STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE

SOWORE: BETWEEN FACTS AND FICTION

The Presidency notes some of the insinuations in the media about the arrest by the Department of State Services (DSS) of the agitator, Omoyele Sowore.

The DSS does not necessarily need the permission of the Presidency in all cases to carry out its essential responsibilities that are laid down in the Nigerian Constitution – which was the foundation for the restoration of democracy in our country in 1999.

However, it should not surprise anyone who has followed his actions and words that Sowore is a person of interest to the DSS.

Sowore called for a revolution to overthrow the democratically elected government of Nigeria.

He did so on television, and from a privileged position as the owner of a widely read digital newspaper run from the United States of America.

He founded an organisation, Revolution Now, to launch, in their own words, “Days of Rage”, with the publicised purpose of fomenting mass civil unrest and the elected administration’s overthrow.

No government will allow anybody to openly call for destabilization in the country and do nothing.

Mr. Sowore is no ordinary citizen expressing his views freely on social media and the internet.

He was a presidential candidate himself, who ran – and lost – as the flag bearer of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the February 23 general elections.

Nigeria's democracy was a long time in the making, and was achieved after decades of often harsh, military-led overthrows of government: the kind of situation Sowore was advocating.

To believe in and desire armed revolution is not normal amongst 'human rights activists', as Sowore has been incorrectly described.

Again, it is no surprise that he should be a person of interest to the DSS.

Nigeria is already dealing with an insurgency that has left millions of people displaced and desperate in the northeastern region of our country.

The Boko Haram militants, who are behind the violence, also fancy themselves to be fighting for some sort of revolution.

Nigerians do not need another spate of lawlessness and loss of lives all in the name of 'revolution', especially not one that is orchestrated by a man who makes his home in far away New York – and who can easily disappear and leave behind whatever instability he intends to cause, to wit, Nnamdi Kanu.

This is a matter for the DSS, acting under its powers.

Sowore's mistake was contesting to be the president, after losing he start forming revolutionist. Activists shouldn't muddle with Politics. If he had won the election, he wouldn't have tot of revolution. No country would allow that. But the way the present government are handling this matter isn't the way to go.

All this one they're saying is just opats. He called for a revolution. Yes we know. Do they want to now sit as prosecutor and judge in their own case? The matter is in court for adjudication on whether that amounts to treason and he hasn't been declared guilty yet. All the 'submissions' they are making in the press release can only be made in court. Yet the DSS have decided that the rule of law should only be followed when it suits them. Whenever an order is made that they don't like they flout it or find a way to pervert it or tell lies. And they want the rest of the country to sit and cross their feet while they do all this? They should GTFO.

Is that why DSS /presidency can not obey simple law order again. Its crystal clear you are just against any strong opposition. You were OK with PDP style opposition because you know you can always use corruption allegations to slience them. This worthy opposition is a threat to you

This is so unintelligent as it doesn't address the reason why the court was the right venue to stage the drama of the absurd that took place, making Nigeria look like a zoo before the international community. This is so unprecedented.

This explanation by Garba is as unintelligent as the explanation provided by DSS for not realising Sowore earlier saying that he might be KNOCKED DOWN by a vehicle. Is he a baby and is it their knocking down?

Who wrote this script? it can't be buahari, first and foremost I am not a member or in any anyway affiliate to sawore but truth must be told, when sawore wanted to start his protest he named it revolution now and orchestrated the need for dividend of democracy and human right you people in gvt and some ignorant once said his objective is to upturn the gvt fine, the young man restated his demand and made it clear that this is the so so and so thing we Nigerians want the gvt to do for her people on his media outlet Sahara and it was bold and clear I read it there was no harm in what he demanded, then he went on with the protest without any harms it was a peaceful protest and request for the common Nig but you nailed him on the cross by the name he chose to call the protest playing God and playing on the intelligence if Nigerians who can't speak for themselves, you said dss are carrying orders based on what is in the Constitution I want to ask if it is constitutional to intimidate and to mahandle someone who was not found guilty and granted bail inside and outside the court is it contitutional ? the truth of the matter is that Buhari is making us regret we voted him in and him and his cabals are playing God but they should remember nothing last forever a day would come

With All Due Respect to whoever that wrote this Press Statement.

I think both you and the Presidency should Resign if you don't have a public crisis management team to deal with issues like this.

The Presidency should be able to resolve all issues within it territory because you have all Nigerians in the executive judiciary and legislative arm of government and this crisis are home grown.

I think its simply because you at the Presidency don't feel the impulse of the people or the society you lead and live in up there.

sense u nor get, the only reason why sw voted out a non performing gvt was to install someone who would perform and it's not only SW alone go and check the statistics of votes that brought Buhari in it was general all because we want someone who would change things for good not knowing we voted a nincompoop and a Joker, the only policy he ever made that got me happy was to closing the border and encouraging us to buy Nigeria but unfortunately our president does not eat locally produced rice neither does he wear anything made in Nigeria today Gucci, tomorrow fendi next tomorrow Lewis Vuitton he just come aso Villa come chop life him own if anybody wan die make dem die. I smell the presidency gave the orders to rearrest him.
Revolution word has been used in many democracies and allowed.
His call was not for violence nor call to arms.
How can they compare this to Boko Haram.
Na so they claim Shiites carry guns
