismissed the appeal for lack of diligent prosecution.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Obono Musa and 180 others had sued the then Commandant-General, NSCDC, alleging unlawful termination of their employments.

They prayed the court to declare that the verbal and oral suspension of the claimants by the NSCDC was null, void and of no effect.

The claimants also sought an order directing the defendants to recall all the claimants to work and to also release the original copies of their letters of employment to them.

They also asked for an order of the court directing the defendants to immediately pay them all arrears of salaries from 2007 till date.

Speaking to newsmen after the court session, Mr Ibrahim Bawa, Counsel to the respondents expressed delight on the outcome of the case, adding that his clients had been exposed to hardship since 2007 when they were unlawfully sacked.

He therefore urged President Muhammadu Buhari to impress it on the Commandant-General of the corps to without delay effect the decision of the apex court.

Bawa also said that the president might contemplate investigating the untidy manner the establishment was managed.

NAN further reports that the 181 personnel of the corps were seen dancing and thanking God for their legal victory in the premises of the court. (NAN)

PoliticsSURE-P Workers Owed N400m Salaries, Laid-off Via Text Messages by 4Ebiscoo(op): 10:19pm On Apr 01, 2019
A defence witness on Monday told the National Industrial Court sitting in Jos that workers employed under the SURE-P by the National Primary Health Care Development Agency Subsidy Reinvestment (NPHCDA), MCH), were laid off via text messages across the nation.

Mr Egahi Ada, Director of Audit, NPHCDA, made the disclosure in his testimony before the court during cross-examination by the Counsel to 159 plaintiffs, Mr Philemon Dafi.

The 159 employees under the SURE-P programme, had dragged the Federal and Plateau Governments before a Justice Kenneth Amadi, National Industrial Court, over alleged unpaid N400 million in salaries and allowances.

The employees, through their counsel, Dafi, alleged in an originating summon that sometimes in 2015 the defendants stopped payment of their salaries and allowances without just cause while they continued to work until the institution of the case before the Court.

Also joined in the suit are the NPHCDA, State Ministries of Health and Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and 12 out of 17 Local governments.

“What I know is that we gave them employment letters which was for a year engagement and thereafter we sent text messages to all of them disengaging them across the nation, ’’ Ada explained.

“We told them in the text messages that they would be called upon when necessary. This was because the Sure-P programme was discontinued by the new administration.

“But when we were ready to re-engage them, we engaged only few of them and not all, ’’ he further asserted.

But when Dafi asked him, whether he was aware that virtually all the Geographical Zones have cases against the agency in courts following the alleged injustices done to the workers, the witness answered in the negative.

On whether he knows if out of the 16 defendants, he was the only that was claiming the programme had ended with the President Jonathan-administration, he said no.

After the testimony of Ada, the Defence counsel, Mr Godwin Garba, applied for an adjourn on the grounds that his second witness, had travelled outside the country.

Dafi and other defence counsel did not object to the application.

Justice Amadi, the presiding judge, then adjourned the case to May 15, May 16 and May 17, for continuation of defence.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports on Monday that the claimants included 71 Midwives, who were earning N40, 000 as monthly take home and 85 community extension workers earning N25,000 each month beside N5,000 accommodation allowances to all of them. (NAN)

PoliticsPresident Buhari Discloses One Of Nigeria’s Major Challenges by 4Ebiscoo(op): 10:25pm On Mar 31, 2019
Meeting domestic food requirements and providing raw materials for the manufacturing sector and export is one of Nigeria’s major challenge, President Muhammadu Buhari has said.

Concise News understands that Buhari comment came on Saturday at the opening of the 40th Kaduna international trade fair, organised by the Kaduna Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (KADCCIMA).

Buhari was represented at the occasion by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Okechukwu Enelama.

“For instance, we rely on state governments to provide access to land, act as mediators in conflict prevention and resolution, link-local Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to the supply chains of processing companies,” he said.

