1. Inasmuch as air pressure changes can account for this, but the effect is minimal especially under atmospheric pressure. 2. This effect can also be observed when your neighbour upstairs bangs his door, which suggests that air pressure changes is not the absolute cause. 3. From my observation, the absolute cause is the energy transference across the structure. This transferred energy vibrates not just the doors but also the walls but because the doors have hinges, they *shake* as your young inquisitive nephew correctly noticed. |

It is sound wave. Any geophysicist will understand. When an impact is made by either opening or closing a door, acoustic energy is generated and travels through all d media around which in this case commonly solid, water and air depending on elastic property of each medium. The wave is polarized in d solid as shear and compressional but only the later occurs in d fluid. This can be likened to micro seismic energy (micro quake) impact in d building. |

Wave from the opened door as well as the vacuum we create when we open a door tend to shake adjoining windows and doors... |

It's just the VACUM Effects of Air... |
Re: What Makes A Door Shake When Another Is Opened Or Closed? by Nobody: 10:47am On Nov 13, 2019 |
Two things could be responsible for this. The first possibility is that the first door is closed with enough force for vibration to travel through the walls to the second door. Because the door isn't solid, the vibration can be sensed there as it moves a tiny bit on the hinges. The second is it is just a change in air pressure. Depending on how well the room is sealed, closing or opening a door can increase or decrease the pressure. Depending on how well the other door is hung, this can cause the door to move slightly Credit: Reddit |

Go and read about "conventional current". The passage of air from an empty place or space. This will make you understand why. Why you open then door, air comes in. And when you close it back, part of the air try to exit the room according to how fast you slammed the door. If the windows are also closed, air struggles more trying to exit the door because conventional current has been hindered. This caused the door, the exiting air and the wall to create a vibration on other doors of the house. Mind you, the closed window of the said room vibrates more than any other part of the house because it serve as the first to be hit with the wanting to escape air by means of conventional current. |

Physics explains that. Resonance. And it's not just vibration through the solid concrete of the walls alone that can do that, air pressure changes in the room is also capable of doing that too. You open a window, and the door opens or closes depending on installation. UrVillagePpl: |
Re: What Makes A Door Shake When Another Is Opened Or Closed? by ishmaelistic: 10:58am On Nov 13, 2019 |
Simply it has to do with the vibration of molecules that are present in the material (concrete) of the wall in the house. This only happens when you close or open the door or window with a little force. The action no matter how little it is, send a corespondent force (vibration) through out the walls of the house. Since the doors and windows are all connected to the walls, they will vibrate also depending on the amount of force exerted from the starting point. This force will travel app through the wall till the force peter out. That is why even when your neighbors ' doors that are attached to the same wall with yours are affected, you will also feel the impact on your doors and windows. Note: it is not only the doors and windows that are affect, if you watch the picture frames, wall clock and calendars, you will notice that they equally vibrate. Thank you. |

It’s air pressure. |
Re: What Makes A Door Shake When Another Is Opened Or Closed? by benchux(m): 11:00am On Nov 13, 2019 |
It is obeying one of Newton's Laws of Motion, precisely the third law which states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Formally stated, Newton's third law is: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. The statement means that in every interaction, there is a pair of forces acting on the two interacting objects. The size of the forces on the first object equals the size of the force on the second object. When you open one door, the opening action of that door leads to an equal and opposite reaction in nearby doors, thereby causing them nearby door to vibrate. Please I want to ask a question, What is the synergy between doors that make the door shake or open (if properly not close). This happens whenever a door is shut or open and as a result, the other doors tend to make a sound (even though they are farther apart). Asking Google would have been a good option but don’t even know the question to ask. A minor who happens to be my nephew keeps asking me this question and considering the fact that I do not know I always tell him it’s a normal thing and immediately send him away Just a moment ago, I gave him the same reply when he asked me the question. But this time around it increased my curiosity of wanting to know the science behind it. So Nairalanders over to you.... [/quote] |
Re: What Makes A Door Shake When Another Is Opened Or Closed? by Aspiringstudent: 11:00am On Nov 13, 2019 |
i am not a science student but i have at least two theories to answer your question. (1)vibration -- everything in the house in terms of construction is connected to each other so when you close the door in an ungentle manner there will be definitly vibration due to the harsh nature of closing the door. On vibration again ,another possibility is sound wave ,i observe things around me in a scientific way and i can tell you some sound can make other things shift , i was watching a movie and at a point the cover of a my worn out stainless cup shakes "the tip" ,i was surprised ,i repeat the part and same thing happened ,i ended up googling for over 1 hour on sound waves. if you have closed the door in a gentle manner without sound the other one will never vibrate.... (2)Air pressure --- the space between the first door and the second one is called vacuum with many leakages which are ceiling ,underneath the closed and open door ,even the key holes etc, so what happens now is when you close the door so fast you pressurise the room which can cause everything to want to fall apart but they are too strong for that,so the other door even when closed can still shake when touched, everybody will agree with that , the sound you hear when you close the first door in an uncalming way will definately cause the other door to draw due to the air drag from the closed one ,damn what i have in my head explains better than my words lol. a syringe with 2 other intentionally digged holes will still draw from the default hole if it happens so fast .chaiii the part of a syringe that you draw is the door youre closing ,the inside where you draw that liquid to is the vacuum and its the passage in your house, the intentionnally digged hole are the tiny leakages in your house like the ceiling ,key holes and underneath the doors ,like they are leakages to the outside world,so the sucktion you will get in a syringe with hole if you do it very fast is the attempted suction at the other door . i am 100% sure of what i am saying. |

UrVillagePpl:It's air pressure. A room is filled with air. When you open or close a door, you either increase or decrease the pressure in the room, the pressure in turn pulls or pushes anything lighter than the amount of the pressure. A sheet of paper will also move if in such room 2 Likes |

Contraction and expansion when doors are open and shut. it's always occur in non frame structures or when there are no roof beams to make the building rigid |
