Oh really So Doctors are also lab scientists in the UK? They are the midwives as well aren't they? I don't support beating them up, but Nigerian Doctors need to learn that each member of the health care team is trained for that field, and then leave them alone to do their job. They cannot be Jack of all trades.

This is far from what happend in UCTH today. The doctors came into the lab and chased the lab scientists away. Most lab scientist were beaten. Thereafter, the lab scientist took to a peaceful protest to show their anger and humiliation by the doctors. It is wrong that in Nigeria, the doctors want to do the job of a pharmacist, radiographer, lab scientist, optometrist, and even that of a dietician. SMH.

I do not know about heading all departments but the buck stops with the doctor. He's in overall charge of patient care. The doctor faces the coroner's court when things go seriously wrong.

Certainly with Radiology and Pathology, a medical consultant heads those departments. Because they are medical specialties.

A radiographer or lab scientist will not head those departments typically. This does not in anyway undermine the great job lab scientists and radiographers put in daily.

That's where Doctors get it wrong in naija, it's a universal law respect yourself, you are not the head of the hospital you guys are health team and the purpose is to ensure patients are healthy, for your your information a Nurse Was once appointed as the Surgeon general in the US by trump in 2017, you guys act like you own the hospital here in naija instead of working together like an health team, 4 days ago in Kaduna one stupid Consultant told a staff Nurse to sweep the ward imagine, a Registered Nurse for that matter, she was even petition for not sweeping, misplaced priorities, so sweeping is now in Nursing curriculum. All health practitioner knows there boundaries and right in developed countries that's why they barely have issues with one another.

Nobody hate any doctor,the overbearing attitude of the doctors in the medical setting is the problem.how can n why should a medical doctor wants to head the laboratory for goodness sake?,the doctors are naturally the head of the hospital but some departments should be held by specialist in those fields while ultimately been under the command of the doctors creating a seamless working order n relationship but the doctors always want to boss everyone n this has n will continue to cause friction in the medical setting.

Let me give you an example, a lab scientist is trained to run test,with a little background scientific knowledge of the basis of diseases.
A pathologist is a doctor who specializes in laboratory tests with a deep knowledge of clinical basis, signs and symptoms, etc of diseases.
B/w d a tests done by a scientist and a pathologist, which will you consider more reliable?
Do you know sometimes, a patient goes in for surgery, loses blood, then does a test to check d blood level and it comes out higher than d one b4 the surgery and the scientists pushes it out like that to d doctor.Meanwhile all d clinical info is on d request form.Now this error might not be a human error but due to spoilt reagent,equipment etc.
Now a pathologist will likely dismiss d result,collect another sample and repeat d test.
With a knowledge of d foregoing, who should be heading d lab?
Who was d first lab scientist?
Who was d first pharmacist?
All are doctors.

You need to learn a lot. My uncle is a Senior Doctor, a consultant. I once visited him and asked why the so much dispute in the health sector. He simply said the problem is Doctor's greed and lack of respect & team spirit. He said a typical Nigeria Doctor sees him/herself as a ruler. There are many unfair politics played by doctors in the health sector that is not tolerated in the western world. I can't explain it here, just find a honest doctor to explain to you.

You are living in a fool paradise, a pathologist has no business carrying out laboratory tests on any patients but rather interprete lab results and also advised his medical colleagues on treating a special cases associated to his field but what we see in Nigeria is that pathologists want to sign d results he has no input, he want to head a medical laboratory department. Nigeria law make it clear, medical laboratory science is a distinct department and should be headed by a medical laboratory scientist. Doctors should live and let other live here in Nigeria. Enough of incurring into other peoples jurisdiction
