I drive a corolla with very small tires in this same Nigeria and I've been using it since 2019 and I never throway am because of bad roads and its very much a daily driver.
So I don't know what point you're trying to make here.

It depends on where you ply. There are roads that would render your car unusable in months

Not on the list. You have to request for valuation. If the vehicle is on the sea, ensure your agent gets the valuation before it arrives

And when you buy these 'brand new' cars from innoson and co, where are you going to drive them? In the air?
No good roads!

Let basic necessities be attended to first before talking about...

He even said, what's the essence of enabling environment? Likely really??

What's the essence of an enabling in a.society? It's okay.

Among all the natural resources the earth has its just about 10-15% Nigeria does not have,.. is it gold steal, iron, timbers, name them... If the forest is not safe to cut down timbers how will workers go there to get materials to fabricate the woods used for production or how will the iron sheet be transported without delay and down time from the mining site, to the factory and then to be distributed?

Is it only electricity that is needed to produce a car? Those sub companies don't they also need raw materials to do their jobs?

Just imagine the numbers of babies that died in UPTH due to power shortage, the other time it was kidnapper and rapist after doctors and nurses and somebody is asking what does an enabling environment has to do with industrialization, like seriously

I still stand by my words, the Nigeria government is design to extort, steal and enslave her citizenry nothing else... Reason for the double taxation, no power yet you still get estimated billing. As the prepaid helped in power generation or distribution in the country? They always put the cart b4 the horse and expect miracle to happen. Do the right thing first which is by first creating and enabling environment for foreign investors, give them tax waivers as side attraction, let the society be safe so people can go about their lawful duties both at night and day without fear of being kidnap, hijacked or being killed, steady power supply for business to strive, good roads to move goods and services around. After making all of these available then you can place a ban on import so local content can strive, you only leave the borders open for those content you don't produce.

Don't twist My words,I said there's no such thing as an enabling environment, its mostly the excuse from people who can't work or are too dumb to think for themselves. America grew and still prospered during the wild west era when anarchy was the order of the day.
I've been in war torn countries in Africa that industries still operate and move their goods and carry out their everyday business in the heart of the insecurity areas,
What they do is they hire the military that come with their technicals they use to escort their trucks on the roads.Where you saw a deficient "enabling environment",smarter people saw POSSIBILITY.

Japan is probably the world's leader in the auto industry, which raw material Japan get? undecided
You are so naive to think that you need to have raw materials before you can produce, whereas there's something known as global trade and very big ships to move oversize load.

Also ,stop with this foreign investor nonsense, local industries can grow to become powerhouses.
We didn't need foreign investments to be self sufficient and even export cement,Infact lafarge is playing second fiddle to Dangcem and BUA at the moment.
Same way we can grow local auto makers to become giants too and one way to do that is to raise tarrifs for cheap imports,so that they can not be dirt cheap and be low-balling the markets.
I even think the mark up is small ,that useless 03 corolla should sell for 6m in my opinion.

I think they're trying to build the local auto industry, not about them wanting to suffer citizens for nothing.
Cheap, usable locally made cars will soon start springing up because of this new NCS drive to satisfy that demand.
It doesn't make sense for Nigeria to be the dumping ground for old used cars around the world that doesn't produce any substantial productivity for our populace except directly to the owners of these cars, which doesn't benefit government and the society at large in anyway.
It's a great move, however I only have problems about the way it was done,of not preinforming importers before hand.
are you kidding me, this is the worst move ever. How can you say they are supporting local made nonsense. How many times have you see innosons car go through accident test? Have they done air bag test and had a collision with another car in ther company to collect data? Has dangote car plant done something like that too? Which local nonsense. A car you will be during and you won't even be sure you're safe incase of an accident. A used car that is clean from 2005 is better than any new Nigerian locally made car.

Omo this your response will discourage the use R500.
The Sienna you mentioned is it not as old as the R500?
or is R500 more expensive than Sienna?

R500 will cost way more to run than the sienna,
And is expending so much on such an old car worth it?
I'm sure your guess is as good as mine.
Sienna of the same year is a way lesser evil.

Thanks for your advice.

Is there price-point at which you would consider the R500 value for money?

Or is it an all-round bad vehicle?

1m toks,so that I can easily throw it away when it's money guzzling tendencies starts to show its ugly head.
However, I doubt if anybody will sell to you at that price, reason I advise you to let go of the thought if you can cos I don't see profit in it ,neither do I see it as money that was exchanged for value.
Just my learned opinion sha.

MODIFIED.

Let me provide more details.

It is not toks, it is Nigerian used.

It goes for 2m.

I need something respectable to move around till the end of the year when I will most definitely upgrade, but I don't want just an econobox but something that is thrilling to drive without spending a boatload of money.

I don't even mind flinging it for 1m by year end if it doesn't serve my purposes.

I can well afford a Sienna, but the businessman in me is telling me that I would rather use 10m to set up a 8.5KVA off-grid power generation plant comprising a hybrid inverter, solar panels and a bank of batteries, buy more computers and servers, pay for 5TB internet access for my team than dump 6 to 8m in a vehicle.

I was thinking of getting someone with a Star Diagnostic Scanner to do a comprehensive check on the vehicle and if it checks out, then I would take a plunge. I could even buy the Star Diagnostic Scanner if push comes to shove.

I am also thinking of going to Mercedes Benz for a printout of its maintenance history before I pay for it if the first check goes well.

That way I can multiply that 10m several times by year end and then I can conveniently get the Sienna even if it costs 10m by year end.

For my line of business, I have been hearing enough hues and cry that I my vehicle is beneath my status, so I am not expected to turn up in a Corolla.

I am drawn to the V8 engine, and the fact that the engine/transmission is said to be rock solid reliable unlike the R350.

That said, if it doesn't check out, I'll pick a Nigerian used Toyota Sienna 2011/2012+ that costs under 5m in its place.

Since you seem to understand Mercedes Benz cars so much, which one would you recommend?

Do the extra details provided make a difference to your position on the intended purchase?

Regarding this customs clearing issue, I would advice anyone thinking of importing to do some serious legwork in knowing the clearing price ahead of time.

I was caught in the new policy and I wasn't prepared but God pass dem. Many cars are earning demurrage at the ports (I saw them there).

Will u be able to sell it up to 1m.... hmm!
R500 pros.... I can’t say. But like SeaTrade said, an old luxury Benz na money pit. Forget the hype!