“States also provide the needed infrastructure to link farms to processing plants and markets, and above all, provide a conducive environment for businesses and their host communities to thrive.

“I am glad to say that we have such a partner in the Kaduna State Government.”

He added that “we continue to face the challenge of meeting domestic food requirements, providing raw materials for the manufacturing sector and export.

“Therefore, creating a strong linkage between agriculture and industry is a sure way of bringing about sustainable growth by creating new jobs, improving value addition.

“The move will also create wealth for farming communities, improve manufacturing output and enable the roll-out of infrastructure around farming communities which will industrialise our country in the long run.”

PoliticsFresh Moves To Ease Magu Out Unfounded – EFCC Spokesman by 4Ebiscoo(op): 8:11am On Jan 14, 2019
Mr Tony Orilade, Acting Head, Media and Publicity of the EFCC, says media reports on fresh moves to remove the Acting Chairman of the commission by the Presidency is unfounded.

Orilade said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday while reacting to a report that the Presidency planned to remove Ibrahim Magu, the commisaion’s Acting Chairman.

According to him, Magu will not want to be distracted by unfounded media reports.

“He is focused on the fight against corruption and majority of Nigerians who are beneficiaries of the corruption fight are happy with him.

“With securing 312 convictions, including two ex-governors last year and five convictions already in 2019, the EFCC under Magu’s leadership deserves an applause,” orilade said.

The media stated that the EFCC chairman may be asked to pursue further studies in order to advance his career in the Nigeria Police Force where he is already a commissioner. Magu had been in acting capacity for more than three years.

The Senate had twice refused to confirm Magu as substantive chairman of the commission. (NAN)

PoliticsPDP Broke And Hungry: Amaechi by 4Ebiscoo(op): 10:22am On Jan 13, 2019
The Director General, President Muhammadu Buhari/Osinbajo 2019 Campaign, Mr Rotimi Amaechi on Saturday said that the opposition Peoples Democratic party (PDP), is broke and hungry.

Amaechi, who is also the Minister of Works and Transport, said this in Bauchi at a political rally organised to receive 18 prominent PDP members in the state who had defected to APC.

According to him, “they are broke, they are hungry and want to come back to steal.

“Because they are broke, they are looking for cheap means of fund and we look at them when they say you are hungry.

” They have easily forgotten that they stole $2 billion US Dollars to prosecute 2015 election but we won,” he asserted.

Amaechi further asserted that ” we listen to our colleagues at the other divide and say that you are hungry because they stole all the money meant for you.

“We want to assure you that we will not fail you and will never fail you. Bauchi is our traditional state we come to rest not to campaign.

” I was here in 2015 and saw what politicians called mammoth crowd, that is crowd that cannot be counted,” he stressed.

Senator Ali Ndume, had earlier described PDP administration in the last 16 years as Kleptocracy who abused their leadership positions to acquire wealth to extend their power.

Ndume, who is also the Campaign Director General Buhari/Osinbajo for North East, said that Buhari has fulfilled the promises he made in 2015 on security, economic diversification and war against corruption.

“Nigerians are today left with two options to either choose those who have the country at heart or those who will destroy the country,” he asserted.

Gov. Muhammadu Badaru of Jigawa in a goodwill message called on the people of Bauchi to cast 2.5 million votes for Buhari as against the over 1 million votes during 2015 polls.

Badaru recalled that Buhari took over the administration when 27 states of the 36 states in the country could not pay workers salaries when crude oil was selling at over $100 US dollars per barrel.

He enumerated series of projects and programmes executed by the present administration in the country and called on the people not to be deceived by disgruntled politicians. (NAN)

The governors elected on the platform of the party had on Thursday shunned the meeting meant to consider and approve the structure and operational modalities of the campaign for the reelection bid of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Buhari had on Monday inaugurated the APC Campaign Council with the appointment of the National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as the co-chairman of the council to fully take charge of the campaign.

Though the party had denied insinuations that the governors’ absence was as a result of disaffection, credible sources within the party, however, confided in Saturday Telegraph that the governors stayed back due to their non-support for Tinubu’s appointment.

