babaolofin: These are landlocked countries and amount of smuggled goods that enter Nigeria from those points are much less than from Benin Republic. They dont have ports to bring in rice that will end up in Nigeria. And it doesn't make economic sense to transport smuggled goods from Benin to Chad/Niger and then into Nigeria. Please lets argue with sense and not with sentiments or ethnicity. 6 Likes 2 Shares |

maxiflexy:I am not a buharist, but I don't care if the tomatoes and all produce from Benin republic rot. I care first about life in Nigeria, all these neighbouring countries don't appreciate us. What do they buy from us? We don't need to import from Benin what they imported. If we have to import, we should do it directly with the primary producing country That begs the question, is our import duty to high that importers go through Benin? 1 Like |

majamajic: It is not at the expense of non-farmers really. The advantages of the border closure are listed below: 1. More money that would have exited our economy would stay in Nigeria hence we have more liquidity; it is akin to your blood staying in your body instead of leaking out 2. Since the money you are paying farmers now goes to Nigerians, there will be a positive improvement in the GDP and Per Capita Income 3. The good prices that farmers earn on their produce in Nigeria would attract more people into farming and other spin off jobs, thereby increasing employment opportunities. 4. As the farmers and other people employed in the agric value chain earn more money they become less dependent on others for handouts 5. As the prices attract more people into farming and other agric value chain jobs, the supply will increase and the prices will keep falling until equilibrium between demand and supply is reached. 4 Likes 3 Shares |

@Bolded, Benin deliberately made their import duties even for goods they do not use just to make it easy for importers to use their port. They then turn a blind eye when these same goods move into Nigeria. How many cars they de buy for the country when they go get so many car dealers? xpool: |

ORIENTATION101:I'm in support of the border closure but the ones buying a Cup of rice daily are suffering more than the ones buying bags, coz the prices are more expensive. If the price of a bag goes down the, the "1 cup" consumers too will benefit. I can always complain even if I'm buying a pinch. |

ajl: Is it an economic sense to transport tomatoes, onions and peppers to Lagos and Ibadan from Niger & Chad? It is an economic sense to transport Rams, goats & cattle from Niger & Chad to Lagos & Ibadan during sallah but it is good for tomatoes and agricultural products to get rotten at Cotonou . I am sentimental but it is not a sentiment for Arewa people in Nigeria to protect the survival of their Arewa brothers in Chad & Niger. |

Sad we are doing this to ourselves as fellow African countries and even sadder that the leadership in Benin republic are not even exploring the option to start exporting this to other countries ...must it come to Nigeria? If Nigeria does not want you, go elsewhere naaa maxiflexy: 1 Like |

Every policy of govt must have a direct, tangible positive impact.......that is; it must be something you can experience easily and directly without any news or propaganda. So if price of bag of rice was N8000 for 50kg under Jonathan who was allegedly corrupt, then the entry of a new government of change must bring something better in terms of price. The aim of any policy is to make life easier of the masses........the N30k minimum wage group and lesser earners. If we continually bring policies that bring more hardship then we cannot be said to be performing or be good government.. The so called tremendous revenues claimed to have been made by Customs and other agencies cannot ring true because we have borrowed more money than pre 2015...infact thrice. How can somebody who suddenly stars to earn more be owing more or suffering more than when he was earning peanuts?? The masses of Nigeria do not care about whether rice or tomatoes is rotten in Benin republic...they just want performance that would make things cheaper then when the "corrupt" people were in power pre 2015.. People are tired of these stories |
