She sighed. ‘It was either you didn’t get it or you ignored it.’

I was amazed. ‘That can’t be. You only needed me to donate something vital, and I did so, there’s nothing else.’

‘There is. There has always been.’

I opened my mouth in awe again. ‘I can’t believe you. You’re older than me. You were my boss!’

‘Yes, those are facts. They can’t erase the feelings I had and still have for you all the same.’

I shook my head. ‘Well, it’s late. Perhaps, if I had known this before I talked to and married Ruth, it could have worked out. But now, I’m married.’

She nodded. ‘It’s late, but not too late.’

It was my turn to shake my head. She ignored my implied dissension and moved closer to me on the couch.

‘I still have feelings for you, Frank.’

I sighed. ‘But, I’m married now. I believe in fidelity and have never cheated on her.’

‘Does my feeling mean nothing to you?’

Her right hand rested on my laps. I was supposed to shake it off but I couldn’t.

‘There’s already a bond between us, you know.’

I knew she was referring to the baby. ‘Yes, but let’s put that behind us.’

‘But, I can’t. Honestly, Francis, I’ve tried to do that, but I just can’t.’

Maybe she should try more, my mind said.

Before I could say it out, her hand gently rubbed on my thighs.

‘Give it to me as a parting gift,’ she said.

I was puzzled. ‘Give what?’

‘You’re a man and you should know.’

I shook my head slowly. ‘But you know that will not be right, Judith.’

She smiled wanly. ‘Right or not, I want it.’

I sighed again. Her two hands were now on my laps, moving seductively. Maybe there was no harm in doing it just once, my mind thought. She was mature and she didn’t look like the type that would let her tongue loose. Judith appeared to be the discrete type.

She must have sensed my dimming resilience. Her lips came for mine and I could not resist. I found myself responding positively to her overtures. We finally ended up in bed.

Several minutes later, I quickly dressed up as dusk was approaching. Ruth, my darling wife, must not suspect a thing.

‘I’ll be expecting you tomorrow afternoon,’ Judith said, a look of contentment on her face. ‘You will come again, won’t you?’
