It’s relative. Some, and I would say quite a lot, of graduates from Nigerian Universities too cannot even write application letters. Punctuations are so bad - and they are even bereft of Skills needed by employers these days.

Truth is, many Nigerian graduates are unemployable: largely due to the obsolete system of education though - Polytechnic or University alike.

But the discrimination is not in Knowledge - it’s in the ranks and remuneration structure. It’s a subtle way of influencing prospective students to apply to Polytechnics as well - which would at least reduce the huge population seeking a University degree.

If you ask me - it’s a good thing. But overhaul all the curriculums for courses in the UNI and Polys already- it’s not 21st century like!

Great point ! Well articulated .you allowed school to pass through you .well done sir

until an HND holder can apply for Masters without doing PGD before I will believe abolition of any dichotomy. if the abolition is mainly on FG and states jobs then I think it should be called waiver because I see no abolition in that

But in all sincerity both are not same.
Yes, especially when it comes to technical and management education. I chose to study a management course in a polytechnic even though I wrote a UME as advised by my people and passed on merit. That one year industrial training alone is a plus.

A university degree is not a paper! taken nothing away from the polytechnic graduates, with all their skills they still need someone who understands the theories that drive the practice and that is why, university graduates should always have an edge. Without theories there's no productivity.
Have you taken a careful examination of polytechnic graduate writing skills?
have also taken note of university graduate writing skills too... the system presently in this country doesn't require a divide, because everybody can work anywhere whether in his field or not, not to talk of as a technologist or a scientist... funny enough they're areas of specialization and doesn't mean one is higher than the other in position.

This type of decision comes, when
uneducated people are in power.

The entry requirements for Poly's were
always lower than for universities.

The lecturers were always of lower
qualifications than those of unis.

Most poly graduates can hardly speak

Don't let anyone deceive you, if you have the chance, pls go for university degrees instead of HND! The dichotomy will always be there. Many parastatals will never employ someone with HND cert over University degree cert.

Besides these abovementioned, when trying to go abroad to study many developed countries don't even recognize HND cert.

My 2 cents.

They should do well by removing the dichotomy that exists between the rich and the poor, politicians and the rest of us. How can a politician's one month salary be more than ones entire life earning in the useless country?
As for university and poly graduates, it's only in government and some few industries discriminates. And to say university graduates are superior in knowledge to their counterparts in the poly is a very big lie. Have worked with all of them and come to a conclusion that inbuilt knowledge and personal commitment makes one better.

Bro you are getting it all wrong. In the polytechnic system, there is theory as well as practical. After passing through both system ( HND and B.Eng both in Mechanical Engineering), I can boldly tell you that what matters is what you can offer.
Las las my B.Eng was to fulfil all righteousness
Tell them again... Most people make comments based on the knowledge available to them, they don't go further to at the least do a little research on what obtains as regards to a discuss that's beyond their knowledge...
Just like you, I have been in the 4walls of both a Polytechnic up to HND level and a University up to BSc level, the university curriculum is a watered down version of whats obtained in the HND curriculum... the dichotomy ish I believe was born out of lack of understanding of the difference between a technologist and a Scientist... they are worlds apart but are meant to complement each other not rivals or one is higher than the other, funny enough a technologist (HND holder) can function effectively in both specializations, while an ordinary (BSc Holder) can only function as a scientist... it's proven even in my place of work, it pops up day in day out.

Yes, the "SKILL" and that is what Polytechnic is all about, while Graduates are managers of skilled workforce. Don't mix it up. They are not equal, never been equal and will never be. Forget the propaganda. Go and get a degree and stop fruitless internet campaign.

To my own understanding I think Polytechnic is better because they apply both theory and practical, in Nigeria that's what you need to succeed rather than just theory which is the foundation of all universities.

so will there be productivity with theories without practice?,the reality is both are complementary n the dichotomy is needless but for egocentric fellows like you,if fluency in English is the true measure of competency then those that study English language as a course should be considered as the most competent.

Both are kings in their lane, if theory is dependent on practicals to actualize it goals, so why under rate d practical knowledge n vise versa, its jst so pathetic we concentrate on irrelevancies rather than to create a platform where both can come together, translate n transform their abilities to develop the country n beyond.. Technologically we are far behind, economically we are struggling, May God open our inner eyes.

Please educate us.

You really don't need one to educate you on it. Probably you are in need of an argument.
The same reason government established government technical colleges(called Craft Centres), Commercial Secondary Schools and the regular secondary school.

Kindly make use of Google and check the difference for your question.

I have no problem my brother .

"In ur heart of heart" can you compare Hnd Engineering to B.Eng?

While I was undergoing 2 months intensive for my last job . Various candidates from different background were taught Accounting from the scratch to finish in 3 days . We had an exam 2 days later, guess what ! The Engineers schooled all of us including a Chartered Accountant and a lady that had first class in accounting . These guys scored 98% . While we that spent 4 years in Uni studying Accounting managed to score 90.

Bros na all of us go school but we need to know our mates .

THE ISSUE OF DICHOTOMY BETWEEN POLYTECHNIC AND UNIVERSITY HAD BEEN OVER FLOGGED FOR TOO LONG.

The worst part of it being the fact that it has been POLITICIZED.

The federal government should make polytechnic run Bachelor Degree such as BTECH.

With the BTECH a poly graduate can just go for masters degree without the intermediary of running PGD.

The difference is hard to miss .

Try teaching both an entirely new thing and see who learns faster.

It would be a crime to pay both same salary .

University graduates are wired to be problem solvers and critical thinkers, Diploma holders are skilled craftsmen that take instructions.
Go n form your own government n formulate whatever policy that suit your ego,as for this one it's done.
