Tomatoes, Onions, assorted type of pepper, goats and cattle are entering freely through borders with their brotherhood bond up North.

What concerns Niger with border closure? Niger is only transit route as an AREWA land with easy access to their AREWA brothers in Nigeria. Maryam Abacha used Nigerian money to build University in Niger, Rabiu Kwankwaso as a serving governor of Kano State built institution in Niger Republic. We have so many of them with interests there. Using Buhari name to canvass for votes in Niger Republic by politicians in Niger Republic or invitation of Niger Republic governor(s) to a political campaign in Nigeria a sovereign state shows the Arewa bond and brotherhood. Maina is not the only Nigerian Arewa with assets built with stolen Nigerian money in Niger. There many of them.

I don't know how many ships berth in Niger or Chad per months compared to weekly traffic at Benin & Togo ports. The traffic at one port alone in Ghana is something else. The border closure is just Benin border closure only.

These are landlocked countries and amount of smuggled goods that enter Nigeria from those points are much less than from Benin Republic. They dont have ports to bring in rice that will end up in Nigeria. And it doesn't make economic sense to transport smuggled goods from Benin to Chad/Niger and then into Nigeria. Please lets argue with sense and not with sentiments or ethnicity.

They might have a thoroughfare into the country.

If they change their goods from Tomatoes to Grenades, and they change their route and destination to Sambisa forest.

Borders are not often closed whenever BH is being supplied arms.
My two cents.

I am not a buharist, but I don't care if the tomatoes and all produce from Benin republic rot. I care first about life in Nigeria, all these neighbouring countries don't appreciate us. What do they buy from us? We don't need to import from Benin what they imported. If we have to import, we should do it directly with the primary producing country

That begs the question, is our import duty to high that importers go through Benin?

anyway I just hope when the price Start to stabilize , they don't reopen the borders

It is not at the expense of non-farmers really. The advantages of the border closure are listed below:

1. More money that would have exited our economy would stay in Nigeria hence we have more liquidity; it is akin to your blood staying in your body instead of leaking out

2. Since the money you are paying farmers now goes to Nigerians, there will be a positive improvement in the GDP and Per Capita Income

3. The good prices that farmers earn on their produce in Nigeria would attract more people into farming and other spin off jobs, thereby increasing employment opportunities.

4. As the farmers and other people employed in the agric value chain earn more money they become less dependent on others for handouts

5. As the prices attract more people into farming and other agric value chain jobs, the supply will increase and the prices will keep falling until equilibrium between demand and supply is reached.

the local farmers and manufacturers of local rice re gaining.. they re getting patronage and they re smiling to the bank.
Customs made 300b within 2 months it is part of border closure effect.

Nigeria petrol consumption drop by 8millions litres meaning we re saving subsidy funds on 8millions litres.and more than enough petrol to go round

Many nigerians and stakeholders re now actively participating in rice cultivation which we improve self sufficiency in near future

Thumbs up

No one deserves to be a victim. Farmers are as much deserving of value for their work as workers desire cheap food.
Let's hope for balance eventually.

Competition and more supply will drive down the prices.

No amount of emotional blackmail will make Nigeria open the border.
Benin should diversify their economy if they can't get it right .only land border re closed. They can export by air or water legitimately.

Niger state + jigawa+ kwara + plateau all together re bigger than benin republic.

It is better to enrich our local farmer selling 50kg rice 20k than buying cheaply from foreigners and killing our own farmers effort.

The way some nigerians cry of bag rice you will think they buy bag of rice everyday or their families consume bag of rice everyday.

An average Nigerian family cannot finish 1bag of rice in 1 monthcheesycheesy

Lol. Bro forget that thing. Who told you that the N20k rice we buy is locally produced? You will be surprised to learn that smuggling is worse now.
Re: Border Closure: Rotten Tomatoes Line Roads In Benin Republic (Photos) by 9jatriot(m): 4:09pm On Oct 14, 2019
@Bolded, Benin deliberately made their import duties even for goods they do not use just to make it easy for importers to use their port. They then turn a blind eye when these same goods move into Nigeria. How many cars they de buy for the country when they go get so many car dealers?

I'm in support of the border closure but the ones buying a Cup of rice daily are suffering more than the ones buying bags, coz the prices are more expensive. If the price of a bag goes down the, the "1 cup" consumers too will benefit. I can always complain even if I'm buying a pinch.

Is it an economic sense to transport tomatoes, onions and peppers to Lagos and Ibadan from Niger & Chad? It is an economic sense to transport Rams, goats & cattle from Niger & Chad to Lagos & Ibadan during sallah but it is good for tomatoes and agricultural products to get rotten at Cotonou . I am sentimental but it is not a sentiment for Arewa people in Nigeria to protect the survival of their Arewa brothers in Chad & Niger.

Sad we are doing this to ourselves as fellow African countries and even sadder that the leadership in Benin republic are not even exploring the option to start exporting this to other countries ...must it come to Nigeria? If Nigeria does not want you, go elsewhere naaa

Every policy of govt must have a direct, tangible positive impact.......that is; it must be something you can experience easily and directly without any news or propaganda. So if price of bag of rice was N8000 for 50kg under Jonathan who was allegedly corrupt, then the entry of a new government of change must bring something better in terms of price. The aim of any policy is to make life easier of the masses........the N30k minimum wage group and lesser earners.

If we continually bring policies that bring more hardship then we cannot be said to be performing or be good government..

The so called tremendous revenues claimed to have been made by Customs and other agencies cannot ring true because we have borrowed more money than pre 2015...infact thrice. How can somebody who suddenly stars to earn more be owing more or suffering more than when he was earning peanuts??

The masses of Nigeria do not care about whether rice or tomatoes is rotten in Benin republic...they just want performance that would make things cheaper then when the "corrupt" people were in power pre 2015..

People are tired of these stories

Cos all I see is inflation and famine.
It is not about you, its about the country. Go and farm or brace up for hunger. Farmers are working hard to produce rice that no one wants to buy. We can't open our borders for every Tom Dick and Harry to enter and exit at will.

Even economically integrated regions like the EU have strict laws governing movement of products across borders.
