So how about Coca Cola, Guinness, Budweiser spending millions if not billions of dollars on adverts world wide?

Politics is totally different from Business . There are so many potentials and opportunities in advertising with international media

30 seconds advert on CNN should be from $5,000-$8,000 depends on the Prime Time..

Are you not taking Coke or Budweiser here. The man is making sense and you are ranting.

IGNORANCE:
The version of CNN commercials you watch on dstv is different from the one they watch in Europe, America and other parts of the world. So the medium was simply chosen to reach an African audience. CNN also broadcast in other languages other than English and show regional commercials which you do not see because its not for you.
The world is not so global after all.

Uncle Bode George......... You are an elder and you want to allow little children talk to you any how.

CNN....... Nigerians don't watch CNN.

Bode....... Who do you this thing?

A stroke of cane is enough for the wise......
You are on point
They are wise business men to choose to advertise in CNN which have both local and global coverage.
Let Nigeria Media Companies up their work and then compete favourably with these foreign own Media Companies.
Just imagine Dangote taking his advert to NTA
Almost all the banks I have entered all have CNN as their favourite channel, then imagine the number of people watching CNN in daily basics.

But seriously, why do you have problems with companies that are going global?

Black man does not like to see his fellow black man progress. A crab mentality.

In reality the adverts are localised to certain regions. You pay for higher packages if you want your business to reach a wider audience. Let's say they have the following

1. National coverage - Nigeria alone

2. Regional coverage - West African subregion (you can see Ghanaian ads from

3. Multiregional coverage - Entire Africa, (reason why you sometimes see some Kenyan adverts like Mpessa even while viewing from Nigeria)

4. International coverage - worldwide

5. Custom - you select the regions you want your business to be advertised.

In all things, it is business, your money does the talking.

Na wa for you. Those companies you mentioned are not local brands but multinational and owned by foreigners. He is speaking about Nigerian owned brands don't you get the drill.

Daddy Bode, very wrong statement sir! What you need to know is that the CNN you watch here is different from the CNN they watch in America. The one you watch is CNN Africa which has a different content specially put together for African viewers.

Secondly, the viewership of this CNN is more than any local tv, so it's economical and achieves the target if adverts are put on platforms like CNN.

Doesn't he know that advertising in CNN particularly could boost brands to Nigerians abroad too. Look at this scenario: A Nigerian living abroad that do watch CNN will watch advertisement of GLO and probably would love it, whenever he comes to Nigeria for business or personal, he would want to buy sim card to use temporarily, he would definitely go for GLO straight up particularly because of the great advertisement he watched when he was abroad.

Temidayo Akinsuyi, Lagos

Owners and managers of Nigeria-domiciled companies whose products and services are meant for Nigerian consumption but are being advertised on expensive foreign media such as CNN and others have been described as shameless people on mere ego trip.

Such companies must restrict their advertisements to local media and stop frittering away money in the names of adverts to foreign media such as Cable News Network (CNN).
Speaking with Daily Independent in Lagos on Thursday, Chief Olabode George, a former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said paying huge amounts in advertising local brands on international media does not make any economic, human or political sense.
According to George, some companies guilty of this are ZenithBank, Dangote and Globacom network.

He argued that many of the adverts which are being broadcast up to 10 times daily where people have no need for them is simply an ego trip that must be stopped.
“ Every day, go to see CNN, you see three major Nigerian companies advertising. You see them showing juju music adverts on CNN advertising Globacom.

“What has Globacom advert got to do with CNN that is being shown all over the world? Are they using Glo network in Europe or South America?”
“ If these adverts are being shown on local television stations, I can understand. I was with my friend in Europe and he showed me Glo advert on CNN. Also, Aliko Dangote whose products are being consumed here will be advertising on CNN a minimum of 10 times a day.

