In many African cultures the bride price remains essential traditional obligation towards the contract of marriage.
Some people have however come against bride price. Some say it is like trading off the bride. Nigerian foremost feminist writer Chimamanda Adichie recently reiterated that she was not a fan of it .

What do you think? Do you believe the bride price is still relevant in the contemporary world?

Why should it not be relevant while you people are encouraging white wedding.

I feel it's very relevant. But it shouldn't be an extortion as seen some palance. it should be more symbolic than a means to gather some cash. I could collect a painting as bride price.

Your traditions and culture has an expiring date but you keep on promoting Western cultures....
We are all hypocrites in Africa.

When you are set to marry, ask your intending inlaws. They should be able to give you an answer.

Culture is dynamic, not static. That aspect should be scrapped.

I personally feel it's not relevant.the essence of brideprice in the first place was so that the family of the bride can be sure that the groom can take good care of the bride, but now most women can take care of themselves comfortably.

But when I told my mum the same thing I just typed up,let's just say she wasn't too happy with me for sometime grin grin grin.asking me why am I cursing myself lipsrsealed

Y bother to get married at all.

I mean, white wedding, reception and co.

Y not just get pregnant and move in with the man, if he want to share accomodation with u?

Then again, your both Yoruba women, in your culture the bride shoulder the marriage expenses. That is y u say that.

In other culture, it is the Groom, that shoulder the cost of his marriage.

So your grand parents marriages are not properly conducted and blessed by Almighty and they stayed long in marriage more than your sanctuary wedding.
Make una stop all this nonsense in name of religion madness, na only una sabi God?

Where I came from, they don't collect bride price because they're not selling their daughter out to you.
