If dreams are anything to go by then the spirit is definitely different from the soul. The spirit seems more active while soul is stable and more in tune with your will, whereas the spirit has a mind of its own.

Genesis 2:7 (KJV)

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.[/quote]

From Gen 2:7 (KJV) above the followings can be reasoned out;
1.0 that the man formed from the dust of the ground was lifeless (just like an effigy).
2.0 that when God breathed into the nostrils the breath of life, that is, energized the lifeless, gave life to,
3.0 then the lifeless man became a living man (living soul ).
So therefore, the energizer (life giving ) is the spirit while the energized physical and functional man is the soul. When the Bible says "The soul that sinneth , it shall die." , the soul referred to here is nothing but a physical man who is capable of committing sin. Over a period of time the use of spirit and soul interchangeably has brought a serious confusion.

1)The soul is the spiritual body.

2) The spirit is the essence of Man Genesis 2:7 (And God breathed into man's nostrils, the breath of life). The eternal breath keeps man alive forever.

In the next verses, the Bible says Dead in Christ shall rise first. But we can also see in another scriptures that a part of them is alive in Heaven

"For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first"

"The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water" Luke 16:19

According to the bible, human is divided into three. They are the body, spirit and soul. At deslth, the spirit goes to God and the body goes to the dust. The soul that sinneth shall die. When a man dies, it is the soul of the man that died. Spirit dont die.

Body= Hardware
Soul = Software
Spirit= Electricity

None can function without the other.

The spirit of a believer is what gets born again immediately after repentance but the soul continue to be born again as we move to conform ourselves to the lord.
The body will be translated when Christ appears

A Spirit is a soul while a soul is a spirit

There's no much of a difference just that a spirit can harbor in a soul but a soul can't harbor in a spirit

Let's say for example in a sentence... "99% of Afonjas are possessed with an evil spirit hence resulting to their extreme depravity" that is an afonja soul is in possession of a spirit which is the spirit harboring in a soul. And the spirit is causing them to inflict harm to the environs and even their family members

You can also put it the other way round like All Afonjas are filled with the holy spirit but that's an impossible tense but it isn't what we are here to discuss

Furthermore.... There's more but I hope you get something from the few points I made

Off to church

Man’s body is the physical vessel while the spirit is the spiritual vessel. The soul interfaces both vessels. When he dies, the spirit returns to his maker, his body to dust and his soul faces judgment.

The soul is the foundation of everyman, without your soul, your flesh cannot function. When your flesh dies, the soul lives on. Then a spirit can possess the soul to act under its influence, either the spirit of God or evil spirit. A soul is a host for any spirit to enter, dwell and act on. That is why we always find ourselves repeatedly doing things we do not like.Have you ever wondered why people who destroy things when they are angry, always regret their actions as if they were under an influence. Yes they are, the spirit of anger comes and acts, and then leaves to return again when an opportunity comes. Until you give your life to God, until you start living under the influence of the holy spirit, you will remain under the bondages of classified sin. As a child is born, the spirit is born to possess the soul, the spirit of sin is born in him or her. I wish l could go further but l do not want to deviate from the main topic.

The bible mentions the word Spirit, Soul and Body in 2 Thessalonians 5:23.
This verse shows clearly that there are three components to a man.
Differentiating should be our pursuit and not dismissing it

Your spirit is like a phone that you charge and recharge to call someone (God). It's your spirit that serves as intermediary between you and God. That's why someone can die spiritually and the body will still be functioning well! But when you do God's will, your spirit will wake up again.

While your Soul is your essence of living, it's a product of your mind, emotions, feelings and the likes. It is a Free-Will thing that allows you to choose between worldly (bad) or spirit (good). A mindless person is a person of 3years downward or a mad person. A soul does not die!.... It lives till eternity either in heaven or fire choose!

Although all are metaphysical!

Spirit is the living being in us that makes the body and soul alive. The spirit is the nature of God and that’s why the Bible says that the spirit of God bears witness with our own spirit that we are the children of God.

The soul is the mind. It’s the center or the engine room of creativity. The soul helps us to imagine something and create it. The Bible also says that as a man thinks in his heart, so is he.