“The same also applies to Zenith Bank. These are shameless people.
“Who are they trying to impress? That money they are throwing at CNN in the name of needless adverts will send a lot of younger people into good lives here in Nigeria either through job creation, or support for education or skills acquisition”.
“Those adverts on CNN is a waste of money because that money they are frittering away was generated here in Nigeria. It’s so demeaning. It doesn’t make any economic, political or human sense. What is FIRS doing on this? Why can’t Fowler take action? What is CBN doing about this? For all these adverts, do you think they pay in Naira?”
According to George, despite having a capital base that is bigger than all Nigerian banks combined, ABSA bank in South Africa does not run adverts on CNN or other foreign media like Nigerian banks.
He urged the federal government to tax heavily companies who patronise foreign media for adverts, saying the money generated from the taxes should be used in building skill acquisition centres all over the country.
“ ABSA bank in South Africa, their capital base is bigger than all our banks in Nigeria put together. Have you seen them running adverts on CNN? What is going on here? What is this ego trip for nothing? Are we the only country in the world?”

“Instead of wasting this money on needless adverts on CNN, they should use this money to get a 5G network and improve the useless services we are getting. I have tried to call the owner that what has these adverts got to do with the whites that you are showing it on CNN and everybody sees it all over the world, even where the network is not being used? Do they have the network there?”

“If they don’t know what to do with the money, they should return it to the government to set up things of benefits for the people in the name of the donor organisation.

“The government must clamp down on them. if they spend one dollar for any advert on international media, another extra dollar will go to supporting skill acquisition in Nigeria”.
“The government must enforce it. That money they are throwing away in the name of foreign adverts are generated in this country” he posited.

The Nigerian living in America, viewing CNN will not see that Globacom advert if Glo did not pay for the "International package" There are thousands of American businesses that would use that airtime for adverts.

To those who quoted and who might intend to quote, are you guys saying a Chinese man coming to Nigeria for the first time and saw Zenith bank adverts on CNN wont first check the banks out upon reaching Nigeria?

Or probably Dangote only limited his business partnership strictly to Only Nigerians or perhaps Africa.

Is like questioning a Nigerian why buying Facebook likes.. Btw 100k likes on Facebook should cost like $5,000.

This is business and not meant for local business man that cant afford it

Btw, what's the total coverage of all the Nigeria media?
poor example

Cocacola is a global brand, present in virtually every nation in the world. So, the adverts on foreign stations are valid.

Dangote and co don't have such markets.

I don't necessarily agree with Bode George though

Coca-Cola, Budweiser, Guinness etc are all foreign brands consume if not in all the countries of the world. Don't compare them with these local brands.

Bode George should ask questions before criticising what he does not understand. He is a politician and not a businessman. The companies in question have international operations. The visibility they get from the adverts also helps them with access to cheaper foreign capital.

I thought this man had sense, even a school drop-out will not think this way, let me educate him on the little I about having your content aired across the boarders of your domicile (1) CNN does not filter their news content like 9ja, (2) Go ask around and you will notice that the above companies mentioned are been used mostly by foreigners anytime they enter the country (3) for your content to go across d boarders, means you are doing well enough to have the money for such advert outside your domain (4) Doest he know the work force of those companies he mentioned above. Please Chief Olabode George, a former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) what impact have you created in your state, talk more of your local government.

It's so sad this is coming from Sir Bode. His arguments are baseless and proves he doesn't understand much about media marketing and brand targeting. When you target international consumers it simply makes your brand international and the international consumers will pay in hundred folds of what you're offering them.

Even me that I'm still an upcoming company I do target South Africa, Ghana, USA, Canada, Nigeria and Uk

It's amazing how dull you sound with this your post. Coca Cola, Guinness and Budweiser global multinational brands whose products are in demand and consumed across the length and breadth of this world. Why are you comparing these Nigerian companies with those corporate leviathans?
It is imperative that those global brands advertise on the biggest networks like CNN.
But these three Nigerian companies in question have 99.99% of their consumers in Nigeria - so what's the need for them to pay such massive amounts of money to advertise to other continents that really don't know or have even heard of them?
