Fresh graduates should acquire as much professional skills as possible, get certified... Maybe an MSc and network with those in the correadors of power.

The best answer I read so far. Meanwhile, those of us who are (certified) project manager find it difficult to get a well paid job, as a matter of fact, I haven't got any with mine.
royalads:
My advice to any fresh graduate is to get certifications. Go get real certifications. I cannot overemphasize the importance of getting certifications. My friends who are HR managers in big Companies tell me they have vacancies. Plenty lot of them. But they rarely get people with the required certifications and couple of years of experience to take them up. For instance, there is a very high demand for Business analysts, HR analysts and Managers and Project managers with CIPM or love-vendor, PRINCE2 or SIGMA. These certifications don't come cheap but it sets you ahead of others. Also, the startup pay for them is not bad too.

Hello i just graduated from the University, i need advice from experienced people.
To the experienced peoplewhat did you do when you graduated?

The era of graduate jobs has gone for ever, in fact abroad many top organisations do not require college degrees to give employment. So what these organisations need are skilled workers, so what you need is a skill. Decide on an industry you want to build a career on and get the necessary skills.

I guess you haven't been drafted for youth service, if that is the case, you are lucky cos you got a year to developing a skill coupled with the government paying your bills. If you can influence your youth service posting to an organisation that gives you the opportunity to develop your skills that will enhance the learning process. Another thing you need is discipline, decide on the skill and stay focused on developing the skill no side journey, no jumping into the new trend, focus.

There are many platforms available online to learn skills edx, Coursera, udemy etc. The information is available it's left for you to do the work.

Finally when choosing a skill ensure that it projects towards the future, the world is very dynamic, don't go learn skills that won't be relevant in 5years.

Welcome to the skilled economy, I wish you all the best in the journey

My guy you need skills asap

I will strongly advise you learn IT skills - programming will be good and if you can afford it CCNA, programing is what saved my life, it's the reason why i am alive and balling, i got a job with a reputable IT firm before finishing my service and when there was mass layoff in my place i got another job within same month with plenty other offers i turned down, when people hear my pay they tend not to believe it

All my friends that are not into IT are still on the street getting insulted with 25k, 40k jobs even the one that attended private school while my other programmer friend is even better than me

The street is tough my brother, no one cares, everyone expects from you, even your parent will stylishly start nagging about food, something they've been doing since your birth but now it will be a big deal to them

This country and society is of no help unless you have something doing you will be tempted with all sort of vice, don't wait till you become desperate, start now
Thanks a lot for this info. Can I ask the programming language you learnt or is CCNA a form of language. Also, how much did you spend, and can you recommend any good organisation that can train me. I will be going for my NYSC soon. Thanks.

Haba... In 2019 see the question this one is asking.

Gbe body eh joor

How can just be trying to wake up

So with all that is happening in Nigeria you can't grasp that self employment is the way? Why then did you go to school.... I tire for u o.

Is your destiny every body's destiny, why are you asking everybody.... Are we the ones who sent you to school?

Oga pursue your dreams. Stay woke and hustle.

After school is hustle.

This is one mistake most graduates do make. They will wait till they graduate before deciding on what to do.
What stops you all from starting right in school.

BTW in anything you want to venture into please don't spend all your money searching for jobs, make sure you spend wisely. Best of luck

It's best to hit the ground running, these are thoughts you should have already considered while in school. First of all the Nigeria of today is filled with so much uncertainty and employment is not easy to come by. My advice is to aquire useful skills in what you are interested in. This is because you'll easily fit in what you are interested in. Secondly, consider entrepreneurship after getting skills. This will enable you stay afloat if you are still interested in job hunting. I believe once your parents have seen you through University, you should be able to make use of your degree to take care of yourself and not depend on others. Good luck

Which body gives certification in PMP? I got one during my service year from British Project Management Academy. Don't know if it is recognized as I'm yet to get any opportunity with it and in dire need of experience.

Business Analysts and HR Analysts.

Tell your friend that his organization are not yet ready to employ.

Nigeria has over 200 million people and you are searching for experienced hires in target specific fields and they haven't visited LinkedIn and made use of the search box and key words to find what they want. Companies from abroad even get nigerian staff same way

Or must there be certification as you mentioned ? Certification doesn't get the job done. That's why I like Oyibo.

Depends on your field of study bro. Those in IT would sign up for CCNA/CCNP, Web development, programming, etc. Engineers would sign up for COREN, NSE, (maybe) NEBOSH, Professional welding, etc.