This is coming as the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) asked Buhari not to leave his campaign to Tinubu, while doubting the president’s fitness.

PoliticsCome Out And Engage Nigerians, Secondus Challenges Buhari •asks ‘thieves In Lago by 4Ebiscoo(op): 8:09am On Jan 11, 2019
National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus, has challenged President Muhammadu Buhari to come out and engage the people with his record of performance if any and stop hiding in the Villa.

Prince Secondus said that Nigerians “must elect a President they can see, feel, a President that can act like the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) flag bearer, Atiku Abubakar.”

The PDP National Chairman, who was addressing a mammoth crowd of party supporters in Lafai Square in Nasarawa State on Thursday in continuation of the party’s nationwide campaign, said that Buhari is hiding in the Villa while college of presidents operating as cabals mess the country up.

According to a statement from the media office signed by Ike Abonyi, Secondus said that Nigeria can no longer afford analogue leaders in digital era pointing out that PDP flag bearer Atiku is bringing his digital approach to leadership to rescue Nigeria.

He said that while PDP candidates and leaders are engaging the people for votes, Buhari and APC leaders are hiding in the Villa planning how to rig election.

“But let me reiterate this warning to them including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies, that any attempt to manipulate the election would be an invitation to a national crisis.

“If they love this county, they must not attempt to thwart the will of the people because it would be a recipe for crisis,” Secondus said.

He said that Buhari’s wife confirmed that the Presidency under her husband has been hijacked and wondered what other prove we need to show that Nigeria is in a wrong hand.

The National Chairman also made some scorching remarks on some politicians in Lagos who talk about corruption when they are thieves who have milked the state dry.

“Some thieves from Lagos are also talking about corruption, some of them had nothing before they became governor but today they are stinking in stolen wealth and talking of corruption,” he said.

Prince Secondus said that APC has already collapsed with some of their state governors talking with the PDP.

He assured the jubilant crowd of mostly youths that PDP candidate Atiku believes in the vibrancy of the youths, and his administration will be for them because they are the future.

“Your gubernatorial candidate, Hon. David Ombadugu, is a youth and that shows you PDP’s belief in youths, so caste your votes for him and all other PDP candidates,” he stated.

Atiku, his running mate Peter Obi, the campaign Director General and Senate President Bukola Saraki and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, all in their speeches underscored the importance of voting out President Buhari and the APC.

Politics2019 Election: Lai Mohammed Talks On Plan To Expel Saraki's Men In Official Posi by 4Ebiscoo(op): 8:02pm On Jan 10, 2019
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Thursday, said some of the loyalists of the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, holding federal executive positions will soon be booted out.

The Minister disclosed this on Thursday in Ilorin at a ceremony organised by the Kwara All Progressives Congress (APC) to sensitise and mobilise the party’s women leaders ahead of the forthcoming 2019 general elections.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that thousands of Kwara APC women, who turned up at the event, were lectured on their roles and expectations during the general elections.

The minister said that despite the stance of Saraki, in using his position to sabotage national development to the detriment of the people, his loyalists from Kwara were still occupying executive positions.

He said the Federal Government would not hesitate to sack those beneficiaries in executive positions.

‘‘Some of the people they nominated to the boards of government’s agencies and parastatals are still there, yet they claim that Kwara has not benefitted from this Federal Government.

‘‘These people, some of whom are holding executive positions, will soon be shown the way out,” he said.

Mohammed added that Kwara elections, like that of the general poll, would be issue-based devoid of ethnicity, religion or gender.

The minister alleged that 40 years of the over five decades of the creation of Kwara, the Saraki family had cornered the state’s commonwealth.

‘‘The main issues here have to do with how our state has been governed in the past 50 years, 40 of which have been dominated by a single family.

‘‘What has happened to the commonwealth, which has been cornered by a single dynasty at the expense of the people.

