I saw a tweet (on twitter) from a certain Ronald Nzimora and later supported by his friend, Hon. Akin Alabi as regards the above subject (as attached).

Thus, I'm compelled to ask if it's actually right for a WIFE to own properties in HER name.

1. What if the wife is richer and kept everything in her name. Don't you feel the husband will feel 'detached' and maybe unhappy?

2. What if the husband is richer and kept all the properties in his name. Don't you feel the wife will feel 'detached' and maybe unhappy?

PS. My wife and I work, and are financially independent of each other. She's been supportive
though and we buy properties in our names, e.g. Mr Kenneth Cole and Mrs Grace Cole. This is rational and not abnormal.

Well... It depends on the agreement between us. If he buys a property first and choose to put his name only, when I buy mine, it will definitely have my name ONLY.
But if I'm included as a co-owner, of course we can co-own mine too.

In a situation where I get a property before him, i will add his name to all papers and if he can't do the same when he buys his, then I might not wait for the next hour to remove his name from documents of my property. Since we both wants to be petty.

But really, regardless of whose money is/was used in buying a property, once we are married all funds/properties belongs to US.

And i won't understand why most ladies(both married and single) do lie to their spouse to collect money. I mean if your spouse go bankruptcy you will suffer the loss together and if there is boom you will enjoy it together. So why do you have to lie?

What's the point of all these pointless arguments on nairaland especially all these husband wife etc etc community marriage back and forths? There's one currently ongoing where someone who regularly posts what can be considered pornographic photos, is arguing the man knows better when it comes to advice. If it were a woman or a wife posting photos of men's private parts at random intervals, would he say the same thing about her reasoning process?

In my opinion, any wealth or property acquired by Nigerians should be donated to the state or a religious organization after the owner has had their fill of it.

There is no point inheriting unnecessary trouble in the name of property, even while the owner is actively owning the property na wahala every time, what Nigerians should try to do is encourage the government to provide for it's citizens so they don't need to fight over property and material things.

No offence to the people debating, it's just that Nigerians do not listen to beneficial advice, they only want advice that causes friction and scattering.

For the wives, no matter any property involved, do not plan for property that wasn't there when you got married, or which doesn't involve you. As long as you did not contribute over 90% to the purchase, ignore it.

Just my thoughts, I could be wrong.

I'm just not as property oriented as others, not being a typical Nigerian. I think property ownership should be one, not all, of the things that make for a sense of accomplishment and I am annoyed when people (Nigerians) start acting up as usual over it. It's good to be fulfilled (the Nigerian dream is to own property) but not at the expense of your well being and the well being of others around you.

Also why I cautioned someone the other day who went bananas over a random topic about walking away during stress, he interpreted that to mean destroy everything in sight rather than let a woman have it. What the heck?

Women who are rich enough to own property should of course make sure their kids are cared for, but that doesn't have to be in the form of leaving them property although it's the usual way.

The world's understanding of marriage today is very scary. If people go into a union with the intent that there'd be trouble, then it doesn't make sense at all, not in any way.

IT DOES NOT DEPEND ON AGREEMENT. By default, what a man owns belongs to his immediate family (wife and kids) and by default the same should apply to women. The idea of family members will always be secondary.

If a man solely buys a property in his name just because IT IS HIS MONEY, then there's a problem already because the world will ask questions when his wife does same.

Bulk of these problems which shouldn't be a big deal is as a result of lack of proper or no counseling. Marriage, today, is no longer an institution but a contract where both parties just while away time, waiting for the day issues would come and one or both will bail.

This, right here, is one of the problems and mindset people take into marriage. If you have already reserved a space to be 'petty' this way instead of looking for someone who shares the whole idea of 'what belongs to you belongs to us', I'd say it is better to stay away from marriage because problems will start the very moment you look out for those receipts and don't find your name.

The family section is a toxic place brimming with masculists/meninists and feminists. You barely read one tale about a happy home there. Rather, it is one problem or the other.

My point is, your mindset reveals you have a space already reserved for 'wàhálà', particularly when your other half buys something solely in his name. Before it gets to that point, spend more time looking/talking for/about these stuff prior to marriage.

If you sit a male down and he tells you that he sees no reason why he should buy properties in both your names, then by all means bail or walk away to avoid future problems.

The idea of doing things seperately, particularly property related voids marriage design. I know some would claim 'anything can happen tomorrow'. The idea of 'anything can happen' in itself gives an idea that they are going into a lifetime commitment with a higher probability of bailing tomorrow.

I sincerely wonder what people discuss in courtship these days.

Lol cheesy

Men own your properties in your name.
Women own your properties in your name.

As fair & gender-equal as this concept seems, guess which 'oppressed' gender is still going to be against it.

Ikenna and Akin just woke up to look for trouble. grin

I think you're right. Just that it doesn't have to be on agreement. Marriage itself is an agreement, ordinarily. It could just be spontaneous, i.e. whatever 'foundation' the first 'buyer' lays, can determine the next course of action. But again, what if either party didn't do deliberately but out of ignorance

Well said IMO. Marriage nowadays is like a contract. It's sad.

That’s no marriage. Marriage is when two become one in all.
As a Christian, marriage is symbolic for God’s perfect plan towards humanity. The reconciliation of the bride and groom, to glorify his name. This is demonstrated by the love of Christ who redeemed mankind to glorify him. The template is very clear, Christ is the groom and this church is the bride which he loves and would present without blemish to God.
In a Christian marriage, the wife ought to submit to the husband in all things and the husband should love the wife as Christ loves the church.
There is no place for competition, strive and individuality in marriage. When you begin to see yourselves as one, the Holy Spirit establishes divine synergy in your marriage to even do more.
Pray before you go into marriage.

It depends on the mindset of the couple and a lot of other factors. So there isn't really a one-size-fits-all to the question. Intending couples are at liberty to discuss and agree on how they will want to handle such issues in their future home.
Left to me, my properties and my wife's own will be registered jointly in our names, if not for anything but for the sake of the children we both have.
It is not like one can carry his/her property to the grave.

Well, yes!

In ideal situations....
Woman can own properties
Woman can write their own wills.
Woman can build business empires etc

But in Nigeria today, many families now are only supported by one income - usually the man's. Many women in Nigeria are not financially independent. How can she write will? What will she will? The women lack lack funds to get their lives all together sef, not to talk of will.

Also, the typical African man has a huge ego! That needs to be massaged by the woman that depends on him for her survival. So he will put up a fight if he senses his “power” is about to be taken away from him.

The men thrive on “submission”. A will-writing woman is definitely not “submissive” cheesy

Yes and No. it depends on the circumstances and the reason she’s doing it. Smtmes it’s not about not trusting u bt protecting and securing herself and kids against in-laws invasions in future. I think

In this part of the world in-laws encroach alot into their siblings property smtmes for good and other times for bad depending on the type of wife or in-laws in question.
