Under the worst loading condition, a building should be save. The problem might likely be from the foundation of the building, the type of reinforcement and the method of reinforcement.

Our govt will be quick to bring the engineers and owner of the collapsed building to book......but will never learn to clear huge trucks from our bridges.......they will rather wait until it collapse.....and they will give their mumu condolences......a country where government do not care about the lives of citizens.....May God help us!!!

How can a school be in a top floor building of this nature? Have you heard of resonance and forced vibrations? Children following a particular rhythm can cause resonance!
Not necessarily about resonance and forced vibration, there is so much those kids could generate given their median age, weight, mass and number.
It's more about the building structure and foundation, I have been to places that clubs or pubs are located at the topmost floor, but hey those are not shit holes like Nigeria

Nigeria shaaaa! angry angry cry cry Like someone said, Nigeria is its own natural disaster. A lot of the tragedies experienced in this cowntry are purely avoidable, man-made, unforced errors that we end up suffering for due to wicked leadership and perpetually compromised regulatory authorities/systems. What a shame!

This isn't the fault of leaders but corrupt agents of regulatory agencies who are employed to implement regulation for all, but they collect brown envelopes and give abominable approval to what they should abolish or persecute people for.
Is the guvnor or President supposed to be everywhere? In jobs that people are employed and paid to do?

Support Nigeria Authorities efforts to demolish slum dwellings. In those Western Nations you all dream of going, such a calamity as this would be used as a turning point. The decision would be taken to clear all slums, devil take care of anyone made homeless.Better homeless or return to your village than dead in this type of disaster.

lemme teach nairaland members as a practicing civil engineer..
this building was built with a design to serve as a residential building but was converted to a school..
the implications is that the live loads has been increased from the designed loads..
that is why the building was cancelled..
so the people who went ahead to allow such conversion of purpose for the building should be brought to book.
in such cases the civil engineer is exonerated
My brother let me tell u categorically, if they look well into that structure u wil later see that it is not a civil engineer that handle the project but a mason calling himself engineer.
see most of this fault are frm the clients inwhich they prefer mason / quack for there project than structural engineer just because of the money (now will that money buy life after so many wastages).
my own suggestion is that Federal government should give coren power to validate any structure and ban any one in which certified engineer are not in control then we can have safe living.
hpe u stil remember the collapsed building at porthaccort, after investigation we learnt that full load of cement was stock at the fourth floor (imagine).
we have long way to go here in Nigeria

The ground floor was the crèche/KG.
The third floor was the primary school

First and second floors were residential.

May the dead RIP

See before and after of the location

I hope you read the bold part of what you quoted. So what exactly is your point? All ministries exercise regulatory powers in whatever form or capacity, that is leadership. Those regulatory agencies are headed by people, they are leaders. This is not the first time buildings have collapsed due to obvious lack of infrastructural integrity. Some stupid staff of an agency probably received bribes, gave a sham approval and later this kind of things occurred. Now where have you heard that such staff was fired for giving an illegal approval? Which governor or president has fired or meted out stringent disciplinary measures against a commissioner, minister or head of agency under whose watch this kind of monumental disaster occurred? None.
Do you now see why bad, wicked leadership is a problem?

After employment, there must be supervision too to ensure that the employee operates in line with set down guidelines, policies and laws. Who is responsible for that? A supposed leader. Never try to excuse them in a bid to make them look good or isolate a perpetrator. It is a collective responsibility which they must carry.

Who gave approval for that building? Are the people in government who gave approval for that building going to be punished? No! Are the authorities not supposed to do their work by assessing buildings to know if they are structurally defective and order for demolition? The idiots are always waiting for one calamity to happen before they make small noise and thereafter they go to sleep again.

Personality, I can use my eyes to see 'fake' storey buildings everywhere in Lagos here.

Useless country

Including the ministry of education that approved the school

I heard a man wants to kill himself becos throughout last week his 3kids stayed home due to school fees...now this week he went to clear the fees, the children started school and then this happened; they all died.

Just imagine, after running around to clear the children's fees, only for them to resume and die.

He is like, why did this happen?? Even if it wanted to, why not last week?? And why was he even able to find the money?? Cos if he didn't, they might still be alive.

I'm speechless....
Some things are beyond us.

No he's not.. for a high rise building just look at the size of colums n slabs. Stricturally the building is badly designed and its glaring