‘‘Where are the roads and other infrastructure to justify the huge resources that have accrued to the state?

‘‘If you follow a path for so long, and it leads you nowhere, won’t you try another path? These are the issues,’’ he added.

The minister stressed that the 40 years of the Saraki’s family in power, the state has no potable water for people to drink, adding that workers had been pauperised because of non-payment of their salaries.

He said the Saraki dynasty in Kwara had rendered the quality of life of the people to the lowest point.

Taking a swipe at PDP, the minister said that the APC in its campaign had been proudly showcasing what the Federal Government had achieved since assuming office in 2015.

‘‘Ask them who tarred the Ilorin-Jebba-Mokwa road that they (PDP) took to Bode Saadu, where they launched their campaign a few days ago.

‘‘That road was impassable during the time of the PDP, the same party they are now touting as the one with the magic wand,’’ he said.

Mohammed added that contrary to the lies of the opposition, PDP, President Muhammadu Buhari was not the reason the states had not performed.

‘‘Ask them what they did with the several bailouts they received from the Federal Government.

‘‘Ask them why they could not pay workers’ salaries despite getting bailouts and Paris Club refund; they claim they are helping the state to offset workers salaries.

‘‘Remind them that they are only returning some of the commonwealth they have looted. They are only doing so out of panic.’’

The minister also said that the claim by the opposition that the APC would take Kwara to Southwest zone was incorrect.

PoliticsBuhari Hints At Realignment Of Salaries Of FG Workers With Jumbo Pay by 4Ebiscoo(op): 4:28am On Jan 10, 2019
Labour: We will resist any cut in wages
Avoid delay, present minimum wage bill Tuesday, Senate advises president
Omololu Ogunmade and Onyebuchi Ezigbo in Abuja

Inaugurating the Technical Advisory Committee on National Minimum Wage wednesday, President Muha-mmadu Buhari put smiles on the faces of workers, stating that wage increase had become inevitable and non-negotiable.

“I want to make it clear that there is no question about whether the National Minimum Wage will be reviewed upwards. I am committed to a review of the Minimum Wage,” Buhari told the advisors at the State House, Abuja.

But he might, however, have raised the red flag when he hinted at a review of the pay of federal government workers whose packages are already above the N30,000 new minimum pay being insisted upon by organised labour.

Labour’s response to the hint was swift wednesday: it would be resisted.

The president spoke in measured tones as he said although the reality was that workers’ pay would have to move up, those who had crossed the new bar would have understand the federal government’s call for a review of the excess in view of its dwindling purse.

According to him, even though the minimum wage is on exclusive legislative list, state governors are being carried along because of the current prevalent economic challenges.

He said since the provisions for the payment of the new minimum wage had already been made in the 2019 budget, funding the increase would not be difficult.

However, the president said the new minimum wage would not be automatic for every federal government worker, pointing out that instead, salaries of civil servants already earning above the national minimum wage would be reviewed.

Those expected to be affected by this review are the staff of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), among others, who earn humongous salaries.

Buhari told the committee members, “It is important to explain that even though the subject of a National Minimum Wage is in the Exclusive Legislative List, we have been meeting with the state governors because it is imperative that the federal government carries the state governments along in determining any upward review of the minimum wage for workers.

“This is especially necessary considering the prevailing public sector revenue challenges, which have made it extremely difficult for some of the governments to pay workers as and when due.

“As you know we, at the federal level, have made adequate provision for the increase in the minimum wage in our 2019 budget proposals which we submitted to the National Assembly.

“Therefore, we will be able to meet the additional costs that will be incurred in moving up all personnel who are currently earning below the new minimum wage.

“However, we anticipate that after the new minimum wage has been passed into law, we will be going into negotiations for salary review for all the workers who are already earning above the new minimum wage. It is, therefore, important that we are properly prepared to meet these demands.”

The president added that the national minimum wage must be done in a way that it will have no adverse effects on the targets set by the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP).