The body is house that accommodates the spirit and soul.
When one is dead, it’s the spirit that leaves and because it’s the spirit that quickens (makes alive) the body becomes helpless when the spirit leaves.

CaveAdullam:
Explanation of the Spirit, Soul and Body is a very sensitive matter that needs serious consideration and many facts finding as only few knows the appropriate truth.

Lets see some illustrations;
1.The Spirit is the king of Man, the soul is the steward of man and the Body is the servant. I guess you know the relationship between the King, the Steward and servant in a palace?

2. The Spirit is the current, the Soul is the filament and the body is the bulb in an electric bulb.

It is only with pen and paper that it seems spirit, soul and body is distinct but in reality all of them functions the same time.

Spirit(God consciousness): It consists of the Intuition, Communion and Conscience. The Spirit is the life of man and where the Holy Spirit dwells in a born again Christian. Without it the body becomes lifeless.

Intuition: where God reveals Himself to man and where man knows the things of God.

Communion: fellowship with God.

Conscience: ability to know what is good and bad according to God's standard.

Soul(self consciousness): It consists of the Mind, Will and Emotion. It forms the personality of a man.

Mind: your intellect, knowledge about things, understanding about natural and spiritual things etc.

Will: the ability to decide whether to do something or not.

Emotion: feelings of joy, love, fear etc.

Body(World consciousness): the physical part of man that interacts with the world. It is also called Flesh. It is where the spirit dwells and find expression in man.

This is just a brief summary @Holycity, you will know more and better if you fellowship with God in Truth and in Spirit through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, studying of the Bible and other Spirit inspired books and most especially prayer.

The book Spiritual Man by Watchman Nee will help you know more.

Thanks. G

God bless.

The Bible’s answer
The word “soul” in the Bible is a translation of the Hebrew word neʹphesh and the Greek word psy·kheʹ. The Hebrew word literally means “a creature that breathes,” and the Greek word means “a living being.” * The soul, then, is the entire creature, not something inside that survives the death of the body. Consider how the Bible shows that the human soul is the whole person:

Adam, a living soul, at the time of his creation
Adam was not given a soul—he “became a living soul”

When Jehovah God created the first man, Adam, the Bible says that “man became a living soul.” (Genesis 2:7, King James Version) Adam was not given a soul—he became a living soul, or person.

The Bible says that the soul can work, crave food, eat, obey laws, and touch a dead body. (Leviticus 5:2; 7:20; 23:30; Deuteronomy 12:20; Romans 13:1) Those activities involve the entire person.

Is the soul immortal?
No, the soul can die. Dozens of Bible verses refer to the soul as being mortal. Here are some examples:

“The soul that sinneth, it shall die.”—Ezekiel 18:4, 20, King James Version.

In ancient Israel, the punishment for the most serious offenses was that the “soul shall be cut off.” (Exodus 12:15, 19; Leviticus 7:20, 21, 27; 19:8, King James Version) The person would “be put to death.”—Exodus 31:14, King James Version.

After a person dies, the literal term “dead soul” is used for the corpse in some Bible verses. (Leviticus 21:11, footnote; Numbers 6:6, footnote) Although many Bible translations use the terms “dead body” or “dead person” in those verses, the original Hebrew uses the word neʹphesh, or “soul.”

“Soul” can mean “life”
The Bible also uses “soul” as a synonym for “life.” For example, Job 33:22 uses the Hebrew word for “soul” (neʹphesh) as a parallel for “life.” Similarly, the Bible shows that a person’s soul, or life, can be risked or lost.—Exodus 4:19; Judges 9:17; Philippians 2:30.

This use of the word for “soul” helps us to understand verses in which the soul is said to be “going out” or “departing.” (Genesis 35:18; King James Version) This figure of speech indicates that the person’s life is ending. Some translations render this expression at Genesis 35:18 as “she breathed her last.”—Good News Translation; New Jerusalem Bible.