According to him, it was against that background that the constitution of a technical committee to advise the government about the funding of additional wage bill ahead of implementation had become imperative.

The committee’s terms of reference as listed by Buhari are:

“To develop, and advise government on how to successfully bring about a smooth implementation of impending wage increases;

“Identify new revenue sources, as well as areas of existing expenditure from where some savings could be made in order to fund the wage increases without adversely impacting the nation’s development goals as set out in the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan;

“Propose a work plan and modalities for the implementation of the salary increases;

“Any other suggestions that will assist in the implementation of this, and future wage increases.”

The president said given the urgency of the national minimum wage matter, the committee has one month to conclude its assignment and submit its recommendations.

The committee is chaired by notable economist, Mr. Bismarck Rewane.

PoliticsBribe-seeking Cop Shoots Two Drivers by 4Ebiscoo(op): 8:03am On Jan 09, 2019
A police inspector identified as Mohammed Usman on Tuesday allegedly shot and wounded two drivers in Lokoja, Kogi State over alleged refusal to give bribe.

The incident was said to have occurred at the Ibro Motor Park, opposite the Lokoja International Market.

Ibrahim Yakubu, the branch chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), said that trouble started when one of their drivers was stopped by a police team at a check point in Zango area on the Lokoja-Okene highway and ordered to offer them bribe.

According to him, the driver refused and continued on his journey towards Lokoja.

He however added that the policemen chased after the driver to the Ibro Motor Park.

According to him: “We were just sitting at the park at about 11am, when we started hearing sporadic gunshots. The next thing, we saw one of our fellow drivers run to the union office.

“The next thing, we saw two policemen follow him. Our union officials addressed them and they left.

“The driver said he left his vehicle by the roadside and when we went there, we met a police inspector inside the vehicle.

“We told him that we are taking the vehicle to the park and he followed us inside. On getting to the union office at the motor park, we told him that we had already settled the matter with the other two policemen.

“Upon hearing that, he (Inspector Mohammed Usman) became furious and brought out his gun and first shot on the ground. As he continued his sporadic shooting, a bullet hit one of our drivers, Mohammed Attah, on the leg, while another driver, Emmanuel, was hit in the stomach.

“Following the incident, the other policemen stationed outside drove into the park with their hilux bus, and quickly rescued the inspector and drove out.

“We then went to B Division Police Station to report the matter and the DPO followed us with the victims to Federal Medical Centre and from there we went to the state police command, to report the matter.

“The CP has ordered that the policemen involved should be detained until the outcome of victims in the hospital.”

The spokesman of the Kogi State Police Command, William Aya, who confirmed the incident, explained that the policemen who were on stop-and-search operation stopped the driver, but that he refused, and as a result, they pursued him, on the suspicion that he might be carrying incriminating items.

He added that the driver got to town near a motor park and abandoned his vehicle by the roadside and ran into the park.

He said one of the policemen went after him, and that in the process, there was a misunderstanding which led to accidental discharge.

Aya said that the policemen involved have been detained, while the matter is being investigated by the State CID.

He added that appropriate sanctions would be taken against those found wanting, at the close of investigation.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Football: Jurgen Klopp Defends Changes As Wolves Dump Liverpool Out Of FA Cup by 4Ebiscoo(op): 9:09am On Jan 08, 2019
WOLVERHAMPTON, UNITED KINGDOM (AFP) - Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes an early injury to defender Dejan Lovren highlighted why he chose to name a second-string side in bowing out of the FA Cup 2-1 to Wolves on Monday (Tuesday morning, Singapore time).

Klopp made nine changes to the side that lost for the first time in the Premier League this season to Manchester City last Thursday, with Lovren one of only two players to retain their place.

However, the Croatian pulled up with a hamstring injury after just six minutes and was replaced by 16-year-old Ki-Jana Hoever.

"Hamstring, is what I heard - without any signs before," said Klopp on what forced Lovren off. "I asked everybody, no signs, nothing, just out of the blue, so that's the decision you have to make.

"I am not sure what you all would have said if immediately from the beginning if our centre-half situation was Fabinho and Ki-Jana; then probably a few very smart people would tell me that I don't respect the competition or whatever."

Goals from Raul Jimenez and Ruben Neves either side of half-time sent the hosts into round four, where they will face Shrewsbury or Stoke City, despite Divock Origi's fine strike briefly bringing Liverpool level after the break.

Hoever's introduction meant Liverpool fielded three teenagers for the majority of the match with Rafael Camacho and Curtis Jones also handed debuts.

However it was the visitors' most experienced player, Milner, who was at fault for the opening goal when Diogo Jota caught the former England international in possession in midfield and put Jimenez clean through for the Mexican to score his seventh goal of the season.

Without Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane, Liverpool were struggling to get any momentum going forward.

But the visitors were level out of nothing when Origi collected a loose ball on the edge of the area six minutes into the second period and smashed the ball high past John Ruddy.

Wolves, though, have made a habit of upsetting the Premier League's established top six in their first season back in the top flight.

After beating Chelsea and Tottenham and holding City, Manchester United and Arsenal in the Premier League, Liverpool can now be added to the list of scalps for Nuno Espirito Santo's side thanks to a wonder strike from Neves.

"He has talent, he has done it before and we encourage him to shoot from range," said Wolves boss Santo. "It was a good strike."

Only a brilliant save from Ruddy denied Xherdan Shaqiri a stunning equaliser and Liverpool a replay as the Swiss's free-kick was touched onto the inside of the post by the Wolves goalkeeper.

Klopp had a final roll of the dice by throwing on Salah and Firmino for the final 20 minutes, but even their firepower failed to spark a fightback and Klopp's team selection will now be seriously questioned as he is still to deliver a trophy in his four seasons in charge.

However, with Liverpool still in pole position to deliver a first league title in 29 years, the German coach defended his selection to minimise the chance of his stars suffering injuries.

"We played a similar line-up and had three tough games in the last couple of weeks, so it was clear we had to change," Klopp added after a run of four Premier League games in 13 days over the festive period.

"The intensity of the last few games gave me the information it was not possible to start with these three up front. Only Dejan played a lot of games in the last three or four weeks, pretty much all the games...He played today and was injured."

PoliticsWow: Melaye ‘in Good Health’, Fit To Stand Trial — Police by 4Ebiscoo(op): 9:00pm On Jan 07, 2019
Police say the lawmaker representing Kogi West in the National Assembly, Senator Dino Melaye, is in good health.

The Assistant Inspector General of Police, Medical, Mr Kaomi Ahmadu, disclosed this to reporters at the Police Hospital, Garki in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

“All this long, we have been managing him and thank God he is in good health now,” he said.

“At any moment, if there is any course for us to invite a specialist or take him to a specialist centre, we oblige him. He also has a respiratory rate of 20 per minute; so, by and large, he is in sound health.”

Ahmadu also certified that Senator Melaye was medically fit to stand trial in the case of alleged attempted culpable homicide preferred against him by the force.

Although Senator Melaye claimed he needed further and better care, the AIG said the police would continue to provide good and quality medical assistance for the lawmaker.

He noted that Senator Melaye was transferred to the medical facility from the custody of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Abuja after he surrendered to the police on Friday last week.

The AIG stressed that the lawmaker was in a critical state when brought into the facility, but they were able to stabilise his condition.

“You will remember when he (Melaye) was rushed here, he had an acute asthmatic attack. He was brought in from the SARS facility and we managed his acute asthmatic attack,” he said.

Ahmadu disclosed further, “He came out of asthma and since then, we had an incidental finding of malaria and typhoid fever. Along the way, he raised complaints of some symptoms suggestive of some nerve fractures.

“We took him to a specialist centre where he was reviewed by three specialists that are concerned on the brain, spinal cord, and nerve routes.”

The AIG briefed the reporters in company with the Force Public Relations Officer, Mr Jimoh Moshood.