Where belief in an immortal soul comes from
Christian denominations that believe in an immortal soul get this teaching, not from the Bible, but from ancient Greek philosophy. The Encyclopædia Britannica says: “Biblical references to the soul are related to the concept of breath and establish no distinction between the ethereal soul and the corporeal body. Christian concepts of a body-soul dichotomy originated with the ancient Greeks.”

God does not condone merging his teachings with human philosophies, such as belief in an immortal soul. Instead, the Bible warns: “Look out that no one takes you captive by means of the philosophy and empty deception according to human tradition.”—Colossians 2:8.

That breathe is the Spirit of God given to man, the Spirit is life itself. But the soul is the being itself and it received life, the soul lives on depending if the spirit stays with it. This is where eternity lies, you die good, you live on with God's spirit, you die bad, your soul goes to hell, exclusive of God's spirit.
The Spirit of God is the source of all individual spirits, and He gives life but never diminishes.

Every spirit that exists both in heaven and on Earth, it was the Spirit of God that brought them to existence, and once they become individual spirits they never return to the source of their spirit, but continue to exist as souls or individual spirits.

There was no being before the Spirit of God gave life or spirit to man's lifeless body so that was when man became a being/living soul/individual.

That individual spirit, which came from the Spirit of God is man's soul and it never returns to the Spirit of God just like those of the angels and evil spirits.

For even in death, the individual spirit/soul continues to exist either as the damned in hell, or as the living in heaven.

Soul is the nature of the spirit, and the spirit is the nature of the body.

It's what is in the soul that reflects in the spirit..therefore, the spirit will now reflect it in the body.

“Soul” and “Spirit”—What Do These Terms Really Mean?
Play
Current time 0:00
Duration 0:00
Mute
WHEN you hear the terms “soul” and “spirit,” what comes to your mind? Many believe that these words mean something invisible and immortal that exists inside us. They think that at death this invisible part of a human leaves the body and lives on. Since this belief is so widespread, many are surprised to learn that it is not at all what the Bible teaches. What, then, is the soul, and what is the spirit, according to God’s Word?

“SOUL” AS USED IN THE BIBLE
First, consider the soul. You may remember that the Bible was originally written mainly in Hebrew and Greek. When writing about the soul, the Bible writers used the Hebrew word neʹphesh or the Greek word psy·kheʹ. These two words occur well over 800 times in the Scriptures, and the New World Translation renders them “soul,” either in the main text or in footnotes. When you examine the way “soul” or “souls” is used in the Bible, it becomes evident that this word basically refers to (1) people, (2) animals, or (3) the life that a person or an animal has. Let us consider some scriptures that present these three different senses.

People. “In Noah’s day . . . a few people, that is, eight souls, were carried safely through the water.” (1 Peter 3:20) Here the word “souls” clearly stands for people—Noah, his wife, his three sons, and their wives. Exodus 16:16 mentions instructions given to the Israelites regarding the gathering of manna. They were told to gather it “according to the number of the people [“souls,” footnote]” that each of them had in his tent. So the amount of manna that was gathered was based on the number of people in each family. Some other Biblical examples of the application of “soul” or “souls” to a person or to people are in the footnotes found at Genesis 46:18; Joshua 11:11; Acts 27:37; and Romans 13:1.

Animals. In the Bible’s creation account, we read: “Then God said: ‘Let the waters swarm with living creatures [“souls,” footnote], and let flying creatures fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.’ Then God said: ‘Let the earth bring forth living creatures [“souls,” footnote] according to their kinds, domestic animals and creeping animals and wild animals of the earth according to their kinds.’ And it was so.” (Genesis 1:20, 24) In this passage, fish, domestic animals, and wild animals are all referred to by the same word—“souls.” Birds and other animals are called souls in the footnotes found at Genesis 9:10; Leviticus 11:46; and Numbers 31:28.

Life of a person. Sometimes the word “soul” means the life of a person. Jehovah told Moses: “All the men who were seeking to kill you [“seeking your soul,” footnote] are dead.” (Exodus 4:19) What were Moses’ enemies trying to do? They were seeking to take Moses’ life. Earlier, while Rachel was giving birth to her son Benjamin, “her life was slipping away [“her soul was going out,” footnote].” (Genesis 35:16-19) At that time, Rachel lost her life. Consider also Jesus’ words: “I am the fine shepherd; the fine shepherd surrenders his life [“soul,” footnote] in behalf of the sheep.” (John 10:11) Jesus gave his soul, or life, in behalf of mankind. In these Bible passages, or in the footnotes, the word “soul” clearly refers to the life of a person. You will find more examples of this sense of “soul” either in the text or in the footnotes found at 1 Kings 17:17-23; Matthew 10:39; John 15:13; and Acts 20:10.

A further study of God’s Word will show you that nowhere in the entire Bible are the terms “immortal” or “everlasting” linked with the word “soul.” Instead, the Scriptures state that a soul is mortal, meaning that it dies. (Ezekiel 18:4, 20) Therefore, the Bible calls someone who has died simply a “dead soul.”—Leviticus 21:11, footnote.

THE “SPIRIT” IDENTIFIED
Let us now consider the Bible’s use of the term “spirit.” Some people think that “spirit” is just another word for “soul.” However, that is not the case. The Bible makes clear that “spirit” and “soul” refer to two different things. How do they differ?

Bible writers used the Hebrew word ruʹach or the Greek word pneuʹma when writing about the “spirit.” The Scriptures themselves indicate the meaning of those words. For instance, Psalm 104:29 states: “If you [Jehovah] take away their spirit [ruʹach], they die and return to the dust.” And James 2:26 notes that “the body without spirit [pneuʹma] is dead.” In these verses, then, “spirit” refers to that which gives life to a body. Without spirit, the body is dead. Therefore, in the Bible the word ruʹach is translated not only as “spirit” but also as “force,” or life-force. For example, concerning the Flood in Noah’s day, God said: “I am going to bring floodwaters upon the earth to destroy from under the heavens all flesh that has the breath [ruʹach] of life.” (Genesis 6:17; 7:15, 22) “Spirit” thus refers to an invisible force (the spark of life) that animates all living creatures.

A portable radio without any electrical or battery power source
The soul and the spirit are not the same. The body needs the spirit in much the same way as a radio needs electricity—in order to function. To illustrate this further, think of a portable radio. When you put batteries in a portable radio and turn it on, the electricity stored in the batteries brings the radio to life, so to speak. Without batteries, however, the radio is dead. So is another kind of radio when it is unplugged from an electric outlet. Similarly, the spirit is the force that brings our body to life. Also, like electricity, the spirit has no feeling and cannot think. It is an impersonal force. But without that spirit, or life-force, our bodies “die and return to the dust” as the psalmist stated.

Speaking about man’s death, Ecclesiastes 12:7 states: “The dust [of his body] returns to the earth, just as it was, and the spirit returns to the true God who gave it.” When the spirit, or life-force, leaves the body, the body dies and returns to where it came from—the earth. Comparably, the life-force returns to where it came from—God. (Job 34:14, 15; Psalm 36:9) This does not mean that the life-force actually travels to heaven. Rather, it means that for someone who dies, any hope of future life rests with Jehovah God. His life is in God’s hands, so to speak. Only by God’s power can the spirit, or life-force, be given back so that a person may live again.

How comforting it is to know that this is exactly what God will do for all of those resting in “the memorial tombs”! (John 5:28, 29) At the time of the resurrection, Jehovah will form a new body for a person sleeping in death and bring it to life by putting spirit, or life-force, in it. What a joyful day that will be!

If you would like to learn more about the terms “soul” and “spirit” as used in the Bible, you will find valuable information in the brochure What Happens to Us When We Die? and on pages 375-384 of the book Reasoning From the Scriptures, both published by Jehovah’s Witnesses.

There are two ends: the spiritual end and the physical end. Man is basically a spirit so he can communicate with the spiritual end by default. He also has a physical container, the body, through which he communicates the physical end. The spirit and body are representations (or you can say states) of man's soul. That's why the soul can be regarded as man's consciousness. The person reading this is a soul manifesting in the physical realm through the body. Similarly, your soul can exist as a spirit.

Scriptures said: God breathe in man and he became a living soul. This means that he received the ability to function in both the spiritual and the physical realm. The 'he' there is the soul.
